High-temperature Electromagnetic Instrumentation for Metal Production

Lead Research Organisation: University of Warwick
Department Name: WMG

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The aim of the work has been to determine if electromagnetic sensors can be designed and operated within a furnace environment (for development of systems to monitor microstructure changes in steel due to annealing, tempering etc) and within a Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) system. Sensors have been designed by the University of Manchester for both these applications and initial results confirm that microstructural changes can be monitored. Further work is on-going to determine signal sensitivity to specific microstructure changes.
Exploitation Route Potential for commercial exploitation, for example sensors integrated in DSC machine, that could be taken by DSC manufacturers, depending on success of project.

Results and Impact The Transforming Foundation Industries Network+ has available funding for small projects of between 3 and 6 months duration. The TFIN+ is keen to attract applicants who are currently Post-Doctoral Researchers and who may wish to explore ideas that may have a transformative impact on the foundation industries (glass, metals, cements, ceramics, paper and bulk chemicals).

Frank Zhou gave a talk sharing experience on early career researchers apply for a small funding. How low TRL level research can benefit the Foundation Industries
