Description As developing economies strive to increase livestock productivity both nationally and at individual producer level there is incentive for better characterisation of the current management techniques and appropriateness of potential interventions. This project successfully captured and utilised existing datasets presented as system baselines for both extensive and intensive smallholder livestock production in Tanzania within the CLEANED project conceptual framework for rapid assessment of system sustainability.
This characterisation of current production highlighted inherent differences both in husbandry, herd management, resources, production and environmental outputs. Baselines were then modelled in the creation and operating of various stakeholder favoured development scenarios including improved livestock genetics, nutritional provision and herd health
interventions. The process returned an iterative process of model framework improvement, with this and the modelled scenarios allowing evaluation of the output accurateness. This modelling of particular livestock based metrics was applied alongside holistic forage and milk analysis to offer an initial comparison of the current differences between the two systems and to better identify targets for interventions improving production sustainability. We have obtained: Reliable data about feed item quality is scarce in SSA
• Livestock productivity is low in Tanzania, good opportunities to improve exist. Due to current low productivity, environmental co-benefits, e.g. GHGe intensity reduction, are likely to occur with intensification
• Rapid and minimum-data ex-ante modelling exercises have the potential to inform decision making.
• At the regional level, net cumulative N2O emissions from degraded pastures are higher than those from non-degraded pastures.
• Pasture degradation, as reflected by low soil cover and pasture biomass, is an important factor regulating N2O emissions.
• Low tech methods for soil health assessment in tropical soils were developed at CIAT in Colombia
• Working with the NGO Send a Cow these methods were demonstrated to farmers using established peer farmer networks.
• Data from these tests performed by farmers were then collated by Claire Horrocks at RRes and farmers received feedback on the implications for their farm and were encouraged to continue these tests in the future
• This work was discussed at a workshop in Nairobi hosted by Send a Cow entitles
• 'Workshop on most effective land use options for smallholder dairy farmers - lessons from Western Kenya'
• The experience from the project will be written up for a journal as a short communication
• Additional work on soil health and tropical forage quality and micronutrient composition for different grass varieties collected in Colombia will also support future decision making and tropical forage selection for East Africa.

In the study by Chirinda et al. (2019) we quantified the magnitude of urine-based nitrous oxide (N2O) lost from soil under degraded (low vegetative cover) and non-degraded (adequate vegetative cover) pastures across the Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) and estimated their urine-N emission factors. Experiments at seven sites in five countries showed that rainy season cumulative N 2 O emissions (3.31 versus 1.91 kg N2O-N ha-1 ) and emission factors (0.42 versus 0.18 %) were higher for low vegetative cover compared to adequate vegetative cover pastures.

Description Improving the livelihoods of farmers in Tanzania though discussions and KT about on-farm interventions to improve animal nutrition, health and welfare. - The potential of the CLEANED assessment tool for representing intensification options relevant to the dairy production systems in Tanzania was confirmed. It did, however, become very clear that the results it produces in terms of environmental impacts should be complemented by profitability / cost-benefit estimates. The model has since been expanded with an economics module. - Resource mobilisation is on-going for the development of a robust database on feed item quality for the region. This is envisioned to be linked to a feed ration tool that can, in turn, inform the CLEANED scenario development.
