UKCRIC - UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure & Cities: Newcastle Laboratories
Lead Research Organisation:
Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering
Abstract
The UK Collaboratorium for Research in Infrastructure & Cities (UKCRIC) will provide leadership and support for the development and growth of a coordinated and coherent, world class, UK-based national infrastructure research community, spanning at least 14 universities. It will engage government, city and commercial policy makers, investors, citizens and academia in a joint venture that drives innovation and value creation in the exploitation of services provided by national infrastructure. Through central coordination, providing a focal point for knowledge transfer, UKCRIC will support a step-change in the nation's approach to infrastructure investment.
A key UKCRIC objective is, through the coordinated investment in a range of national research facilities, to directly address the first four Engineering Grand Challenges prioritised by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in 2015: (i) Sustainable engineering solutions to provide water for all; (ii) Future Cities; (iii) Engineering across length scales; and, (iv) Identifying risk and building resilience into engineered systems.
This application is for a capital investment contribution towards the development of urban infrastructure engineering research facilities to be based on Newcastle University's Science Central campus development. This will provide world class, and unique, research facilities in surface water management. Furthermore, by providing the research infrastructure to interconnect multiple infrastructure systems UKCRIC@Newcastle will create a unique 'integrated infrastructure' research facility to understand system integration and infrastructure interdependencies.
As a result of these activities, UKCRIC@Newcastle will support the wider UKCRIC aims to:
1 Generate new knowledge, technologies and digital solutions that reduce the risk of, and add value to, the very large investments in infrastructure that will have to be made over the next 50 years;
2 Develop innovative solutions, including digital solutions, to infrastructure problems that reduce the cost of ownership of infrastructure and enhance the value of derived services;
3 Radically improve the resilience of infrastructure systems and services against extreme events;
4 Grow and maintain the capacity and capability of infrastructure professionals so as to enhance domestic and global commercial market opportunities.

Description | The UKCRIC National Green Infrastructure Facility is fully operational and was opened by the Minister for Universities in Jan 2020. Research has now started in the lysimeters, SuDS testbeds and swale to understand the performance of different vegetation and drainage media on green infrastructure performance. We have appointed a series of researchers with funding from additional research projects as UKCRIC funding is for capital only. Additional, funded research projects awarded as a result of this capital award have been underway since the facility became partially operational in 2017. Findings from these projects include improvements to the design, construction, management and operation of Green Infrastructure assets as well as an improved understanding of how expectations and opportunities around its use may be better considered in regional, national and international policy and practice. |
Exploitation Route | https://linktr.ee/NGIF_UK This is a new research facility. Recently awarded research funding is already initiating new, collaborative research projects with industry and academia. |

Description | The research from the National Green Infrastructure Facility has helped inform and underpin the Newcastle Blue Green Declaration (https://www.susdrain.org/news/articles/blue-green_path_urban_flood_resilience.html). This is driving a transformation and urban greening of the city in partnership with key stakeholders, agencies and businesses. Through research and industry funded projects, work is ongoing to improve design guidance of urban green infrastructure. This includes feeding into the Institution of Civil Engineers Blue-Green Infrastructure Manual which is shaping how engineers design and implement green infrastructure across the UK and internationally. Funded projects include the following: PLEXUS, looking at renewable ground-source heat exchange from green infrastructure; CACTUS, looking at the use of geo-composite barrier systems to mitigate urban surface runoff while protecting buried infrastructure, foundations and pavements; ACHILLES, Programme Grant looking at the impacts of climate change on the deterioration of transport and flood prevention assets including the impact of vegetation; UGDaMS, improving the engineering design of bioretention devises (SuDS). The facility has been used by a growing number of MSc and PhD students for their research and the facility is part of the EPSRC WIREC CDT, NERC IAPETUS DTP, NERC FLOOD CDT etc. Non-UKRI-funded work includes CASE studentship awards from Network Rail, Northumbrian Water Ltd, Arup, and Stantec. A wide selection of impact strategies have been embedded within these projects, including direct dissemination to industry-based project partners via regular, targeted impact advisory board meetings and seminar presentations to companies and learned society interest groups. As a demonstrably impactful 'national facility' in the area of Green Infrastructure, Royal Academy of Engineering, EPSRC and international Research Fellowship holders (e.g. EU Marie Curie fellowship) and senior academic sabbatical holders (e.g. Villanova University, US) have, and continue to seek out opportunities to be hosted and engage directly with our research activities on-site. |

Description | Data from the UKCRIC National Green Infrastructure Facility: Advancing Knowledge of Green Infrastructure and Sustainable Drainage Systems The UKCRIC National Green Infrastructure Facility (NGIF) is a full-scale living laboratory for multidisciplinary testing and demonstration of fully functional green infrastructure and sustainable drainage systems, based at Newcastle University, in the North-East of England. The NGIF is based in the Urban Sciences Building (NE4 5TG) and features a number of heavily instrumented green infrastructure features along Holmes Avenue. This dataset forms a complete and up-to-date repository of all data collected at the NGIF. Data is presented for the NGIF Lysimeters, Ensemble 'rain gardens', Swale, Green Roof and other instrumented on-site GI features. *A complete dataset of NGIF data is found in the file 'NGIF.zip'. This is supplemented by a Read Me file ('Read Me.pdf'), containing relevant information on the data and experiments. Consultation of the read me documentation before opening the dataset file is recommended. A supplementary video ('Video.mp4') is also attached for background and context on the facility* Further information: Some data is also available for visualisation and plotting on the NGIF data app: www.ngif.ncl.ac.uk. Results and Impact | Bioretention research and practice This free event, hosted by The University of Sheffield and Newcastle University, provided insight into the outcomes and impacts of a three-year collaborative research project (Urban Green DaMS) to improve design parameters for biofilters/raingardens. Drainage/flood protection engineers need to be able to quantify how SuDS devices respond to rainfall events - including the extreme events that are responsible for flooding - to effectively use SuDS for stormwater management purposes. Biofilters (also known as raingardens) manage runoff from catchments typically ten times larger than their own plan area and provide filtration of pollutants associated with road runoff. The 'Urban Green DaMS' project collected data from a combination of full-scale test beds (lysimeters) at Newcastle University and column tests at The University of Sheffield. The data will help understand and quantify the influence of design parameters (growing media composition, planting selection and outlet control configuration) on the rainfall retention (ET rates) and runoff detention performance (K values and outlet controls) of lined biofilter systems. Findings of the three-year EPSRC-funded collaborative research project were summarised by the researchers and use of the data within modelling for rainwater management was discussed. SuDS practitioners talked about the impact of this work on design, implementation, regulatory targets, and guidance including incorporation into the forthcoming update of CIRIA's The SuDS Manual (C753F). They also provided an overview of important ongoing retrofit SuDS projects. |
