Rural Digital Economy Research Hub
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Aberdeen
Department Name: Geography and Environment
Abstract
There is considerable untapped economic potential in rural areas of the UK. In England alone this is estimated to be worth at least 340 million per year. Burgess (2008) gives as principal reasons for this that high levels of rural business aspiration do not find their way into practice, and that existing entrepreneurship does not fully reach its potential in wealth creation. He urges that Government recognise that key ways of realising this potential are to initiate new forms of information networks for the transfer of knowledge, the sharing of good practice, and engagement with wider markets, policy-making processes, and for the creation of larger 'masses' of expertise. By the creation of a Rural Digital Economy Hub at the University of Aberdeen we propose to take up this key challenge for policy and to employ digital technology to realise this untapped rural economic potential, through themes and projects targeted at key economic activities in the rural UK. Rural areas have specific characteristics that create particular problems for these types of activities: for example, small and often dispersed populations; narrow and uneven channels of information flow, including often relatively restricted access to digitally-based information; and rapid change in population structures and economic activity bases.Digital technology will play a major role in releasing untapped potential in the economies of rural areas in the UK. By using innovative flexible ways of 'digital working', rural businesses and communities can build on their social, economic and environmental capital to generate new wealth, employment and social opportunities. Working with communities, businesses and policy-makers on initiatives in tourism, healthcare, accessibility, conservation of natural resources, and enterprise and culture as our partners, the University of Aberdeen's Rural Digital Economy Research Hub will use our extensive expertise in information technology applications, rural economy and society, to initiate innovative projects in rural communities and businesses across the UK.We will, from the outset, incorporate and act on feedback from our partners to design and refine digital solutions to business needs. We will, with partners, evaluate our work to maximise benefits for rural economies and for the policy sectors affecting the well-being of the UK's rural areas.Rural areas of the UK can, through the user-led application of digital technology in carefully designed ways, be more economically, socially and environmentally sustainable: we will harness our expertise with rural partners to realise this ambition. Title | SIRA STREAMS: Axe Reproduction @ SSW |
Description | From 11-23th August 2014, the collaboration of Scottish Sculpture Workshop artist Eden Jolly and master blacksmith Darrell Markewitz, with Dr. Gordon Noble, archeologist at University of Aberdeen, sought to recreate a ceremonial axe - as seen on the Rhynie Man standing stone - through smelting and forging locally sourced materials. The Rhynie Man stone is dated to roughly 700 AD, and shows a man carrying what looks to be a ceremonial axe, the type of which was used to sacrifice cattle - part of an early Pictish King's role as a religious as well as a secular leader. During the excavations carried out in 2013, a pendent depicting the axe was found, along with metal-working tongs. This find led to an initial bloomery smelt held in Rhynie last summer, and further dialogue between Scottish Scupture Workshop and the Rhynie investigations. On the 14th of August 2014 the SIRA STREAMS Team visited the Scottish Scupture Workshop to capture video as Darrell Markewitz worked to reproduce this iron age axe. Darrell worked the forge to reproduce a replica of the Rhynie Man axe depicted on the stone. The axe itself remains a subject of much debate in the archaeological community. |

We held an open lecture showing an iron age smelt conducted by Darrell Markewitz and the team at the SSW in August 2014. We presented video of the entire smelt process from heating the forge to final extraction. Darrell joined remotely from Canada, and answered questions together with local speakers from the Scottish Sculpture Workshop. |

Description | Research teams within the Digital Economy Hub have developed a range of technologies to benefit rural communities across the UK and beyond. Examples include making improvements to how communities record and share their history, improvements in how people monitor their health, new ways of communicating environmental issues to the public and improvements in the way public transport users receive information in a timely manner. |
Exploitation Route | Prototype technologies have potential for exploitation; policy makers can utilise key findings around a broad range of digital themes/agendas affecting rural communities. |

Title | Data Bundle for Models of argument for deliberative Dialogue in Complex Domains |
Description | This data bundle contains all the data that were used in Toniolo's PhD Thesis, with title "Models of argument for deliberative Dialogue in Complex Domains". In this research, we defined and empirically evaluated a model of deliberation dialogue based upon argumentation schemes for agents with different objectives to decide what to do in collaboration. The three main folders correspond to the data used for analysis in Chapter 5 (Identifying effective plans through dialogue), Chapter 6a (Strategies driven by plan feasibility) and Chapter 6b (Strategies driven by conflict importance) respectively. Each folder contains files with data resulting from the experiments in csv format, and a file graphAnalysisChX.rtf that contains R scripts for generating the graphs for analysis as presented in the thesis. |

Title | Dataset for "How can skin check reminders be personalized to patient conscientiousness" |
Description | Anonymised data from this PATH 2015 workshop paper. This paper explores the potential of personalising health reminders to melanoma patients based on their personality (high vs low conscientiousness). We describe a study where we presented participants with a scenario with a fictional patient who has not performed a skin check for recurrent melanoma. The patient was described as either very conscientious, or very unconscientious. We asked participants to rate reminders inspired by Cialdini's 6 principles of persuasion for their suitability for the patient. Participants then chose their favourite reminder and an alternative reminder to send if that one failed. We found that conscientiousness had an effect on both the ratings of reminder types and the most preferred reminders selected by participants. |

Title | Map-Matching Algorithm for Rural Passenger Information Systems through Mobile Phones and Crowd Sourcing |
Description | Map-matching (MM) algorithms integrate location data (i.e., latitude and longitude) obtained from positioning sensors (in this case, mobile GPS) with a digital geographic information system (GIS) road map. Any map-matching algorithm first identifies the road link on which a vehicle is traveling and then determines the vehicle's location on that road segment. In this new map matching algorithm, at a given point of time, a number of vehicle locations (latitude and longitude) are received from passengers traveling on a bus. In order to provide a precise vehicle location at a given point of time, a novel map-matching algorithm using fuzzy logic, which integrates multiple vehicle locations (obtained from passenger's smart phones) with a GIS road map, has been developed. The developed map-matching algorithm was tested using real-world data collected on four different bus routes in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, and also GPS data collected in and around Nottingham, United Kingdom. It was identified that the developed MM algorithm is efficient and capable of supporting the proposed passenger information system. |

Title | River Level Data Provided by SEPA (Scottish Environment Protection Agency) |
Description | This dataset was provided by SEPA for our dot.rural partnership project IADES. The data include river level measurements collected from several SEPA gauging stations on River Dee (Aberdeenshire). The river levels were measured every 15 minutes during the period of 2010 to 2013.
