Results and Impact | Oral presentation delivered at the Older People and Ageing Research Network (OPAN) Seminar Series at Swansea University. The Bangladeshis are one of the recently migrated, major immigrant communities in the UK. As in the general population, nutrition plays a crucial role in the health status of the Bangladeshi population, who have poorer self-reported and measured health status indicated by higher rates of centralised obesity and chronic diseases, e.g. type 2 diabetes. Little is known about how eating patterns and migration affect Bangladeshi women's nutritional status and experiences of ageing. Project MINA explored Bangladeshi women's nutritional status, food practices and experiences of ageing in Cardiff and Bangladesh. A participatory approach was taken involving community researchers and mixed methods were used. Some findings include: Frequency of consumption of savoury snacks and sweet foods was significantly higher in those born in the UK. Very low physical function was common in the Cardiff mothers due to sedentary lifestyles. The majority of mothers and daughters living in Cardiff expect to remain in the UK and some expressed concerns about their future care needs as family structures are changing and not all had adult children living nearby. None to report |

Results and Impact | The Bangladeshi population in the UK is one of the fastest growing ethnic groups and amongst the most socially disadvantaged. They have poorer health status and higher rates of diseases such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Older Bangladeshi women are particularly affected as they play a lead role in caretaking for multiple generations within relatively large extended families and many struggle to cope with ageing, poverty, racism, and social exclusion. There is no clear understanding of how eating patterns and migration affect the nutritional status and experiences of ageing in this group. |
