Abstract
The EPSRC Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP) supports excellent research and researchers across a broad range of subjects including Electronics, Physics, Chemistry, Civil/Chemical/Mechanical/Aerospace/ Environmental Engineering, Computing, Mathematics, Sociology and Psychology (www.surrey.ac.uk/research).
The University of Surrey's central Doctoral College currently supports around 1,200 postgraduate researchers (PGRs) studying for the degrees of PhD and EngD. We have ambitious plans to grow our population of postgraduate and early-career researchers through our Research and Innovation Strategy (www.surrey.ac.uk/research/research-and-innovation-strategy-2019-22). Postgraduate research opportunities are available from www.surrey.ac.uk/doctoral-college/prospective-postgraduate-researchers/fees-funding. Full time (30-48 Months), part time (60-96 Months) or collaborative options are available. The Doctoral College works collaboratively with faculties and departments/centres to offer a wide range of training and development opportunities. This not only support our PGRs to succeed in their doctorates, but also are prepares them for a wide variety of future careers. This career development involves employer engagement events as well as job shadowing and placements. Surrey has been shortlisted twice for the THE award for Best Support for Early Career Researchers. Our largest intake occurs in Autumn, however, there are opportunities to start doctoral study available throughout the year (Jan, April, July and Oct). Funded studentship opportunities are advertised on the University's website (jobs.surrey.ac.uk/) as well as subject-specific press. High calibre students can apply at any time by contacting the relevant research units (www.surrey.ac.uk/postgraduate/research). For general admission enquires, email admissions@surrey.ac.uk. Funding is normally provided for 36 months with the opportunity to apply for up to a 6-month extension. To compliment the high-quality research training experience, our DTPs have the following features.
Industrial collaboration pervades all aspects of work at Surrey. Over the last 5 years we have worked with more than 2,300 employers and are regularly in the top two Higher Education Institutions for graduate employability. We were pioneers in postgraduate training and championed the Engineering Doctorate. We emphasise the value of industrial collaboration offering collaborative PhD and CASE studentships. Doctoral Prizes provide the opportunity for high calibre scientists to start their academic careers following completion of a PhD. These are targeted at attracting talent to Surrey with a view to generating impact from their research. Potential candidates should contact FEPS-doctoralcollege@surrey.ac.uk.
Vacation Bursaries. DTP funding supports vacation bursaries available to budding new scientists during their undergraduate study. These bursaries provide a 10-week summer placement in a research intensive environment, offering a unique and challenging work experience. Interested students should contact a member of staff in a relevant subject area as applications need to be endorsed by a member of staff. While the majority of DTP funding is allocated to UK students, funding is available to support high calibre candidates from overseas. These studentships are highly competitive and selection is through alongside the Vice Chancellor's Award competition (https://www.surrey.ac.uk/fees-and-funding/studentships).
