Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The research describes how electrons are accelerated at collisionless shock waves. The main result demonstrates that at low Mach number magnetised collisionless shock an electric field develops at the front of the shock wave. This electric field reflects ions that generate plasma turbulence. The turbulence accelerates the electrons to high energy. The research can explain the role collisionless shock waves play in fusion plasmas as well as astrophysical plasmas.
Exploitation Route Collisionless shock waves are important in plasma physics. They can be used to compress material to high densities and temperatures such as those found in inertial fusion devices and theta and z-pinch devices.

Description Please see the impact description provided for EP/N013379/1' where you are asked 'How have your findings been used?. This has opened a new avenue to pursue laboratory astrophysics experiments and understand the role of shock waves in possible applications to laser fusion. In particular ion acceleration by shock waves.
