Abstract
Graphene's unique properties make it ideal for a variety of applications, in particular for ultraflexible electronic devices,
such as displays, touch screens, e-papers, smart packaging and smart textiles. These require flexible conductive films as
electrodes and interconnections, and metallic films or grids are currently used as back planes in displays and touch
screens. However, in addition to being expensive, these are environmentally unstable, brittle and not fully flexible (e.g.
conformable). Graphene as a flexible conductive layer could underpin plastic electronics advantages of low temperature
processing, printing flexibility and lower cost manufacturing. This project aims to demonstrate the viability of graphene as a
highly conductive flexible layer in a flexible active matrix array that can be used to drive Electrophoretic (EPD) and Organic
Light Emitting Diode (OLED) displays. This will exploit graphene based inks as a cost-effective replacement of currently
used expensive metals, and will demonstrate the manufacturability and scalability of the production of graphene in an
industrial context. Inks will be formulated with high loading of graphene (>10g/l), to achieve the required conductivity and
processability for a variety of printing technologies (bar coating, ink-jet printing and flexographic printing) for flexible active
matrix arrays that can be used to drive EPDs and OLEDs. Integrating graphene in a flexible active matrix array will show
the potential for graphene in enabling a range of foldable consumer electronics applications.

Planned Impact
The vision of the Cambridge Graphene Centre is to take graphene from a state of raw potential to a point where it can
revolutionise flexible, wearable and transparent (opto)electronics, with a manifold return in innovation and exploitation.
Graphene can become a novel technological platform for the realisation of almost any device component, including
transistors, batteries, optoelectronic components, photovoltaic cells, (photo)detectors, ultrafast lasers, bio- and physicochemical
sensors, etc. Such change in the paradigm of device manufacturing may revolutionise the global industry. The
importance of graphene was recognised by the 2011 statement of the Chancellor of the Exchequer aiming at taking it from
"the British laboratory" to the "British factory floor". Not only does our vision align with this mandate, but it also exploits and
strengthens several key areas of national importance where the UK has recognised excellence, such as printed electronics energy and RF & Microwave Communications. Thus, we will strive for both economic impact, by stimulating new UKmanufactured
high-value products, and societal benefits, by utilising graphene in potentially many areas including security,
energy efficiency and quality of life.
The beneficiaries of our research will be a much wider group than the investigators' immediate professional circle.
Considering the private sector, we have already indentified tens of companies that will benefit from our work. We consider
the civilian sectors of healthcare, telecommunication, energy and homeland security to be those in which applications
based on graphene can make significant impact on society at large. This will foster economic competitiveness and enhance
quality of life.
Policy-makers, within international, national, local government will also benefit. If the vision of graphene as the material
of the 21st century is fulfilled, there will be a need for its properties, benefits, applications and advantageousness
compared to current technology to be know by the relevant public bodies. For example, any new policy on energy saving,
or mobile communications may need to include a reference to the benefits, or limitations, of graphene-based devices.
Economic resilience and innovation require post-doctoral researchers trained in new areas. We will contribute to
increasing the talent pool for the future graphene industry. This project will create excellent opportunities to train students of
the Graphene Technology CDT, based in the Cambridge Graphene Centre, in various aspects of graphene manufacturing.
This will develop skilled researchers and will stimulate the sustainability of graphene engineering research and future
commercialisation opportunities across a variety of sectors.

Results and Impact | Graphene Flagship researchers have developed a graphene-based optoelectronic mixer that operates at high frequencies and broad bandwidth - which could be implemented in future telecom and datacom devices, as well as RADAR and LIDAR systems, both useful for autonomous vehicles. These results, just published in Nature Communications, are the result of an international collaboration between Graphene Flagship industrial partner Thales Research and Technology, France, with academic researchers at Graphene Flagship partner institutions the University of Lille and IEMN, France, and the University of Cambridge, UK. The collaborative ecosystem fostered by the EU-funded Graphene Flagship project was paramount to enable these discoveries, establishing Europe as a technological leader in the field of next-generation telecommunications. |
