Description The award allowed researchers in mathematics to develop novel statistical methods tailored to tackle topical, intricate problems in astrophysics. For example, we finalized a new method to correct for bias in weak lensing applications, crucial for reliable estimation of cosmological parameters, e.g., the clustering strength of dark matter. We have developed a mathematical framework for the principled spectral analysis in high-energy astrophysics when detectors are subject to energy pile-up. Another line of research enhanced previously developed methodology to account for incompleteness in estimation of galaxy population distributions. Most astronomical surveys are incomplete in the faint end of the astronomical source population, e.g., due to telescope sensitivity limitations. Such incompleteness corrections are thus crucial when inferring population properties. In a new line of research, we have developed a research plan and proof of concept to improve statistical learning methods in cases when the training data set is not representative for the test/target data. Such methodology will have many applications in a variety of scientific areas.

Polymer melts have been found to exhibit slip at their interfaces, some sort of sliding on one-another. Earlier research has shown that this phenomenon has a destabilising effect on two-layer Couette flows by consideration of both linear and non-linear techniques. However, Couette flow appears to be mostly a toy model to understand the complicated physics of the phenomena. This grant funded work to derive the corresponding equations for flow configurations that are more relevant to the applications, i.e. pressure-driven flows. The exploration of the dynamics of the toy model is also continued to provide more insights into the fundamental physics of these phenomena.

A separate line of work contributes to calculus that operates on functionals on path space and the reformulation of fundamental concepts and theorems in mathematical finance, purely analytically without using probability.

Finally, researchers have investigated rare transitions in quantum systems influenced by noise, by adapting widely used transition path sampling concepts from classical molecular dynamics to a quantum setting. These methods are applicable to a broad range of systems governed by similar equations, offering new insights into quantum dynamics.
Exploitation Route The methodology for the statistical correction of bias corrections in weak lensing analysis is readily applicable and might in fact improve the general pipeline for weak lensing cosmological parameter estimation, potentially mitigating or affirming current discrepancies with alternative approaches for cosmological parameter estimation. Research on new methods for incompleteness corrections in astrophysics will impact new to estimates of galaxy population distributions, potentially gaining new understanding of the geometry of the universe. The developed methodology for bias corrections in statistical learning are expected to have various applications, e.g., one plan is to apply such methodology to improve the estimation of black hole masses via large photometric and spectroscopic data sets.

When completed, our work on Couette flow, will enable researchers to use our new models and the parameter ranges to design a process involving polymer melts, e.g. coatings, lens production, oil transportation etc. They could adapt the geometry to the specific application and tune the working conditions appropriately in order to avoid or encourage the slip-induced instabilities. The former case will be more relevant to applications where the stratification needs to be preserved (e.g. optical element coatings), whilst the instability might be desirable if some kind of mixing is the goal.

Our works has laid down the foundation for further study of problems in mathematical finance such as hedging and portfolio allocation. In particular, this provides a short cut into mathematical finance at the introductory level without the usual prerequisites such as measure theory and stochastic processes

Finally, our research on rare transitions in quantum systems influenced by noise contributes to a deeper understanding of dissipative quantum tunneling. By introducing a refined model for quantum Brownian motion, future research can further explore quantum system dynamics in more complex systems
