Abstract

The Centre for the Analysis of Motion, Entertainment Research and Applications (CAMERA) will build on and extend existing impactful relationships between leading researchers at the University of Bath supported by investment from the University, from external partners and with the close participation of Bath's EPSRC Doctoral Training Centre for Digital Entertainment (CDE).

Building on existing expertise in Applied Visual Technology and closely linked with the CDE, CAMERA will draw on knowledge, skills and outputs across multi-disciplinary research areas. These include Computer Vision, Graphics, Motion-Capture, Human-Computer Interaction, Biomechanics and Healthcare, underpinned by a strong portfolio of DE research funding from RCUK and other funders. CAMERA will deliver Applied Visual Technology into our partners companies and their industries, to achieve high economic, societal and cultural impact.

Bath leads the UK in innovative creative industry research and training for post-graduates through our CDE, which is contractually partnered with 35 innovative UK companies. Growing from our established core strength in the area of Visual Technology - capturing, modelling and visualising the real world - and our strong historical foundation of entertainment-delivered research, CAMERA will focus on high-impact work in movies, TV visual vffects (VFX) and video games with partners at the The Imaginarium and The Foundry, two of the world's leading visual entertainment companies. This focused collaboration will push the boundaries of technology in the area of human motion capture, understanding and animation, and artist driven visual effects production, feeding into our existing CDE partnerships.

From this strong foundation, we will extend and apply visual technology to new areas of high economic, societal and cultural impact within the digital economy theme. These include Human Performance Enhancement, with partners in British Skeleton and BMT Defence Services; and Health, Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies, with partners in the Ministry of Defence.

CAMERA is well placed to lead the application of Visual Technology in these new directions: Bath researchers have helped athletes to win 15 Olympic and World Championship medals in the last 10 years and have contributed significantly to national efforts in integrating ex-soldiers with disabilities into civilian life.

Planned Impact

CAMERA, as a Next Stage Digital Economy Centre, has been set-up to stimulate an ethos of exploring pathways to impact as an intrinsic part of training and research. Our key aims are to:
a) interweave industry and academic work to generate economic, societal and cultural impact and further research outcomes
b) further develop our already substantial training mechanisms to provide an array of highly skilled professionals.

The impact of the Centres' research outcomes will be accelerated by the close working relationships of impact partners. In particular the work within the Movies, TV and Video Games theme will directly benefit the UK Digital Entertainment economy. The UK television export market is £3 billion p.a. (UK TV Production Market Insight (2013) and a report by Oxford Economics in 2012 valued the UK Film industry at £4.6 billion p.a. and supported over 117,000 jobs (up from 100,000 in 2009). The tools developed by this Centre will be immediately relevant for vision-industry applications and will either give our partners a competitive edge (e.g. additional facial capture tools for The Imaginarium) or a lead to potentially marketable products similar to The Foundry's NUKE.
The work proposed by CAMERA is unique worldwide as the technology is only just reaching an applicable state of development. The timeliness of this programme and the scale of the industries it could potentially disrupt highlights the important national impact that could be achieved.

The Centre targets impact through the three core research themes.

The Video Games and Film theme will impact artists and creators by enabling them to create digital content for film and games more easily, for example by automating manual tasks such as rotoscoping.
The cutting-edge augmented environment training technology developed with our partners British Skeleton and leading defence service provider BMT will capture motion and use visualisation in a way that will benefit not only their own industries but other sectors such as the Emergency Services or TV broadcast analysis. Prior analysis on sporting success has highlighted the national level impact success can generate, through both positive associations and copy-cat affects. Improving the way computer generated training is implemented will result in safer and more effective training in the large commercial and military marine sectors.
Through the Health, Rehabilitation and Assistive Technologies theme our vision and motion capture work co-created with the charity Help the Heroes and the MoD will have a step-change in how the rehabilitation of ex-soldiers returning from conflict with trauma will be set-up and assessed. Improved orthopaedic tools will be developed improving amputee outcomes and improving the quality of life for people with ocular impairments and a real opportunity to create a substantial saving to the NHS and MOD (and healthcare beyond the UK).

Training provision adds an additional level of impact. By associating CAMERA with the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital Entertainment we will be able to further develop opportunities for researchers and students to enhance their skills in the three themes. By exposing students to real-world problems and being involved in the co-creation of the solutions with our partners we hope to train a workforce that will support the UK creative industries. Our training provision represents a complete route from research to the real world: from EngD/PhD students, to post-doctoral RA's working directly on transitioning existing research portfolios to industrial impact, to new academics who will become world leaders in this area with industrial links second to none in both the UK and world-wide. To reinforce this we have allied ourselves with the University of Bath Innovation Centre (founding partner of the SETsquared incubator ranked 2nd globally) who will provide entrepreneurship training which is particularly relevant in such fast paced field
 
Title Cosmos Within Us 
Description CAMERA was proud to contribute digital characters, using our proprietary animation technology, to Satore Studios' Raindance award-winning VR production Cosmos Within Us directed by Tupac Martir. Martir's team, who's production won the Best Immersive Experience of the Festival, visited the CAMERA studio where actors wore a Vicon Cara headset with 4 video cameras. These were used to track markers strategically placed on their faces. The team at CAMERA used an in-house facial motion capture solver algorithm to match and blend a library of face shapes to fit the changing marker positions. Rubin Shah at Satore noted that "we worked with CAMERA as we knew they could deliver the motion capture that was required for the production to be delivered in the vision we required."

Title George Eksts, Dance Project 
Description Artist George Eksts approached CAMERA in 2016 to set up a one day motion capture shoot of a dancer for an installation he was creating looking at perceptions of time. The shoot used CAMERA's optical body motion capture system and involved capturing a series of eleven choreographed routines. The motion capture files were delivered to the client as fbx files via a secure file transfer protocol.

Title Renaissance (Ben Dunks) 
Description The CAMERA team worked with Ben Dunks, dance and movement artist, on his immersive falls prevention project Renaissance (funded by the South West Creative Technology Network) Motion capture took place at CAMERA's state of the art studio, to fully capture participants in their seventies performing Ben's movement programme. Renaissance is an immersive falls prevention programme, designed for vulnerable older people living in Sheltered Accommodation and paid for by Housing Associations. At its heart is a movement programme that will be delivered by Housing Association Carers through an interactive platform. It is a programme that will fundamentally change the heath of all who experience it alongside decreasing their chances of falling. Our Prototyping Project is an ambitious set of three different programmes that will ultimately support the success of Renaissance. 1) In partnership with CAMERA at Bath University we will Motion Capture 6 participants from Bath Sheltered Housing as they go through our movement programme across 6 weeks, one session/week. This will demonstrate change in participant movement, validating the programme as suitable for falls prevention. 2) Plymouth Community Homes, our partner in the development of Renaissance, work with sensors embedded into resident armchairs, measuring activity levels. We will work with 3 cohorts of participants in Plymouth, using accelerometers to measure movement in sessions and linking this to residential data to help evaluate session impact. 3) We will work with PCH Carers, participants and senior managers to design, test and iterate their experiences across the programme ensuring the prototype meets needs. About the Team The team behind Renaissance is Ben Dunks, dance/movement artist, trainer and SWCTN Fellow, Emma McFarland, Digital and Innovation Producer and Christopher Hunt, Creative Technologist and Digital Artist. They have worked together for 2 years through Attik Dance and bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and excitement to the project.

Description Stickee Ltd are a creative technology, software and digital design company based in London. They approached CAMERA to provide motion captured movements for multiple characters in a VR game title they are developing. Description Modern machine learning approaches are useful for solving a range of problems in entertainment related to animation and artist workflow optimisation.

CAMERA is a research centre which takes research in visual technologies and applies it to new areas. For example, we do research in Visual Effects and animation for film and video games, and look to apply this to sport analysis, rehabilitation and training.

We have discovered and developed a number of key findings since our inception in late 2015. One useful discovery is the application of modern machine learning algorithms to perform realistic animation and also increase artist productivity. The creative industries form a major part of our modern economy, and our methods can have an impact increasing efficiency and maintaining the UKs leading position in this area.

We have also been applying some of the same animation methods in an inverse way, i.e. to human motion analysis, so that we are able to point a camera at a person and get accurate biomechanical data about them. This is useful in rehabilitation - e.g. in hospitals where cameras can replace expensive imaging equipment - as well as elite sport. We are continuing to refine these methods and are about to trail our sports analysis system with the British Skeleton Olympic team. We used the same system for rehabilitation of ex-service personnel with the Ministry of Defence.

Over the last 3 years, our team of 14 academics and over 40 PhDs and researchers have created real impact with partners.

This includes commercial projects such as Raindance Festival nominated 'Is Anna OK?' with the BBC, and BAFTA nominated '11:11 Memories Retold' with Aardman and Bandai Namco (XBox, Steam and PS4).

By translating visual technologies across themes, impacts included developing personalised prosthetic limb liners, powered ankle prostheses and myoelectric arm prostheses with the NHS, Blatchford Healthcare and Open Bionics. We have also developed markerless biomechanical measurement technology with British Skeleton and the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

CAMERA has published over 100 academic papers across these themes, and our multi-disciplinary approach has enabled us to unlock new translational research opportunities with support from EPSRC, H2020, AHRC, MRC, Versus Arthritis, MoD and InnovateUK. This includes being core partners in the ~£5m Bristol + Bath AHRC Creative Cluster, attracting £1.5m to lead a new South West Digital Innovation Business Acceleration Hub and unlocking £1.8m in European Commission funding to increase our studio infrastructure from 2020.

Description This is the dataset for the doctoral thesis "A Novel Neural Network Architecture with Applications to 3D Animation and Interaction in Virtual Reality" by Javier de la Dehesa Cueto-Felgueroso. See the original document for details. The dataset is structured in three parts. The files `gfnn_code.zip` and `gfnn_data.zip` contain the code and data for the experiments with grid-functioned neural networks discussed in chapter 3 of the thesis. The files `quadruped_code.zip` and `quadruped_data.zip` contain the code and data for the quadruped locomotion experiments and user study discussed in chapter 4. The files `framework_code.zip` and `framework_data.zip` contain the code and data for the human-character interaction framework experiments and user studies discussed in chapter 5. Each pair of files should be decompressed in the same directory, but separate from the other parts. Further details and instructions for each of the parts can be found within the corresponding compressed files.

Title RGBD Dog Dataset 
Description RGBD-Dog contains motion capture and multiview (Sony) RGB and (Kinect) RGBD data for several dogs performing different actions (all cameras and mo-cap syncronised with calibration data included. You can get the data, code to view and the CVPR 2020 paper it is all based on from our GitHub page. In our CVPR 2020 paper we use the data to train a model to predict dog pose from RGBD data. However, it also works pretty well on other animals. In the future we will expand the data and code as we publish more of our research.

PI Contribution CAMERA were commissioned by Aardman to provide motion capture for 11-11: Memories Retold (https://www.bandainamcoent.com/games/11-11-memories-retold) Aardman have collaborated with BANDAI NAMCO Entertainment Europe and DigixArt to create 11-11: MEMORIES RETOLD, a story-driven narrative adventure set during World War I with a unique painted style that plans to deliver an entertainment experience. Nominated for British Game and Game Beyond Entertainment in 2019s BAFTA Games Awards (http://www.bafta.org/games/awards/bafta-games-awards-nominations-winners-2019) The game has scooped the Best Educational/Serious Game Award at the TIGA awards. The Aardman team spent nearly two weeks in the CAMERA Studio over the course of nine individual shoots to get the motion capture data to animate most of the major characters in 11:11. The capture sessions were delivered using CAMERA's Vicon system, and involved two performers, Chris Brown and Alison Garner, along with a selection of props including a rifle and even a stuffed cat. For each shoot the CAMERA team would attach 50 passive optical markers to the performer's motion capture suit. The cameras then track the position of those markers in space to create a skeleton that is used to animate a digital avatar. ---- Is Anna ok? Description: CAMERA, the University of Bath's motion capture research centre, have collaborated with animation studios Aardman on a BBC virtual reality documentary about the story of twin sisters whose lives were torn apart by a terrible accident. The VR documentary, called "Is Anna OK?" allows the viewer to step into the shoes of Anna and her sister Lauren to discover how their lives are changed after Anna suffers a head injury from being hit by a car. Viewers can experience the documentary from multiple points of view, exploring Anna's fragmented memories and piecing together the story of what happened and follow Anna's journey of rehabilitation. Researchers at CAMERA worked closely with the animators at Aardman using motion capture technology to make the movement of the characters more realistic. In particular, they used the latest research methods in facial animation to analyse the 3D movement of the actor's face and transfer it onto the face of the animated character. Professor Darren Cosker, Director of CAMERA, led the research. He explained: "One actor played the parts of both identical twins for the documentary. "We performed a 3D scan of the actor's face and built an animated model from this. We then used a mixture of different research methods to analyse the fine movements of the actor's face, such as her smile and eyebrow movements. "Each movement of the actor's face was assigned values which were then transferred to the model of the character's face. This method is much easier for the animators to edit and tweak movements rather than building a new animated face from scratch. "This work is a result of several years of research, so it's great to be able to put our research into use on a commercial project for the first time." The team recently worked with Aardman on the role-playing game 11-11 Memories Retold, which used motion capture technology to animate the characters. The documentary was nominated for several awards last year, including the 2018 Raindance Film Festival and the 2018 Sheffield Doc Fest. The VR piece is available to download for free on Oculus Rift, and you can see the full length animation version here on YouTube. Real-time pre-visualisation, or pre-vis, is a method of showing live how the motion data that the performer is generating looks on the character avatar. It uses a pipeline taking the motion data into the game engine Unity where it is applied to the character in real time to give a 'rough' version of what of the final outputs will look like. Pre-vis was used during shoots to help the Aardman team direct the performer and make decisions about how the shots should be done. We also had input during the shoots from the lead animator based out in Singapore, who was able to watch the performance in the studio via video link. In total CAMERA delivered around 8000 character seconds of body motion capture data for the project. The project gave opportunities to local performing arts talent, with Bristol Old Vic Theatre School student, Jyuddah Muzahura, volunteering to perform in the initial test shoots. 'Is Anna ok' used the facial motion capture solver that came from Shridhar Ravikumar's PhD Project with Darren, plus further development through an IAA project plus a lot of work from CAMERA staff (Jose in particular). That will hopefully place it well for a future impact case study. The same solver is now going to be used on the upcoming Satore commercial project in March.

Professor Eamonn O'Neill, CAMERA Co-Director, will lead a Beacon to assist and augment the human in multiple ways and settings including: assistive technology for overcoming disabilities; enhancing performance for all in daily tasks; enhancing performance in extreme conditions from elite sport to emergency services. This work entails augmenting both body and mind, providing assistance physically (e.g. smart prosthetics, brain-driven exoskeletons) and mentally (e.g. dementia care, cognitive and perceptual assistive technologies). It will also aid early prediction and diagnosis of conditions from blood cancer to Alzheimer's disease, contributing to prevention and care. They will develop, evaluate and exploit a range of technologies including hardware and software.

PI Contribution CAMERA is creating a library of movement data from different dog breeds, to make animal animations in films and video games more realistic. PhD Researcher Sinead Kearney said: "In order to learn how animals move, we first need data of these animals. The majority of motion capture research focuses on humans, so very few datasets of animal motion are available. We decided to tackle this problem by recording some animals ourselves. We started with dogs, since it's straightforward to get them into the studio, there is a wide range of body shapes across different breeds, and dogs can be directed to perform various tasks. By recording the dogs performing each of the selected tasks, not only do we learn how dogs move in general, but how their movements differ from breed to breed." Simon Lynn, Head of Animal Operations at Bath Cats and Dogs Home, said: "This is such an innovative project for our dogs and team to be a part of. It will be so beneficial for the dogs taking part as it is great socialisation for them - meeting new people and seeing different sights and sounds. Kennel life can become repetitive so we're always looking at ways to add enrichment to our dog's lives whilst they're waiting to be adopted and a trip to the CAMERA team at the University of Bath definitely fits the bill."
Collaborator Contribution This project has really captured the public's imagination, and was featured in 44 news items including BBC News, with coverage in the UK, USA, Canada, India and Australia! CAMERA is delighted to hear that two of the dogs used for this motion capture work have now found a loving new home. PI Contribution CAMERA 2.0 Project Partner Description of impact: Across the last three Olympic cycles, the British Skeleton team have won 3 Olympic Gold and 2 Olympic Bronze medals becoming the most decorated nation in this sport. Across these preparatory cycles, the team have worked with the University of Bath on various research projects focussed on enhancing the preparation of their athletes for the very top level of competition. Dr Steffi Colyer has been involved in all projects to date and is working closely with the organisation to develop future research priorities. The latest project has been conducted within CAMERA and has been a close collaboration between the investigators listed above and the BBSA. As part of this project, we have developed novel motion analysis technologies that allow biomechanical metrics and British athletes' performances to be assessed in a totally non-intrusive way. Knowledge impact through the development of a customised marker-less performance assessment technology. The data that this system provides can have a profound effect on the development of their coaching practices. The BBSA will have previously unobtainable performance data, with which to tailor their training programmes. People based impact is also achieved through the training and performance benefits for athletes, as well as the stronger data relationship on the efficacy on training approaches for coach/coaching development. The ease with which the proposed system can provide objective information will also have economic benefits for the BBSA, as this data will allow decisions around the training and coaching process to be made with greater certainty and fewer resources than previously required. Similarly, maintaining or improving on previous Olympic successes will ensure the organisation maintains its funding in a competitive environment. Olympic success is well known for having a positive societal benefit for the country being represented. Ripple effects from public engagement with sporting success stories have been quantified multiple times, with measurable improvements in regional and national productivity and well-being linked to this. How did your research contribute? Creation of a markerless motion capture system that can provide previously unobtainable information about performance in a normal training environment. This fully passive assessment capability has never previously been achieved and is at the forefront of this field. Knowledge exchange to inform and improve training and coaching practices in preparation for major competitions (Winter Olympic Games for example). What steps have been undertaken to achieve impact? Dr Colyer has forged very positive relationships with the BBSA (Danny Holdcroft, Head of Performance and Research Innovation and Ed McDermott, Head Start Coach) and has collaborated with them on various projects for almost a decade. This close relationship has allowed knowledge exchange and its associated impact to be realised more readily. Dr Colyer's research to date has directly informed training, coaching and testing practices of the British Team. The newly developed system will accelerate this impact by providing the BBSA with a tool that can be embedded in their current programme and practice.

PI Contribution Photogrammetry shoot and optical motion capture Mesmerix are Bath based specialists in virtual and augmented reality experiences. CAMERA were first commissioned to build a virtual 3D model of the famous statue of Jane Austen standing outside the Jane Austen museum in Bath (https://www.jane-austens-house-museum.org.uk/) using portable 3D scanners. The scan was then turned into a digital model and rigged by CAMERA Head of Studio, Martin Parsons. We then captured optical motion capture data from a performer in the CAMERA Studio and used it to animate the model. The resulting content was used in an augmented reality piece engaging visitors to Bath in its cultural history through the work of one of Britain's finest writers. PI Contribution CAMERA worked with Marshmallow Laser Feast on facial capture as part of the Chameleon project. Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF) were commissioned by the British Council to create a virtual reality experience based on local community members in Mexico City. MLF contacted CAMERA regarding the processing of Artec data scans generated in Mexico into facial models which could be animated inside a virtual environment, and experienced via a Vive headset. The project was a great success and will be recreated at the University of Bath as part of our 50th anniversary celebrations.
Collaborator Contribution In October of 2016 the British Council invited Marshmallow Laser Feast to collaborate with 13 emerging Mexican artists in a two week residency with Mutek.MX, Mexico City's international festival for digital creativity. Together they learned and applied new skills in digital creativity to captured the city, its people and their stories in 360º. From this process they created Chameleon, a sensory portrait of Mexico City presented by Mutek.MX at their 2016 festival. Chameleon is a mixed reality exploration of the people of Mexico City. VR portraiture that examines the way inhabitants of one of the most populous cities in the world adapt & adjust to their environment using different coping mechanisms. Within a virtual gallery audiences see four individuals who use art, history, knowledge, nature, work and play to weave their identities. Chameleon presents these identities as a multidimensional reality that spectators access through virtual reality, spatialized audio, 3D printing & video.

PI Contribution A major public art sculpture trail featuring 100 individually decorated owl sculptures displayed across the World Heritage city of Bath and surrounding region from June - September 2018. An Artec Eva portable scanner was used to enable successful scanning of the original artist clay model of the owl. The scanner uses a structured light source to enable rapid scanning of geometry. The resulting point cloud representation of the owl model was then post processed to remove erroneous data points and enable creation of a full triangulated stereolithography model'. This digital model was then used to manufacture the owls for the sculpture trail.
Collaborator Contribution Partners led on coordinating all other aspects of owl manufacture.

Collaborator Contribution Old Vic Theatre School students have been given the opportunity to take park in workshops in the CAMERA studio, in which their performances have been recorded by motion capture. This will add to the students' CV and experience whilst providing data which can be used by the research team. They are inputting into analysis of user-need for real-time virtual studio research.

Description Rewind and Welsh National Opera Virtual Reality experience

PI Contribution CAMERA provided motion capture services to Rewind for their collaboration with the Welsh National Opera. Soprano Karah Son performed the aria 'Un Bel Di' from Madame Butterfly whilst CAMERA motion capture her body and face performance. CAMERA Head of Studio also improvised a simple cloth simulation by attaching netting to Karah's sleeves with optical markers attached. When translated into the game engine, this allowed the sleeves of the digital character's kimono to move freely as cloth would.
Collaborator Contribution Rewind produced a stylised CG environment and character avatar as part of the virtual reality experience. They took the motion capture data from CAMERA and used it to animate the character synchronised to the audio track of Karah singing. The resulting VR experience was deployed within a purposed designed shipping crate and located outside the theatres in which the Welsh National Opera were touring, for audience members to experience outside of the traditional theatre environment. The objective was to show that opera can be more accessible and to difference audiences that one may think, and to demonstrate the applicability of digital technologies to performing arts. REWIND won two VR Awards (https://www.the-vr-expo.com/vr-awards) for the Magic Butterfly immersive VR experience for Welsh National Opera. REWIND won both the Immersive Heritage; Leisure Award and The Immersive Art Award. CAMERA was proud to collaborate on technical elements of this project.
Impact The final exhibit has been nominated for, and won, multiple awards globally. It will constitute part of CAMERA's impact case study REF return. It has generated nearly £4000 of revenues for CAMERA which will spent on extending researcher posts and new equipment.

Description Satore Studio motion capture shoot

PI Contribution CAMERA were commissioned by Satore to provide motion capture expertise and services as part of a project to produce an immersive experience promoting Johnnie Walker in Mexico. The CAMERA Studio team collaborated with the Satore team on a shoot session in London, capturing motion data for professional ballet dancer Isaac Hernandez using the Xsens motion capture system. The CAMERA team post produced the resulting data and applied it to the Satore mesh to generate an animated character.
Collaborator Contribution The Satore team created a virtual environment in which the animated character was placed to create a digital labyrinth. The resulting production was projected onto the side of the Torre Reforma building in the middle of Mexico City with an estimated 1 million viewers over the project's duration.
Impact The collaboration generated £2,263 in revenues for the University, which will be used to sustain researcher roles and invest in new equipment within CAMERA. The resulting piece was widely viewed and has obtained significant press coverage, promoting the work of Satore, but also of the research of CAMERA.

1- What level of analysis is needed to detect expertise during basketball shooting in virtual reality?
To benefit from virtual reality (VR) as a complementary tool for training, coaches must determine proper tools and variables for tracking sport performance. We explored basketball shooting at several scales (ball-basket, player-ball, and player systems) by monitoring success rate and ball and body kinematics. We also measured how perceptual sensitivity to visual sources of information, can be influenced by basket distance, level of expertise, and gender.

2- Tracking expertise in visual information pickup when throwing basketball using virtual reality.
The basketball court offers multiple sources of visual information for players to perceive the basket's distance. The perceptual superiority of experienced players in picking-up those information sources for regulating their throw should be established. Virtual reality provides a valuable tool for players and coaches to examine visual information pickup without impoverishing the visual scene and without mounting bulky eye tracking systems on the players.

The exhibition was aimed at anyone with a fondness for self-improvement; anyone interested in getting more from the world in the spirit of giving back.
30 people attended the live event with many more watching the recording and podcast afterwards. It sparked questions and lively debate regarding future housing and working issues.

Results and Impact As part of the University of Bath's 50th Anniversary Celebrations the The Assisted Living Action Network (ALAN) held their annual event on Wednesday 14 September 2016 at The Edge Arts Centre. This was co-hosted by the CAMERA Centre as a special Computer Vision session.

Martin Parsons faced some unusual challenges in capturing Soprano Karah Son's performance. REWIND have won multiple awards for the captivating immersive VR experience Magic Butterfly, which toured with the WNO in 2017/2018, and welcomed over 10,000 visitors.

Results and Impact Bath Taps into Science is a science festival which focuses on exciting and enthusing young children and families with science and engineering. The festival has won numerous awards including the British Science Association Award for the best event during Science Week and most recently Professor Chris Budd, one of the founding team, was awarded an OBE for his work organising Bath Taps into Science amongst other public engagement activities. Bath Taps into Science is part of the UK Science Festival Network.

Bath Taps into Science Fair, is a wonderful opportunity to meet researchers and members of the local science and engineering community. Started in 2000 it now forms a firm part of the Bath science scene and, whilst organized and largely funded by the University of Bath, it is a partnership with many other organisations in Bath and beyond, including many schools. The philosophy behind Bath Taps into Science is simple: everyone can enjoy, and engage with science (and by science we always mean science, engineering, technology, maths, medicine and the social sciences) if it is presented in a fun, engaging and hands on manner. There is no question of dumbing down science, instead Bath Taps into Science aims to light science up. Over the years Bath Taps into Science has expanded and in 2016 consisted of 35 events including a family lecture, schools science fair and a family science fair. The success of the events have meant that over 300 people of all ages attended the family lecture, over 1400 students attended the schools fair at the University of Bath from a wide range of local schools and over 5,000 people visited the family science day in Victoria Park in the centre of Bath. The public event was followed by a partner workshop which gave partners an overview how they can work with CAMERA, followed by networking and brainstorming sessions for each theme area; focussing on industry challenges and opportunities for co-created projects. This was well-attended and led to further discussions and plans for future workshops and collaborations.

Motion capture technicians help capture motion data on shoots and then take the lead in motion editing that data so it can be used in research or commercial projects.

Existing skills and knowledge relating to the motion capture process, post production process and VR pipeline may be an advantage, but you don't need to have done motion capture before to secure this post. Results and Impact The Dagstuhl seminar brought together researchers and practitioners from academia and industry to discuss the state-of-the-art, current challenges, as well as promising future research directions in Real VR. Real VR, as defined by the seminar participants, pursues two overarching goals: facilitating the import of real-world scenes into head-mounted displays (HMDs), and attaining perceptual realism in HMDs. The vision of Real VR is enabling to experience movies, concerts, even live sports events in HMDs with the sense of immersion of really "being-there", unattainable by today's technologies.

Results and Impact Darren Cosker was invited to be a panel member for the Audiences of the Future 'Performance Demonstrators' Challenge at the Royal Shakespeare Company on 14 May 2018.

In November 2017 the Government announced the £33m Audiences of the Future programme, part of the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. Part of this ambitious challenge is the £16m Demonstrator Programme. The objective of this competition is to explore future global, mass market, commercial opportunities in immersive experiences and technologies through supporting a limited number of large and ambitious pre-commercial collaborations at scale. Each demonstrator will create a novel audience proposition that must reach an audience of more than 100,000 members of the public.

This event was supported by Future Demonstrator Competition UKRI to bring together potential bidders for each of the competition themes. The events are designed to enable bidders to find out more about the scope and ambition of the competition around each particular theme, engage with relevant projects that reflect the current state of the art, discuss sector challenges and opportunities, meet new partners and explore opportunities to collaborate.

Results and Impact Digital Catapult announces it has launched Augmentor, an equity free programme in partnership with Seedcamp, to support early stage tech businesses developing applications of immersive technologies. Dr Darren Cosker will act at one of the Augmentor mentors; to help advance next generation virtual, augmented and mixed reality early stage tech companies by providing technical and business mentorship from industry experts.

The Digital Catapult Centre in London will be available to successful Augmentor applicants as a space to work and collaborate and participants will also have full access to a state-of-the-art Immersive Lab at the centre.

The entrepreneurs signed up to the Augmentor programme will be some of the first to benefit from the facility, which will also be used as a space for organisations to demonstrate new immersive technologies, view and develop content and conduct user-testing. The programme will close with an investor showcase due to be held in May.

EPSRC research investment decisions are informed by independent peer review mainly from the College of Peer Reviewers. This consists of around 4,000 independent experts identified as appropriate to provide informed comments on proposals.

The college broadly represents the research community it serves, and is balanced in a number of ways. First, it contains a spread of expertise covering the full breadth of EPSRC remit, able to review across all areas. The college maintains an appropriate balance of age, sex, and ethnicity to reflect the wider research community, as well as a mix of academic and non-academic backgrounds, and geographic locations.

When accepting an invitation to join the college, members agree to review proposals for EPSRC, and, where appropriate, attend prioritisation panels. Each year, EPSRC requires as many as 12,000 reviews, and asks around 600 college members to attend prioritisation panels.

The GW4's The Technician Commitment aims to ensure visibility, recognition, career development and sustainability for technicians working in higher education and research, across all disciplines. GW4 have launched their GW4WARD technician video showcase series in recognition of their valuable and significant contributions. This new video series supports the aims of GW4WARD - to enhance the visibility and development of GW4 technical staff - by showcasing the experience of four different technicians from the universities of Bath, Bristol, Cardiff and Exeter. The videos highlight the breadth of different technical roles and their pivotal position in our teaching and research activities.

The European Pain Federation EFIC® is a multidisciplinary professional organisation in the field of pain research and medicine, consisting of the 37 European Chapters of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP®). Established in 1993, EFIC's constituent Chapters represent the Pain Societies of 37 European countries, and more than 20,000 physicians, basic researchers, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists and other healthcare professionals across Europe. They are all involved in pain treatment, management and research. From its headquarters in Diegem/Brussels, the federation runs its educational programmes such as the European Diploma in Pain Medicine and examination, Pain Schools, its journal, the European Journal of Pain, and support for its members in activities such as the European Year against Pain and national and international meetings. Over 700 people attended from a wide range of backgrounds.

In this half-day course, we took the audience on a journey from VR photography to VR video that began more than a century ago but which has accelerated tremendously in the last five years. We discussed both commercial state-of-the-art systems by Facebook, Google and Microsoft, as well as the latest research techniques and prototypes.

Results and Impact Dr Dario Cazzola organised the Spi-Ref (Spinal Research Framework) was an opportunity for gathering scientists, medical doctors, and patients to discuss and plan future avenues for researchers focusing on the analysis, monitoring, and assessment of spinal pathologies, such as ankylosing spondylitis and spondylarthritis, and spinal degeneration.
Spi-Ref was a 3-days workshop funded by the InternationalisationResearch Funding Scheme. Spi-Ref was held at University of Bath from the 9th to 13th January 2017, during which researchers from University of Pennsylvania, Nanyang Technological University, and University of Bath used different methodologies (in vivo, in vitro and in silico) to analyses spinal pathologies and injuries.

The SAP 2019 provides an intimate, immersive forum for researchers who combine knowledge, methods, and insights from perception research and computer science disciplines.

Jacob's co-author George Nicolaou is a recently graduated final year project student who helped collect data and design the experiment - a great example of how getting involved with the research that is going on in the department can lead to good things such as publication!

Results and Impact Dr Christof Lutteroth was interviewed for "The Science Hour" which was broadcast on the BBC World Service. The BBC World Service, the world's largest international broadcaster, broadcasts radio and television news, speech and discussions in 29 languages to many parts of the world on analogue and digital shortwave platforms, Internet streaming, podcasting, satellite, DAB, FM and MW relays. It was announced in November 2015 that the BBC World Service will start broadcasting in Pidgin and Yoruba in Nigeria, which will bring the total number of broadcast languages to 31. In November 2016 the BBC announced again that it would start broadcasting in additional languages including Amharic and Igbo, in its biggest expansion since the 1940s. In 2015 World Service reached an average of 210 million people a week. The English-language service broadcasts 24 hours a day.

For the past 2 years CAMERA's Neill Campbell has been working on the SmartROTO project with pioneering software producer Foundry and leading global visual effects company DNEG. The project combining research from industry and academia was set up to use artist assisted machine learning to speed up the traditionally time-consuming rotoscoping process.  As the project comes to a end Foundry reflect on what has been learnt and the possible next steps.

CAMERA took part in a collaborative event, where guests could immerse themselves in an evening of projection, take a tour of the physical and virtual realms of the exhibition and enjoy digital art workshops. Guests had a chance to experience augmented reality, using a HoloLens headset to find virtual pigs, captured by CAMERA, walking around in The Edge.

After Hours are special events which combine a unique mix of music, activities and arts experiences. This special event is the perfect way to enjoy a slice of culture and after-work drinks with friends and colleagues.

Results and Impact From 20 July-24 August 2018, The Fantastical Multimedia Pop-Up Project at The Edge (University of Bath), offered exhibition visitors an exciting new experience as part of a free "gallery take-over of virtual reality, interactive games, exhibits and art works at the intersection of arts, digital and science." 20th July to 24th August.

How can you make a pig act? You can't tell a pig to do that. What if you could record a pig moving in every possible direction, then stitch those movements together so they match an actor's movements? So, CAMERA went to a farm and motion captured the lovely Molly.

Results and Impact CAMERA organised two workshops with Immerse UK: University-Industry R&D Collaborations in Immersive Technologies. Secrets to Winning Innovation Funding and Running Successful Collaborative Projects in Partnership with Universities. Immerse UK and CAMERA teamed up to create two workshops aimed at catalysing new collaborations between UK Universities and innovative small businesses.

The theme of the workshops was leveraging cross-sector partnerships and enabling, immersive technologies to stimulate collaborative R&D projects for innovation and business growth. The workshops drew on the collective experience of collaborators from industry and academia, alongside funding providers and bid writers. Participants discussed what is involved in building successful collaborations with universities, what funding routes are available in relevant technology areas, and how best to access them. Participants left the workshops with a better understanding of the University research offering, collaboration routes, potential partnerships, relevant identified funding calls, and possibly a new project.

CAMERA were delighted to be asked to run two fully funded workshops for micro and SME companies focusing on successful University-Industry R&D collaborations in Immersive Technologies. We were pleased to welcome a wide range of SMEs, ranging from the fashion industry to documentary teams and one person start-ups. The two sold-out workshops drew on the collective experience of seasoned collaborators from industry and academia, including Marshmallowlaserfeast's Nell Whitley and Professor Adrian Hilton of the University of Surrey.

Delegates also heard from funding providers and experienced bid writers. Claire Tansley and Carrie Wootten gave valuable insights into national research funding and innovation networks, and Wavecrest's Jeff Clifford (former Head of R&D at Double Negative) took us through the most common types of collaborative R&D public grant funding and application processes.

Delegates also had the opportunity to informally discuss a variety of research areas with academics from various universities including Bath, Bath Spa, Ravensbourne, Surrey and Greenwich. Thanks also to Setsquared's Miles Davis for talking about the new Scale Up Programme, and University of Bath's Rosie Bennet, who took us through the new ERDF funded programmes on offer for digital technology businesses in the South West.

Attendees left with better insight into the university research offering, collaboration routes, potential partnerships, relevant identified funding calls, and even some new projects. We wish all our participants success and hope to work with many of them in the future.

Dr Pooya Soltani, working with researchers in Brazil, has published a study showing that active video games have similar positive health effects on the body as traditional exercises, such as jogging on a treadmill. The researchers say these games could be used by type 1 diabetics as a more enjoyable way to stay active and manage their condition.

Results and Impact WACV 2018 is the IEEE's and the PAMI-TC's premier meeting on applications of computer vision. It was held in March, 2018 at Harvey's Casino in Lake Tahoe, NV/CA. Research was presented by Aki Salo.

This has contributed to the investment in a new machine vision system which will allow the developed methodology to be applied in normal sports training environments and so will now facilitate impact as it can inform training practices of British skeleton athletes and sprinters.
