Results and Impact | The World Materials Forum is an initiative founded in 2015 in France in order to decouple economic growth and materials consumption, while creating value for industry. The aims include using materials smarter, using them less and for longer, and developing breakthrough technologies and new business models. The event comprised three focused small-group discussion sessions between senior decision-makers, involving company CEOs, academics and entrepreneurs. 2020's three topics were: decarbonising bulk materials (with focus on steel and glass); stationary batteries for storage performance; and energy efficient electronics. The event held in Cambridge included an academic and business delegation from France, along with the CEO's of CRU, Polysolar, Nyobolt; deputies for the CEO's of Tata and E.ON; CTO's of NSG Pilkington, the Materials Processing Institute, and Paragraf; as well as other UK based researchers and companies. Royce@Cambridge helped facilitate this event, with Royce researchers taking part in the discussion sessions and the attendees given tours of the Royce facilities in West Cambridge along with an introduction to the research work being completed on Royce equipment and the wider aims of the UK Royce Institute. |

Results and Impact | The Royce Institute Hub Building hosted the First UK Workshop on High-Entropy Materials on Friday 9th September 2022. The workshop aimed to (i) identify and establish a UK community on high-entropy materials, (ii) create an inclusive forum for sharing ideas, (iii) enable greater networking and formation of new partnerships, especially between industry and academia, and (iv) highlight areas of challenge and opportunity in the field. The day comprised a mixture of short 10-minute talks from academics and industry, complemented by 2-minute 'elevator pitches' from early-career researchers (PDRAs and PhDs). Those submitting abstracts for 10-minute talks were asked to focus on one of three areas: (i) challenges, (ii) opportunities, or (iii) new ideas and methods of interest to the whole community. In total, over 40 people attended in-person, with a further 40 participating via Zoom (the hybrid format was very successful). x14 different UK universities were represented, alongside participants from x5 companies and representatives from STFC and a Catapult. There were also a few international participants online (although the principal focus was the UK community). Presentations covered a range of topics, including: high-throughput manufacture and screening of alloys, opportunities associated with functional high-entropy nanomaterials, and the challenges presented by sustainability considerations. Discussions were both lively and fruitful (regularly having to be cut short owing to time), and highlighted a number of opportunities for concerted action, including: better standardisation of data reported for new high-entropy materials (to allow for better comparisons), and the need for improved thermodynamic data. Further focussed discussions are already being planned between academics and industry, in anticipation of applying for UKRI funding. Prizes for the best elevator pitches were sponsored by two industry partners - Qinetiq and Metalysis Ltd. The workshop was organised by Ed Pickering (Manchester, AMP RAL), Kathy Christofidou (Sheffield, AMP TPL) and Nick Jones (Cambridge), with assistance from the Royce Hub team. |

The MPs will seek to understand how the UK might move closer in its use of plastic to a 'circular economy' where resources are used and then brought back into use, as opposed to the 'take, make and dispose' model which is currently consuming the earth's resources at an unsustainable rate. |

During this meeting, we will also be celebrating the 75th anniversary of the founding of the EM(A)G as an IOP group. This section of the event will be held at the Institute of Physics headquarters. The meeting will focus on multidimensional electron microscopy research. Distinguished invited speakers will present recent advances in multidimensional electron microscopy research, alongside contributed oral presentations, flash talks and poster sessions. EMAG conferences are valued in particular for providing a platform for students to present their work, alongside more established researchers, in a friendly and supportive atmosphere. A table-top trade exhibition will also be held for delegates to explore the latest advances in electron microscopy instrumentation and software. On the 7th of July, EMAG2022 meeting will be immediately followed up a 'town hall' style meeting jointly organized by EMAG, Royal Microscopy Society, SuperSTEM Facility at Daresbury and ePSIC Facility at Diamond. Immediately after hearing the current development in the UK in EMAG2022, the short 'town hall meeting is ideally position to kick start the consultation for a refresh of the UK EM roadmap for electron microscopy in the physical science (see details).' |

Results and Impact | On 25th May, Royce Cambridge in Partnership with the Institute of Physics (IOP) held a webinar on the subject of stabilizing organic transistors in water for bioelectronic applications. Organic bioelectronics is an emerging field - whereby organic materials seem ideal candidates for bioelectronics due to their softness, biocompatibility, stretchability, and their ability to conduct both electrons and ions. Dr Dimitrios Simatos outlined important research which used an additives-based approach to stabilize Organic Field E?ect Transistor (OFETs) immersed in Deionized (DI) water and saline solution, for periods up to a month, making the first high-performance water-stable OFETs reported in the literature. Dr Simatos received his PhD degree in Physics from the University of Cambridge, in 2022 and is currently a post-doctoral research associate at the University. His current research interests include wearables, implantable electronics, and the integration of organic and inorganic materials within the same device (hybrid systems). |
