Transgenic chicken facility

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Background: The development of the use of lentiviral vectors has reached a stage where the technology has the potential to be used by several groups within Roslin and in collaborations with a large number of external groups. The current technology is complicated and requires a wide range of skills, from construction and packaging of lentiviral vectors, through chick embryo microinjection and culture, to artificial insemination for breeding and pedigree hatching and screening of many chicks per week. The technology is still being developed, for example to increase efficiency, and the current resources are also used to support experiments that require chick embryo material and manipulation of embryos in ovo. Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to exploit the technology developed at Roslin and the unique facilities that enabled this development, to generate high quality research and establish Roslin as a centre for experimentation in the chick, in areas as diverse as development and disease, with links to our complementary expertise in chick genomics. Proposal The proposal is that a basic resource be supported from core funds to facilitate usage of the technology. Users will then be able to buy access to a package of support provided by the facility. The current proposal is that a core of staff be allocated to the transgenic chicken facility: Dr Adrian Sherman (to manage group and carry out transgenic production and screening), Mrs Rhona Mitchell and Ms Frances Thomson to support the transgenic production and carry out experimental work within the Poultry Unit. Additional technical input is required to run the process effectively.
