Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description We have developed ultrafast laser fabrication techniques that allow us to fabricate structures at depth more precisely, and also that allow us to fabricate structures with increased speed.
Exploitation Route The ultrafast laser writing techniques we have developed may be of strong interest to future commercial partners, and we are considering how best to exploit them commercially in the future. this could be via an innovate uk grant or similar.
Sectors Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology

Description The beam shaping techniques we have developed have a strong potential to impact the potential applications for which ultrafast laser in volume processing will be useful. One such application is the ultrafast laser assisted selective etching of macroscale fused silica structures. We have recently demonstrated, for example, how ultrafast laser selective etching can be used to fabricated fused silica fibre preforms: C. A. Ross, K. Harrington, J. M. Stone, T. A. Birks, and R. R. Thomson, "Ultrafast Laser Fabricated Fused Silica Fibre Preforms," in Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics, Technical Digest Series (Optica Publishing Group, 2022), paper SW5K.2. ....and we have applied for a patent to protect this approach.
