A Thailand-UK workshop exploring algal-based therapeutics for aquaculture and farmed animals

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON
Department Name: Structural Molecular Biology

Abstract

Thailand

Description The workshop served to highlight the potential use of algal biotechnology in the safe and sustainable management infectious diseases within the aquaculture sector. Our engagement with researchers, funders, policy makers and the general public during the workshop has led to new bilateral R&D initiatives that will take this technology forward towards commercialisation.
Exploitation Route The research between the UK groups, Thai groups and other researchers across S.E. Asia that was the focus of this workshop is on-going and yielding exciting new findings. In particular, the use of engineered algae as safe and effective oral treatment to protect shrimp and other farmed shellfish against viral and bacterial diseases. As a direct result of the workshop, further grant funding is being sought through various Thai, European and UK funders.
