Abstract

The UK National Ion Beam Centre provides ion beam time for a range of external users, using ion beams in a range of different ways. Uses range from implantation for doping semiconductor materials to change their electrical and optical properties to ion beam analysis of meteor impact on items recovered from space to determine the origin of space debris. The aim of this proposal is to upgrade the control system of one of the accelerators to increase its working life by another 20 years. At the same time this upgrade will help increase the level of automation possible on this system and increase the robustness of remote operation. A second piece of equipment in this proposal will increase the operational parameters of the ion implantation capability so that implantation and irradiation can be accomplished at even higher temperatures (1000C) which have some beneficial affects for implantation of SiC devices and can be used to explore what happens in nuclear reactor materials at these elevated temperatures during irradiation.
