Development of genetic resources that underpin studies of seed quality in pea
Lead Research Organisation:
John Innes Centre
Department Name: UNLISTED
Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
Technical Summary
Populations of recombinant inbred and near-isogenic lines will be developed and maintained to underpin genetic and biochemical research on seed quality and agronomic traits. As novel germplasm becomes available through collaborations and/or the JIC Germplasm Resources Unit, this will be used to develop new populations. Seed composition mutants will be classified, catalogued and multiplied for use in externally funded projects.

| Description | We have developed new resources that will lead to enhanced seed and protein quality in legume crops. We are studying the effects of gene deletions and additional novel mutations on the control of seed quality traits in pea and are combining these mutations to generate novel seed protein profiles. Natural variation in exotic germplasm has been mined in order to make large changes to seed metabolism in support of fundamental studies as well as strategic uses. The materials are contributing to a study of amino acid composition and in vitro digestibility of seed protein in collaboration with CSIC, Spain. We have generated a much improved reference genome assembly for pea, which is already providing a big step change for pea genomics and genetics and is supporting new avenues for research in several projects. |
| Exploitation Route | Novel germplasm with characterised biochemical effects and associated genetic information will be exploited in breeding programmes aimed at improved food and feed uses of pulse crops. Depending on the functional properties of flour and protein from novel mutant combinations, some may provide advantages over current varieties in the development of new food products, particularly those aimed at providing high nutritional products to the gluten-free market. The huge increase in demand for meat-free protein has highlighted traits that are of particular interest to the food industry. Progress in pea genomics will underpin many new avenues of research, especially in the areas of nutritional quality and resistance to biotic stresses. |

| Description | The findings are being used in follow-on projects with transfer of some materials to industry. The resources have complemented those developed within the Pulse Crop Genetic Improvement Network, thus contributing to grant successes, notably for the proposal to Defra for PCGIN IIII (2018-2023) and the LINK project, PeaGen (2018-2022). New resources are being used to underpin the research programme of a new tenure-track Group Leader (the Ben Gill Translational Fellowship, funded by the John Innes Foundation). |
