Mirror symmetry, Berkovich spaces and the Minimal Model Programme

Abstract

Algebraic geometry studies the shapes of geometric objects that can be defined by means of polynomials equations, leading to profound interactions between number theory, algebra and geometry. Since the 1990s, physics has exerted a major and surprising influence on algebraic geometry through the theory of mirror symmetry, which grew out of string theory, a proposal to describe fundamental particles mathematically as tiny vibrating strings. Models of the universe in string theory take as input a specific type of object in algebraic geometry: a so-called Calabi-Yau variety, named after the mathematicians Eugenio Calabi and Shing-Tung Yau. These objects attracted the attention of physicists because of their special symmetry properties. The Calabi-Yau variety is responsible for the 6 "hidden dimensions" that are postulated in string theory to explain the fundamental properties of particles.
Physicists soon realized that the Calabi-Yau variety is not uniquely determined by the physical model: rather, Calabi-Yau varieties seemed to come in "mirror pairs" giving rise to equivalent theories. Algebraic geometers were forced to take this idea very seriously after some spectacular applications to enumerative geometry (counting special types of curves living on Calabi-Yau varieties) around 1990. The main challenge for algebraic geometers was to provide mathematical foundations for these ideas, that is, give an exact definition of what it means to be a mirror pair, and devise techniques to construct such pairs. This is still an ongoing story, but much progress has been made. This project is concerned with one of the mathematical approaches to mirror symmetry, developed by Kontsevich and Soibelman: the non-archimedean approach to the Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture.
The SYZ conjecture is an ambitious attempt to give a geometric explanation of mirror symmetry, and it has been very influential in mathematics. Around 2000, Kontsevich and Soibelman had the groundbreaking insight that one should be able to find the structures predicted by the SYZ conjecture in a seemingly unrelated field: non-archimedean geometry, a branch of geometry and analysis that was originally designed to solve problems in number theory.
In the last few years, I have realized an important part of Kontsevich and Soibelman's proposal, by introducing a new ingredient into the picture: the minimal model programme (MMP) in birational geometry. This programme is one of the most successful developments in algebraic geometry in the last 40 years; in 2018, the Cambridge mathematician Caucher Birkar received the Fields medal (the most prestigious award in mathematics) for his contributions to the MMP. The aim of the MMP is to classify all the geometric objects that arise in algebraic geometry. I have discovered that one can use non-archimedean geometry as a dictionary to transfer questions and results back and forth between the field of mirror symmetry and the MMP, thus providing new tools to study both fields simultaneously. The goal of this project is to further exploit these interactions between mirror symmetry, non-archimedean geometry, and birational geometry. In this way, I aim to prove some of the central conjectures in the non-archimedean approach to mirror symmetry, and to develop new tools to understand the MMP.

Planned Impact

Societal and economic impact. The broad impact of mathematics on society is undeniable and has been quantified in various economic impact studies. All of the applications of mathematics in our everyday lives have their roots in curiosity-driven fundamental research, and the applications were often impossible to foresee at the time the mathematical foundations were laid. Concrete applications of this type of ``blue skies'' research usually become apparent only after a significant period of time, and in ways that are very hard to predict, since they depend on subsequent developments and future interactions with other fields of research. In the present stage, the principal motivations for this project are internal to mathematics and mathematical physics; it will contribute to a healthy theoretical basis on which future applications can flourish.

Interdisciplinary aspects. An important asset of this proposal is its interdisciplinary nature. The theory of mirror symmetry in geometry grew out of mathematical physics (string theory) and it is difficult to imagine how it could have been discovered without the physicists' input. In this proposal, we combine the theory of mirror symmetry with non-archimedean geometry and the minimal model programme in birational geometry. Non-archimedean geometry originated in number theory, but it has given rise to an impressive spectrum of applications in other fields, as well. The minimal model programme is one of the most fundamental developments in geometry in the last 40 years; in 2018, the Cambridge mathematician Caucher Birkar received the Fields medal (the most prestigious prize in mathematics) for his contributions in this field. All of these research domains will benefit from our research project, which promises to unveil new and profound interactions between them.

Training of young researchers. Throughout my career, I have made a special effort for the training of PhD students and beginning postdocs, through the supervision of PhD theses, international lecture series and the organization of schools and conferences. The enthusiasm and original views of junior researchers refresh my own perspective on mathematics. I will keep up these practices for the dissemination of the results of this project, to train a new generation of mathematicians.

Public engagement: The proposed project is of a highly technical nature, which makes it difficult to communicate the results to a general audience. However, it is part of a broader story about the interactions between number theory, geometry and physics, and this story certainly deserves to be told in schools and at public events. I believe that a taste of current research is the best way to motivate children to study mathematics, and to keep the public convinced of the benefits of the fundamental sciences.

Description (1) The study of rationality properties of algebraic varieties is one of the oldest topics in algebraic geometry, but also one of the most difficult ones. Despite spectacular progress in the last 10 years, many fundamental questions have been open for fifty years. We have introduced a powerful new method in this field by using ideas from other branches of algebraic geometry (especially motivic integration and non-archimedean/tropical geometry), resulting in the solution of several major open problems. We are convinced that the applications of this method are far from exhausted, and will try to apply it to further central questions in the field.
(2) We have also studied various aspects of a conjectural framework put forward by Kontsevich and Soibelman. It concerns a non-archimedean interpretation of the SYZ conjecture, an important open problem that grew out of mathematical physics (string theory). We have provided a counterexample for one of the conjectures but identified natural sufficient conditions for it to hold. We have also worked out the first class of non-trivial examples for the non-archimedean period conjecture (a recipe for the calculation of fundamental invariants that govern the variation of geometric objects in families).
Exploitation Route (1) The techniques we have developed are quite general and can be applied to a wide array of rationality problems. They have been received enthusiastically by the research community and are leading to further breakthroughs by other researchers.
(2) We are connecting our results to other approaches to the SYZ conjecture, most notably the work of Toy Yue Yu on enumerative non-archimedean geometry, and the work of Gross and Siebert and their collaborators on toric degenerations. This will improve our understanding of the individual approaches as well as the relations between them.

I have written a paper together with Prof. Wim Veys (KU Leuven) and our joint PhD student Naud Potemans (KU Leuven) identifying a crucial mistake in earlier work by Chenyang Xu (see list of outputs). We are now developing strategies to propose a correct definition of Xu's dlt zeta function.
Collaborator Contribution The first counterexamples to Xu's theorem were discovered by Potemans in the context of his PhD thesis. Veys has helped to streamline these examples and proposed a strategy towards a correct statement in dimension 3, which we are currently implementing.

Results and Impact Study group on Temkin's work on norms on pluridifferential forms over non-archimedean fields; this was set up as a hybrid joint activity between my research teams at Imperial College London and KU Leuven. Results and Impact Working group on the Minimal Model Programme and degenerations of K3 surfaces. The participants are 6 PhD students and 2 postdocs from Imperial College London and KU Leuven. We have weekly online meetings where the members present different aspects of the theory, followed by group discussions. An explicit aim is to train PhD students and postdocs in specific techniques required for the project funded by the award.
