Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The main scientific findings will be reported by the parent grant PI (University of Huddersfield). The UKAEA contribution was mainly on toxic sample handling and preparation. However, the associated work highlighted key microstructural and micromechanical differences between the TiBe12 and CrBe12 alloys: resistance to fracture of the investigated CrBe12 samples should be significantly smaller than in the TiBe12 samples. The cracks in the Be12Ti alloy mainly follow grain boundaries i.e. intergranular fracture, cracks in the Be12Cr are mainly inside grains i.e. intragranular fracture.
Exploitation Route Selection of an optimal neutron multiplier material for fusion energy breeding blankets should take into account the observed better fracture resistance of the TiBe12 alloy compared to the CrBe12.

Description See also parent grant EP/T027193/1 for details The impact of the main scientific findings will be reported by the parent grant PI (University of Huddersfield). The UKAEA contribution into the project was mainly on toxic sample handling and preparation. Significant experience has been gained on safe handling of toxic beryllium containing alloys and miniaturised sample preparation for safe beryllium-containing material transport between the gran participants.

PI Contribution Some results of the project have been shared with the KIT partners.
Collaborator Contribution Unique BeTi and BeCr sample have been received from the German collaborators. KIT experts shared experience in sample preparation and TEM of beryllium-based materials.
Impact Fruitful collaborative relations with Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. Two UK-Germany meetings have been held to discuss the results of the project. One collaborative abstract is submitted to Symposium on Fusion Technology 2022.
