Extreme-scale precision Imaging in Radio Astronomy (EIRA)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Edinburgh Parallel Computing Centre

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description This award has contributed advanced methods for image reconstruction for domains such as radio astronomy and medical imaging, helping to significantly improve the quality and dynamic range of images produced from instructions such as radio telescopes and MRI machines. This means that much clearer images can be created, with finer details, enabling science, research, and other activities to benefit from higher quality images. We have also explored the computing approaches that can best support such activities, and have enabled significant improvements in data storage and access for these types of activities.
Exploitation Route Both the imaging approaches/algorithms, and the data storage approaches, are publicly available, either as software or as papers/reports, for others to use. In particular, the software implementations of these imaging approaches are open source and available for the community to benefit from.

Title Faceted-HyperSARA
Description Faceted-HyperSARA images radio-interferometric wideband intensity data. Written in MATLAB, the library offers a collection of utility functions and scripts from data extraction from an RI measurement set MS Table to the reconstruction of a wideband intensity image over the field of view and frequency range of interest. The code achieves high precision imaging from large data volumes and supports data dimensionality reduction via visibility gridding and estimation of the effective noise level when reliable noise estimates are not available. Faceted-HyperSASA also corrects the w-term via w-projection and incorporates available compact Fourier models of the direction dependent effects (DDEs) in the measurement operator.

Title Puri-Psi
Description Puri-Psi is an open-source package that implements programs used to undertake radio interferometric imaging. The Puri-Psi programs can use standard radio astronomy visibility and fits files, is implemented in C++ and utilises MPI and OpenMP for parallelisation. Puri-Psi uses the Psi library as an implementation of the optimisation algorithms and wavelet operators required to reconstruct images for radio astronomy.
