Horizon: Digital Economy Hub at the University of Nottingham
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Nottingham
Department Name: School of Computer Science
Abstract
Horizon will tackle the challenge of harnessing the power of ubiquitous computing for the digital economy in a way that is acceptable to our society and increases the quality of life for all. This will involve establishing a world-leading and sustainable centre of excellence for research and knowledge transfer for the ubiquitous digital economy. Horizon will conduct a five-year programme of research into the key scientific challenges involved in the widespread adoption of ubiquitous computing; collaborate with users to create, demonstrate and study next generation services; deliver a knowledge transfer programme that ensures that the results of our research are fully connected to the digital economy; train a new generation of researchers to meet the demands of industry for skilled interdisciplinary staff; engage with policy makers and the wider public in order to address societal concerns; and provide a focal point for international, national and regional research in this area.Horizon will exploit the distinctive nature of hub funding to develop a unique approach to this challenge. Our Collaborative Research Programme will be driven by the overarching concept of a lifelong contextual footprint, the idea that each of us throughout our lifetimes will lay down a digital trail that captures our patterns of interaction with digital services. Our research will explore the major infrastructural, human and business challenges associated with this concept, adopting a unique multidisciplinary approach that integrates insights from computer science, psychology, sociology, business, economics and the arts and humanities. We will collaborate with over 30 users from different sectors of the Digital Economy in order to create, deploy and study a series of next generation services 'in the wild' so as to drive our underlying research. We will initially focus on the creative industries and transportation sectors, but subsequently extend our focus to additional sectors in partnership with other hubs and major initiatives. In parallel, our Transformation Programme will drive knowledge transfer and long-term economic impact through partnership management, public engagement, international outreach, incubation of new ventures, the transfer of people, and training for 24 associated PhD students, funded by the University. Our team draws on leading groups at Nottingham spanning computer science, engineering, business, psychology and sociology, complemented by expertise at two spokes: distributed systems and communications at Cambridge, and mathematical modelling and advertising at Reading. A series of further mini-spokes will enable us to introduce other key individuals through hub fellowships. These multiple disciplines and partners will be brought together in a new centre at Nottingham where they will be able to engage with a critical-mass cohort of research staff and students to explore innovative and challenging new projects. The Hub will be directed by Professor Derek McAuley who brings extensive experience of working in academia, directing major industrial research laboratories, and also launching spin-out companies. He will be supported by Professor Tom Rodden, an EPSRC Senior Research Fellow who previously directed the Equator IRC. The net result will be a unique partnership between EPSRC, industry, the public, and the University, with the latter committing 16M of its own funds to match the 12M requested from EPSRC.

Title | A Conversation Between Trees |
Description | A Conversation Between Trees is a touring artwork that connects forests in the UK with the Mata Atlantica forest close to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The resulting interactive artwork reveals unseen aspects of these forest environments. A Conversation Between Trees is an international collaboration between the artist collective Active Ingredient, Horizon Research Institute (University of Nottingham), Senior Climate Scientist Carlo Buontempo and British Brazilian artist Silva Leal. The exhibition involves a live 'performance of data' as part of an installation and an interactive mobile phone experience that audiences can take out into a forest or park close to the exhibition. Sensors attached to mobile phones are placed in a tree in both forest locations. Live environmental and photographic data is collected from the trees, projected on two opposite screens in a gallery space as an abstract visualization. |

Title | Helen Oliver - wearable artcodes |
Description | Helen Oliver at the University of Cambridge Computer Laboratory approached us at artcodes to combine artcodes technology, wearables and The Silence of the Lambs. "I got the idea for this when I found out that all the Death's Head Moths in The Silence of the Lambs were actually normal moths, dressed in little costumes. Well if those moths get a costume, I get a costume. It's only fair. I also had been thinking about Artcodes and how they could be applied to wearables." The idea was to try and create an artcode that was not visible under normal light but if a flash was applied (such as when taking a picture) the artcode would appear and be read by your phone, triggering digital content. This proved tricky and in the short project we were able to get an artcode to scan under flash however the image is visible under normal light. More exploration into inks is needed to gain the desired outcome. |
Type Of Art | Artefact (including digital) |
Year Produced | 2016 |
Impact | This piece was taken to Hannibal Cosplay where it was worn throughout the day by Helen and also showcased at the costume competition. The interest in exploring new inks and materials bought up various questions around further impact and design challenges when using artcodes. |

Impact | A number of participants were invited to test the stories they had devised in workshops and fedback their ideas. We went on to a building a mirror into a vintage suitcase - designed to be used as a prop within a game or theatrical experience, which could intervene in different environments, encouraging people to get closer and more intimate with the mirror. The mirror in the suitcase was tested in a wood to explore how it would work outdoors. Further work involved building a mirror frame to be in a fixed location, reflecting the architecture and environment as part of an immersive experience, that also allowed more than a couple of participants to interact at any one time. |

Impact | Outcomes of "Roots" Exhibition. Artist statement: People have expressly stated how inspired they have been by the art and staff at IMH have stopped and thanked me stating that the light and life the artwork has brought into the building has been inspiring. Many people have stated that they have felt emotional connections to the artworks. Contributions to others and the community: Provided a talk with a group of MA students of Trauma and used the displayed artwork as a talking point for growth and resilience through trauma. Followed up with an individual student interview to assist with dissertation studies Held live discussion with BBC Radio Nottingham (Alan Clifford show) Developed links with the Nottingham Peace Project and planned provision of and gained council funding to lead "expression through art" workshops for young people in Basford (2018) Roots Exhibition Book - my story of Trauma, Resilience and Growth with accompanying paintings 1. Charitable financial benefits: Sales of paintings have raised £800 to provide a Remembrance Bench for Joel Cooke and £300 for Young Minds Trust. A total of £1,100 sales was made between the 10th October 2017 and 5th of January 2018. 2. New friendships and New opportunities: I have had a number of people ask me to show them how I paint different styles and I am starting small workshops at home on the 10th Jan 2018 I am contributing to Prof Stephen Regel's Stories and Narratives Project (2018) I am working with Su Ansell (De Montford University) on producing a short film about resilience, change and growth (2018) 3. Personal Growth, Empowerment, Health and Well-Being: The exhibition has encouraged me to get out and about, meet new people, socialise and converse. Exposure to the environment, particularly travelling on buses was my goal for my trauma treatment. I now have no fear of travelling on buses or passing through Nottingham. My confidence and communication skills are much improved. When I began planning g the exhibition with Elvira I had to take my daughter with me as I struggled with conversation skills. That is no longer the case. I am sure Elvira has noted the differences since we first met. My family and friends often comment on the progress I have made in overcoming my fear of public places and people. I intend to continue to raise funds for charity, raise awareness of how we can rebuild our resilience and growth through art expression. I will continue to inspire others by sharing my story and art. |

The MOMENT's themes mirror moves from current technology leaders such as Facebook, Google and Elon Musk to develop Brain computer interfaces for mass markets, these are the people that are going to have a dramatic influence on our futures. Science fiction often asks the audience what it means to be human, we may in our near futures be confronted with this very question. By incorporating the very technology that this film discusses, audiences are provoked to actively engaging in this conversation. |

Title | Fuzzy logic-based model for value-driven environmental management framework |
Description | A model based on fuzzy logic has been developed during this project. The data capture/analysis in environmental management is highly complex with large associated uncertainty in both qualitative and quantitative sources. This, compounded by the need for strong system transparency makes a fuzzy logic based model an ideal approach. A database structure is also developed that can hold the captured data and settings for each environmental management context. |

Organisation | Techmums Ltd |
Country | United Kingdom |
Sector | Private |
PI Contribution | Horizon researchers, CDT students and support staff have been working with Dr Sue Black OBE since July 2015 to promote her #techmums initiative in Nottingham. This social enterprise aims to improve women's digital skills and confidence so they can pass on the benefits to their families, return to work after career breaks and start their own businesses. It's run by Dr Sue Black, who was named one of the top 50 women in tech in Europe in 2015, and was awarded an OBE following her campaign Saving Bletchley Park. The research team have liaised with Sue and her team, contacted Nottingham schools and organised a series of face-to-face meetings between the the partners. We secured public engagement funding from the School of Computer Science to support a pilot #techmums course at local secondary school Top Valley Academy, and worked with partners to make all the necessary practical arrangements for it. |
Collaborator Contribution | Sue Black has contributed her time for teleconferences and a visit to Nottingham to help make the necessary local connections. Top Valley Academy contributed use of their space and technology, resources to recruit participants and catering. |
Impact | Five training sessions were delivered by Sue and another #techmums trainer, Julie McCarthy, at Top Valley Academy. The course covers: cloud computing, app design, social media & security, web design and python programming. Each session was attended by one or two Horizon staff/students (nine in total across the course), offering support and encouragement to the mums. Having completed the course, the mums visited the School of Computer Science at Jubilee Campus for a graduation ceremony, bringing some of their children with them. Here they got to try out a Virtual Reality experience. Nottingham South MP Lilian Greenwood presented them with certificates and Technical Skills Manager Kelly Vere was an inspirational speaker. The activities have been documented through professionally produced video, blogs, surveys and social media. The outreach was included in the School of Computer Science's resubmission for an Athena SWAN Bronze Award. |

PI Contribution | Development of a pre- and post-show customer foyer experience to be delivered alongside Tom Dale Company's "Digitopia" tour. Academic evaluation of the foyer experience. |
Collaborator Contribution | Tom Dale Company (TDC) provided creative input into the development process during project meetings, access to rehearsals of the Digitopia show and access to productions of the Digitopia show. TDC negotiated for our use of the tour venues as deployment and evaluation sites for the foyer experience. MOKO Dance evaluated the customer experience, providing us access to the results of the evaluation for analysis alongside our evaluation. |
Impact | The foyer experience was the first of its type that TDC has delivered alongside a stage show. Over a two-month period, the tour visited 16 UK venues and Digitopia was positively received by audiences and found critical acclaim in the press. MOKO Dance and our evaluations found that the foyer experience changed the customers' cultural experiences of the stage performance. Going forward, TDC and Horizon are looking at ways to continue collaborating to develop TDC's ways of working, esp. around the introduction of interactive technologies into performances and managing the longer customer experience (i.e. before and after performances). TDC expect such collaborations to provide new routes to economic impact, i.e. new business models. Our academic evaluation of the foyer experience is currently under review by ACM DIS conference. |

Description | Research collaboration and data exchange between this project and its partners in Western Australia |
Organisation | Government of Western Australia |
Country | Australia |
Sector | Public |
PI Contribution | The research team has developed key algorithms to enable the aggregation of qualitative stakeholder input (preferences, opinions) with quantitative assessments of the local state of conservation areas (e.g., species diversity, salinity, etc.). These algorithms have then been operationalised in an online, browser-based system (running in the cloud) which enabled the Australian partner to enter/modify locally relevant data for different catchments. This in turn was/is used to provide decision support for environmental management decision. |
Collaborator Contribution | This project is strongly supported by the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) of the Western Australian Government. The contribution by DPaW includes case studies, data exchange, expert time, scientific expertise and event (e.g., workshop) organisation. DPaW has been instrumental in informing the research and importantly, in conducting the evaluation. A series of papers are currently being prepared to publish the joint work. Also, DPaW is using the resulting system as part of upcoming management plans for several RAMSAR protected wetlands in Western Australia, showing the very significant impact of the research. |
Impact | Outcomes so far: 1- Expert Workshops, Australia, February 2013 2- Experts and Stakeholders Workshop, Australia, April 2014 3- Stakeholders Workshop, Australia, May 2014 4- Multidisciplinary Workshop, Nottingham, UK, November 2014 5- Several papers (2 accepted so far) 6- follow on research potential, which has led to EPSRC Impact Accelerator grant on exploring viability in the Thames Estuary The work is strongly multi-disciplinary, including Computer Science, Biology, Conservation and Management |

PI Contribution | Co-development of a new visitor experience for The Workhouse at Southwell as a contribution to the National Trust's "re-imagining The Workhouse" initiative (a scoping exercise prior to engaging commercial developers to redevelop The Workhouse as a visitor destination). I led the Horizon part of the development process, building on my previous experience of scoping, developing and evaluating novel visitor experiences; Horizon also provided two technologies - Wander Anywhere and Artcodes - as a basis for the new visitor experience. |
Collaborator Contribution | National Trust provided staff time (esp. significant time of their Re-imagining the Workhouse consultant) to take part in the co-development. They provided full use of The Workhouse site for two days a week for a month to run and evaluate the new visitor experience. They covered the costs of a large scale public launch evening (for 150 people). They covered the costs of promoting the visitor experience. National Trust also evaluated the visitor experience. |
Impact | Over 3000 visitors experienced Wander the Workhouse over the course of a month. The results of this collaboration informed the subsequent specification of National Trust's redevelopment of The Workhouse, and the commercial partners it has engaged to carry out that redevelopment. As such, at this stage it has impacted on the ways of working of the National Trust at The Workhouse; the redevelopment is likely to have a significant economic impact on The Workhouse when it is complete. |

Title | Mirage Project: Operating System |
Description | Mirage is a programming framework for constructing secure, high-performance network applications across a variety of cloud computing and mobile platforms. Code can be developed on a normal OS such as Linux or MacOS X, and then compiled into a fully-standalone, specialised unikernel that runs under the Xen hypervisor. Since Xen powers most public cloud computing infrastructure such as Amazon EC2, this lets your servers run more cheaply, securely and finer control than with a full software stack. |
Type Of Technology | Software |
Year Produced | 2012 |
Open Source License? | Yes |
Impact | Xen has thrown open the doors to experimental new operating systems such as ours, and it is fitting that we (as Xen developers too) improve the state of cloud management toolstacks. Many of the Mirage 1.0 libraries (such as the device driver implementations) are being used in XenServer as part of the disaggregation of the monolithic driver domain into multiple, less-privileged "stub domains". While the low-level plumbing for stub domains has existed for some years, they are difficult to build and debug in practise. Mirage's first major application is to transform the XAPI control stack into a standalone distributed system that can run an entire cluster of hosts with a greater degree of reliability, security and scalability than exists today. |

Title | e-Genie (Goal-setting and ENergy Information Engagement tool) |
Description | The e-Genie tool has two main sections: front screens which provide energy information feedback (both electricity and gas) and which scroll periodically, and further screens that users reach by 'Taking Action' to support discussing and changing behaviour and reporting energy related faults. Thermal imagining cameras and digital thermometers were also made available for building users alongside e-Genie in order to provide further tools for gaining more fine grained information about the building's energy use. |
Type Of Technology | Webtool/Application |
Year Produced | 2016 |
Impact | We have trialled e-Genie in two organisations to date, one is ongoing and the evaluation of this trial is not yet complete. From the first trial the overall impact of having e-Genie in the office was minimal. The first deployment served primarily as a test of the technology and at the site, the majority of the staff had little or no control over the environment or power aspects of the building. However for those individuals that were involved in the Ctech project in some way, it was reported that it made them more conscious of energy saving and the image that is projected by a company with regards to whether they are energy conscious or not. The organisation did report that they saw clear benefits from having e-Genie installed in our office in that it provided them with concrete energy data which they could refer to when making operational decisions. It was reported as giving credibility to points being made and allowed the illustration of, for example, exactly where the hottest bit of the building is. The thermal imaging cameras deployed alongside e-Genie were also interesting to the building users and were taken home by building users. It was reported that people enjoyed using these and there were energy efficiency measures installed (e.g. sealing strips, draught excluders, loft insulation and caps added to chimney stacks) as a direct result of their use. |

Description | A platform for crowd-sourcing of geo-located cultural information. The xMaps Platform builds on the ArtMaps Platform. It provides a platform for creating geo-tagged content and facilitating discussion around that content. In particular, it allows for new location information to be added to the content by users that in turn can be used to drive the discussion.
