Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Title | British crime survey 2007-2008 : teaching dataset |
Description | The British Crime Survey 2007-2008: Teaching Dataset is based on the British Crime Survey, 2007-2008 (available from the UK Data Archive under SN 6066) and constitutes real data which are used by the Home Office and are behind many headlines. The teaching dataset is a subset, which has been subjected to certain simplifications and additions for the purpose of learning and teaching. The main differences are: •only respondents who completed Module B (attitudes to the Criminal Justice System) of the BCS, 2007-2008 are included •the number of variables has been reduced •weighting has been simplified •a reduced codebook is provided •additional continuous variables have been created (using factor analysis of pre-existing variables) in order to facilitate their use in quantitative methods classes. Main Topics: The main topics covered are: experience of crime, perceptions of crime, characteristics of local area, attitudes to police and Criminal Justice System, socio-demographics. |

Form Of Engagement Activity | Participation in an activity, workshop or similar |
Part Of Official Scheme? | No |
Primary Audience | |
Results and Impact | Our roles as consumers and our patterns of consumption are central to who we are, what we do and our consumer society. ESDS surveys allow researchers to look at many different areas of consumption, for example, health and consumption (lifestyle factors such as eating, drinking, smoking, exercise) and environmental consumption (the products we consume and our choices of transportation). This introductory seminar is aimed at those with little or no experience of microdata from government surveys, or those with some experience of these surveys who require an introduction to the consumption content of the datasets. |

Results and Impact | The focus of this two day workshop is on multilevel modelling where the multilevel structure is determined by the sample design,in particular on the way the methods can be applied to the Health Survey for England. This structure will then be used to examine the extent to which variables such as height, weight and BMI are clustered by household and area and whether any of this variability can be accounted by background variables such as social class and educational qualifications. |

Results and Impact | A data manipulation workshop, designed for users of the government surveys which allow for analyses at different levels (for example, household and individual) or which have a complex structure (where the data is held in a number of separate linkable datasets or 'tables'). It provided participants with an opportunity to hear about and discuss issues relating to data manipulation with such datasets, as well as hands-on experience. |
