UK Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Hub for Offshore Energy Asset Integrity Management

Lead Research Organisation: Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Engineering and Physical Science

Abstract

The international offshore energy industry currently faces the triple challenges of an oil price expected to remain less than $50 a barrel, significant expensive decommissioning commitments of old infrastructure (especially North Sea) and small margins on the traded commodity price per KWh of offshore renewable energy. Further, the offshore workforce is ageing as new generations of suitable graduates prefer not to work in hazardous places offshore. Operators therefore seek more cost effective, safe methods and business models for inspection, repair and maintenance of their topside and marine offshore infrastructure. Robotics and artificial intelligence are seen as key enablers in this regard as fewer staff offshore reduces cost, increases safety and workplace appeal.

The long-term industry vision is thus for a completely autonomous offshore energy field, operated, inspected and maintained from the shore. The time is now right to further develop, integrate and de-risk these into certifiable evaluation prototypes because there is a pressing need to keep UK offshore oil and renewable energy fields economic, and to develop more productive and agile products and services that UK startups, SMEs and the supply chain can export internationally. This will maintain a key economic sector currently worth £40 billion and 440,000 jobs to the UK economy, and a supply chain adding a further £6 billion in exports of goods and services.

The ORCA Hub is an ambitious initiative that brings together internationally leading experts from 5 UK universities with over 30 industry partners (>£17.5M investment). Led by the Edinburgh Centre of Robotics (HWU/UoE), in collaboration with Imperial College, Oxford and Liverpool Universities, this multi-disciplinary consortium brings its unique expertise in: Subsea (HWU), Ground (UoE, Oxf) and Aerial robotics (ICL); as well as human-machine interaction (HWU, UoE), innovative sensors for Non Destructive Evaluation and low-cost sensor networks (ICL, UoE); and asset management and certification (HWU, UoE, LIV).

The Hub will provide game-changing, remote solutions using robotics and AI that are readily integratable with existing and future assets and sensors, and that can operate and interact safely in autonomous or semi-autonomous modes in complex and cluttered environments. We will develop robotics solutions enabling accurate mapping of, navigation around and interaction with offshore assets that support the deployment of sensors networks for asset monitoring. Human-machine systems will be able to co-operate with remotely located human operators through an intelligent interface that manages the cognitive load of users in these complex, high-risk situations. Robots and sensors will be integrated into a broad asset integrity information and planning platform that supports self-certification of the assets and robots.

Planned Impact

Our project represents an unprecedented effort to use Robotics and AI to revolutionise Asset Integrity Management in the offshore energy sector to enable cheaper, safer and more efficient working practices and move towards a fully autonomous offshore energy field, operated, inspected and maintained from the shore. Up to £17.8M of cash support from the industry demonstrates the timeliness and strong industry interest for our research agenda. Beyond its academic impact detailed elsewhere, this project will bring about a step change in the feasibility of large scale monitoring for subsea assets such as cables, risers, seabed structures and marine energy devices. To maximise the impact of our research, we have built in mechanisms to maximise the translation of research into innovation, products and industry take-up.

1- Strong industry involvement: Our initial research focus is built around 6 developed Use Cases and 7 Capability Challenges for RAI applied to offshore energy asset integrity for marine, topside (i.e. on platform) and aerial domains developed in collaboration with industry (initial workshop July 2017, 40 people attending). Regular 6-monthly demonstrations of existing research will inform our partners of the evolving maturity of the research and trigger potential exploitation. Annual workshops to refine these and update the research roadmap will be organised by the Hub with the support and guidance of our Industrial Leadership and Opportunities Panel (ILOP). From these, Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) will form from Open Calls initiated by ILOP, the PI and the academic team. These projects will be funded from the £20M Partnership Resource Fund (PRF) (£2.6M EPSRC, £17.8M industry partners). JIPs will comprise SMEs, startups and others from the supply chain to make capabilities more robust, reliable and certifiable in increasingly realistic domains up to TRL7. These efforts will be supported by a full time impact manager.

2- Fostering wider collaborations: The hub will expand its research and innovation reach to other RAI Hubs initially through the bi-annual Hub PI meetings, where opportunities across hub boundaries will be identified. We will aim to align common science and innovation goals through the relevant Hub management structures to provide greater gearing whilst recognising the distinctness of the environments and markets. Regular Open Calls will seek research partners (funded by both EPSRC and Partners from the PRF) to close scientific gaps in the core WP programme based on advice by the International Scientific Advisory Panel (ISAP). This funding will be accessible by the best teams across the world, thus fostering collaborations at an international level. We will also seek to exploit synergies created from other hubs in other domains to have an impact on the anticipated ISCF RAI Challenge funding in 2019. Through this PI Forum, we will also reach out to the successful iUK projects (parallel ISCF RAI call) to seek synergies, overlap and opportunities for rapid innovation advancements.
Standardisation: A crucial output of the project will be working closely with regulators, especially project partner Lloyds Register, to develop standards and formal requirements for offshore RAI self-certification. We will also explore defining an ISO industry standard for dialogue act annotation for interaction with autonomous systems and AI (similar to e.g. DiAML) to encourage adoption of the developed techniques in a variety of domains.

3- Engaging the wider public in research: We have a wide experience of public engagement through our RAS-CDT (BBC News @10, Blue Peter, Sky News, Twitter, Facebook) and will continue to our engagement strategy supported by our full time Hub Manager.

Description The project aimed at developing robotics solutions to support the delivery of the industry long term vision of offshore assets inspected, maintained and operated by teams of robots, remotely supervised from shore by a collaborating team of human operators. In order to fulfill this vision we have developed and demonstrated new inspection sensors, algorithms and robotic platforms which enable the autonomous inspection of offshore assets from the air, on the ground and underwater. Similarly, we have developed new planning and manipulation techniques enabling robot to safely interact with their environment to perform complex manipulation tasks autonomously or in close collaboration with human operators (shared autonomy) in complex dynamic environments and across data links of variable bandwidth and latency. We have paid specific attention to the development human robot interfaces enabling humans to stay situated when collaborating with multiple robots, each generating large amount of data and information through the ever increasing use of machine learning. We have developed methods enabling the decisions made by these algorithms to be explained to human operators, hence improving the necessary trust in smart machines and effective human machine teaming. Finally, we have integrated out robots, assets they operate on and the data and decision the algorithms generate into digital twins which can be used to monitor mission execution and assets in real time as well as being used as simulation tools for pre-mission validation and new technology insertion. This aspect of the work was greatly accelerated by Covid 19, more by constraints than design. Finally, all are work has been published in top robotics journal and conferences (and won multiple awards) as well as media outfits for public understanding of science and presented in schools, science festivals and online.
Taken together, the achievements of this project have brought a significant changes in robotics in the UK. The robotics academic community and network we have created (13 UK Universities) now understands the needs and challenges of using robotics in offshore environments and conversely the industry is now aware what is possible now and in the medium term using robotics. New technologies have been developed and demonstrated to industry and we now have a roadmap for technology insertion, backed up by industrial investment. Finally we have a network of industrial and academic partners who know and trust each other to co-develop the future solutions required to support the energy transition and net-zero targets of the UK.
Exploitation Route We have direct engagement with offshore energy companies with industrial funded projects, covering all aspects of our work. We have also 4 spin out companies either created (2) or in the process of being created (2) to commercialise the new technologies developed in this project.
Having engaged with Technology Leadership Board (TLB) to develop an initiative to support the development of robotics within the energy sector as it moves into renewables and a net zero future, we now have a large £4M project funded (OLTER) which will drive the development and adoption of robotics by industry. We are also leading a collaboration with our fellow ISCF hubs to develop new pathways for research using connected digital twins. We are working closely with the Offshore Renewable Catapult to develop a new user group for companies in the renewables sector interested in exploring the adoption and adaption of robotic technology.
As the project nears completion, we have worked on a number of proposals to exploit the technology in other sectors. This activity has led to another £7M of new research in construction, healthcare and agriculture.

Description Over £6M of cash or in-kind support had been received from industry through 78 individual research projects, PhD sponsorships, user engagements, and supply of equipment, hardware, software, data and asset samples. A further 8 projects are still in discussion or pending approval with an approximate value of over £1.5M. In addition to this, we have one spin-out operational as a company and three in different stages of development, alongside two patent applications enabling developments to be licensable to companies. This progress has been achieved as a result of over 700 industrial engagements with almost 130 different organisations and attending 37 conferences and industry exhibitions. Two white papers have been published, written in conjunction with our close industry partners ORE Catapult, Offshore Wind Innovation Hub and Xodus. Since the ORCA Hub started, the offshore robotics ecosystem has evolved significantly. The ORCA Hub has taken a lead role in driving new initiatives, supporting industrial programmes and roadmaps, and initiating new work streams, aligning with the offshore energy industry as it responds to the energy transition and the increased pace of activity in the renewables sector. We are one of the funding members of OLTER, a new industry and government supported initiative to accelerate the take up of robotics solutions in the offshore energy sector and especially the offshore renewable sector as we transition to net-zero. Finally, we have entered in a number of strategic partnerships with industrial partners to exploit the outcomes of the Hub. These are currently commercially confidential.

Description A large enclosed 10x6.2x5.5m flight arena (Arena), equipped with 16 Vicon T40 tracking cameras, capable of tracking multiple flying objects in 6 degrees of freedom, with millimetre accuracy. Tracking data can be used for closed-loop control of vehicles.
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Year Produced 2019
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact The Arena is the first of its kind in Europe, enabling engineers to test the next generation of aerial robotics for urban environments and extreme conditions. Researchers in the Arena are able to simulate different terrains in the air, the ocean and on land. The space also enables engineers to create extreme conditions such as fire, smoke and heat to simulate how the next generation of drones will perform in harsh environments. The research focus in Arena encompasses two main themes: (i) physical adaptation; (ii) cybernetics adaptation. The physical adaptation includes morphological changes in different environmental conditions for aerial and multi-terrain robots to land, perch, locomote or \"stay still\" in narrow and cluttered spaces. The cybernetical adaptation includes adjustments at the algorithmic level to maintain the stability, avoid the collisions and the track the safe and reliable trajectories. These activities are considered holistically with potential human interactions, neuroscience, and bio-inspiration.

Title Development of a new multi-sensing robotic platform for monitoring offshore energy platforms
Description the design and development of a low cost, low power, multi-sensing robotic platform for inspection and monitoring of offshore infrastructures. The robot, called Limpet, is equipped with several (9) exteroceptive sensing modalities, that can be used to monitor a wide range of environmental and physical parameters in on/offshore environments. The sensors incorporated on the Limpet are temperature, humidity, pressure, optical, distance, sound, magnetic, accelerometer and gyroscope. The Limpet uses Wi-Fi to communicate and send data to the PC. The Limpet has a diameter of 50 mm, and the total cost of electronic components used in its design is about £22. The Limpet is powered by a rechargeable 3.6V 160 mAh lithium-ion coin cell battery. The Limpet has a battery life @160 mAh of 0.87 to 1600 hours, depending on the activity level.
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Year Produced 2018
Provided To Others? No
Impact The Limpet will be encapsulated in a protective housing, making it more robust and enduring in harsh environment. Robust agents will have a longer lifetime, need less maintenance and require lower repair costs. There will be little human interaction when the entire Deployment-Maintenance-Recovery (DMR) system is going to be set, therefore the system could be considered semi-autonomous. The Limpet is designed explicitly for manufacturability; it consists of a single PCB, hence mass manufacture is a simple case of placing a batch order with a PCB foundry. Limpet's PCB consists of SMD-only components and can be autonomously populated with pick-and-place machines at the point of manufacture. Therefore, it is easy to mass-produce the Limpet system and deploy them in huge collectives for inspecting on/offshore infrastructures. The first milestone will be to deploy a Limpet on an infrastructure onshore (topside) to collect and transmit high-quality data. The DMR aspect will rely on deploying the Limpets with drones.

Organisation EDF Energy
Country United Kingdom
Sector Private
PI Contribution Heriot-Watt University demonstrated the use of the Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Radar on a decommissioned wind turbine blade owned by EDF.
Collaborator Contribution EDF provided access to the decommissioned wind turbine blade and subject domain expertise. The value of the in-kind contribution is estimated based on the number of planning and analysis meetings attended by EDF and the onsite support provided by them during the trial.
Impact Following successful experiments using the FMCW Radar scanning wind turbine blade sections that were loaned to Heriot-Watt from EDF and sent to our lab in 2020, EDF commissioned a trial of the technology scanning an old wind turbine blade that was grounded at their Teesside office. The trial successfully demonstrated the FMCW's ability to pickup internal features of the wind turbine blade by scanning the blade from the outside and without physical contact. This further demonstrates the potential of the FMCW as a non-contact based wind turbine blade inspection tool that could be deployed by UAVs in operational settings. The trial was another completed step in the process of proving the FMCW as a new inspection tool for this domain.

Type Of Technology Software
Year Produced 2020
Impact The integration of Doppler Velocity Log (DVL) data into Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping (SLAM) provides a more accurate localisation in scenarios in which the visual information is insufficient, such as turbulent water, drastic robot movements and poor visibility. In these cases, the use of DVL data is used to estimate the position of the robot, which produces more accurate mapping. The ultimate goal is to produce an accurate representation of the map, so that inspection could be performed.

Results and Impact The extraordinary and vastly unexplored capabilities of soft robots are attracting researchers from deeply heterogeneous branches. Marine soft robots place themselves in a niche hot topic with huge potential and vast applications. The workshop will focus on two fundamental yet not codified aspects of marine soft robotics: fabrication and application. On the fabrication side, sub-sea robots face the common challenges of terrestrial soft robots, e.g. minimising the number of controls for infinite degrees of freedom, unconventional manufacturing, and nontraditional materials. Marine robots also have to face the unfamiliar underwater environment. More over in salt water the materials currently used in the fabrication of soft robots degrade at a different rate when compared to the terrestrial environment. Sub-sea robots also experience fast bio-fouling, which does not constitute a problem on land, given the same time scale. Useful applications in the underwater sphere have the potential to revolutionise ocean sciences and marine engineering. The discussion will swing between current fabrication techniques and applications. The workshop aims to provide a definition of a common ground between marine and robotic sciences, define shared challenges and open a dialogue to define future direction of the fascinating marine soft robots research.

Results and Impact The University of Edinburgh has a long and proud tradition of leadership in ocean research extending back to the pioneering HMS Challenger expedition (1872-76) led by Sir Charles Wyville Thomson during his time as Regius Chair of Natural History. Today, research targeting healthy and productive oceans in Edinburgh crosses disciplines from marine science and engineering to law and policy, aquaculture genetics and health, food security, and sustainability.

Despite the excellent ocean-related research being done by individuals and small groups, the University has little cross-institutional awareness and limited external visibility in this arena. We aim to change this as we approach the 150th anniversary of the Challenger expedition in 2022, Scotland's Year of Coasts and Waters in 2020 and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). To build an ocean research community at the University of Edinburgh, we invite researchers from across the University to join in a one day forum to discuss marine science, engineering and aquaculture research, and how we can move forward to increase our impact, maximise our involvement in these initiatives, and address United Nations sustainable development goals and other policy drivers.

The forum will be organised around the six societal goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science:

A clean ocean where sources of pollution are identified and removed
A healthy and resilient ocean where marine ecosystems are mapped and protected
A predictable ocean where society has the capacity to understand current and future ocean conditions
A safe ocean where people are protected from ocean hazards
A sustainably harvested and productive ocean ensuring the provision of food supply
A transparent ocean with open access to data, information and technologies
The forum will lay the groundwork for a high-level position paper outlining how the University of Edinburgh will respond to the societal goals of the UN Decade of Ocean Science. It will collate information on the University's expertise, infrastructure and relevant research and teaching/capacity building activities.

Results and Impact The research suggests that teaching materials science, mechanical engineering, computer science, biology and chemistry as a combined discipline could help students develop the skills they need to create lifelike artificially intelligent (AI) robots as researchers.

Known as Physical AI, these robots would be designed to look and behave like humans or other animals while possessing intellectual capabilities normally associated with biological organisms. These robots could in future help humans at work and in daily living, performing tasks that are dangerous for humans, and assisting in medicine, caregiving, security, building and industry.

Results and Impact Researchers at Imperial College London have proposed "physical artificial intelligence" as a new multidisciplinary area of research that could be vital to producing lifelike intelligent robots in the future.

Writing in the Nature Machine Intelligence journal, the team argue that teaching materials science, mechanical engineering, computer science, biology and chemistry as a combined discipline would help students and researchers develop lifelike artificially intelligent robots.

Results and Impact Industrial demo at the Fire Service college, 27-29/10/2018
Oxford Robotics Institute is part of two Research Hubs which focus on robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) that can be deployed in extreme environments. The hubs, both funded by UK Research and Innovation as part of the UK's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, are ORCA, targeting applications for the offshore oil and gas industry, and RAIN, targeting applications in the nuclear industry.

Central to these hubs is the translation of research results into industry-led use cases, and, more generally, the transfer of advanced robotics and AI knowledge into UK industry. As part of this agenda, on 29th October 2018 ORI helped lead a demonstration day for the ORCA Hub at the Fire Service College in Gloucestershire. The site hosts a number of test sites, usually used to train fire fighters, but for this event it was taken over by robots to see if our technology was able to perform a range of tasks far away from controlled lab conditions. As appropriate for research targeting offshore oil and gas, our demonstrations took place on an oil rig mockup, complete with fire damaged living compartments, a variety of storage vessels, and treacherous surfaces. The event was attended by representatives from the oil and gas industries and EPSRC.

The ORI demonstrations focused on showcasing our ORCA- and RAIN-funded research around autonomous systems for industrial inspection and monitoring. For this we are developing technology to provide robust autonomous navigation and localisation across a variety of extreme environments, and also perceptual capabilities for long-term structural monitoring and change detection.

In the first demonstration Ioannis Havoutis showcased DRS's research on legged mobility for inspection. This was done using the ANYmal quadruped robot and DRS's home-developed remote operation software stack, that allows the operator to supervise the progress of the mission and plan the robot's next actions. The robot started at a distance to the oil rig and demonstrated its ability to localise its position relative to a prior 3D model of the environment using LIDAR. After this, ANYmal was asked to reach a target area within the oil rig. First, it navigated through the main corridor and over patches of uneven tarmac. Then, the robot needed to overcome a 25cm separating barrier. We took advantage of ANYmal's very large range of motion to invert its leg configuration and to traverse the barrier. The quadruped then navigated to an industrial staircase, using a speedy trotting gait and climbed the steps up using a walking gait called FreeGait. Once it reached the landing it entered the facility and explored the connected rooms.

Following this Nick Hawes presented results from across the ORI on long-term inspection from ground vehicles. The first inspection demonstration showcased teach-and-repeat navigation and 3D reconstruction from a Clearpath Husky platform. The robot was first "taught" a path through the environment (in this case the first floor of the oil rig)
