Low progoitrin food grade rapeseed

Abstract

The EU imports around 27 million tonnes of soybeans and soybean products for use in animal feeds. Domestic production of alternative protein sources would compete for land with food production. The meal remaining after extraction of oil from rapeseed is rich in protein and holds promise for use in animal feed, but the presence of the glucosinolate progoitrin limits the more extensive use of rapeseed meal in animal feed. We have identified a rapeseed line that lacks progoitrin. This proof-of-concept is needed to support the licencing of our genetic variant for commercial breeding of rapeseed for edible use. We aim to understand the genetic analysis of the low progoitrin trait, characterize the causative mutation for the low progoitrin trait, undertake market evaluation and initiate IP protection.

Description We have shown that gene variants in two different parts of the genome are involved in an overall very low glucosinolate component trait and a low proportion of progoitrin within the glucosinolate mix component trait. Molecular markers have been developed to support breeding. We have also shown that the combined trait (almost no progoitrin and a very low overall glucosinolate content) can be introduced into a low erucic acid oil background, making it suitable for food grade rapeseed. For IP protection, licensing of germplasm containing the novel genetic variation has been determined to be the most appropriate route.
Exploitation Route The trait can be used for breeding any type of rapeseed (food or industrial grades), improving the quality of the residual meal after oil extraction and meeting forthcoming new regulations on rapeseed glucosinolate content.
