Description This was market research and has (a) showed us where to position our technology and (b) allowed us to file for patent protection.
Exploitation Route We are progressing towards spin out formation and have attracted BBSRC FOF then sFOF and EPSRC project grants as well as an RSE-BBSRC/STFC enterprise fellow to help pursue this development. We are now preparing a new patent for an enhanced bioreactor and progressing towards a first in man trial for cells produced by the bioreactor. Further, we have attracted Horizen 2020 funding to develop GMP manufacture of cells produced by the bioreactor for commercialisation purposes.
Sectors Healthcare,Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology

Description We presented this technology at the Royal Society Summer exhibition, Glasgow Science Centre Science Lates, IKEA outreach and at the Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. We filed a new patent based on this work which has now been awarded in Europe and the USA. The work was featured in a Channel 4 documentary series 'Live Well for Longer' and also in a BBC news feature on bone regeneration. We are progressing towards a first human trial of the technology.

Title Temporal transcriptional pattern in human bone merrow derived mesenchymal stem cell differentiation
Description Identification of transcription factors and bone marker genes expression pattern through MSCs osteogenic differentiation.
Type Of Material Model of mechanisms or symptoms - in vitro
Year Produced 2014
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact This transcriptional pattern has been adopted by other research projects on which MSCs osteogenic differentiation is stimulated by physical cues.

Title Nanovibrational stimulation inhibits osteoclastogenesis and enhances osteogenesis in co-cultures
Description Models of bone homeostasis could be useful in drug discovery, particularly if the model is one that replicates bone regeneration with reduction in osteoclast activity. Here we use nanovibrational stimulation to achieve this in a 3D co-culture of primary human osteoprogenitor and osteoclast progenitor cells. We show that 1000 Hz frequency, 40 nm amplitude vibration reduces osteoclast formation and activity in human mononuclear CD14+ve blood cells and enhances osteogenesis/reduces osteoclastogenesis in a co-culture of primary human bone marrow stromal cells and bone marrow hematopoietic cells. Further, we use metabolomics to identify Akt (protein kinase C) as a potential mediator. Akt is known to be involved in bone differentiation via transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGF?1) and bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP2) and it has been implicated in reduced osteoclast activity via Guanine nucleotide-binding protein subunit a13 (Ga13). With further validation, our nanovibrational bioreactor could be used to help provide humanised 3D models for drug screening.
Type Of Material Database/Collection of data
Year Produced 2021
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact New information on bone homeostasis and potential developmentof 3D bone models for drug screening

Title MECHANICAL BIOREACTOR
Description A mechanical bioreactor for transferring vibrations to cell cultures for the purpose of stimulating various biological processes across a relatively large (relative to the amplitude of the vibrations) sample receiving surface. This bioreactor allows multiple samples to receive identical stimulation, which may enable the process to be significantly scaled up. The invention may be particular applicable to nanoscale vibration amplitudes, where it is non- trivial to design a device that performs this function, because many materials exhibit natural deformation on a scale that would mask or inhibit transfer of nanoscale vibration energy.
