A new simulation and optimisation platform for marine technology

Lead Research Organisation: University of Oxford
Department Name: Mathematical Institute

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description (1) Adjoints are an effective tool for the design and optimisation of tidal turbine arrays. (2) By automating the adjoint process, this technology can be used by non-expert engineers in industry to solve pressing problems of importance to their commercial objectives. (3) The fidelity of the underlying physical model is key for quantitative vs qualitative design, and therefore adjoint technology should be used on more accurate & sophisticated models of the underlying physical processes in future work.
Exploitation Route The work is already being taken forward in the form of a Platform Grant via which we will continue to work with Atlantis Resources. More generally, the discoveries funded by this grant can be put to use across all of high-tech industry, wherever simulation of complex physical processes is key to predicting the performance of engineering designs.
Sectors Aerospace, Defence and Marine,Chemicals,Electronics,Energy,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology,Transport

Description The software has been used in industry by MeyGen & Atlantis Resources Ltd to inform the design of their tidal turbine arrays. We are still actively collaborating with Atlantis (who have bought MeyGen) and have recently won another grant (an EPSRC Platform Grant worth approx. £2M) which among other things will continue this work.
