Transitions in Kitchen Living

Department Name: Faculty of Health & Social Care

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The research has shown how in later life people draw upon life course experience of person-environment interaction to maintain their well-being. The kitchen has been seen as an important domestic space that enables people to remain 'staying put' within their own home as they age. However, the design of the kitchen to date has not taken onboard the needs of people as their health and wellbeing changes. There are issues relating to vision, reaching, dexterity and hearing that need to be taken on board in the doemstic space.
Exploitation Route There are several groups that can use the findings from this study:
kitchen designers
retail sector
older people - developing coping skills
building regulations
Sectors Communities and Social Services/Policy,Construction,Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software),Education,Electronics,Energy,Environment,Healthcare,Leisure Activities, including Sports, Recreation and Tourism,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology,Culture, Heritage, Museums and Collections,Retail

Description Our findings have been used to discuss the impact of an ageing society on the future design of mainstream and supportive housing. We are beginning to see some examples of age-inclusive design in supportive housing. Discussions with the retail sector continue. However there is still ageism in terns of the market for new kitchen designs which are targeted at 20-60 years olds. The team is integrating the findigns into teaching both in social gerontology, design and ergonomics.

Results and Impact 'My Home Life' is the national programme of work that seeks to review the literature concerning good practice in care homes and to develop training.

The NDA programme ran a joint event with the 'My Home Life' programme. The 'TiKL' project has involved participants living in 'mainstream' and 'supportive housing' but not care homes as residents do not ususally have access to an independent kitchen. However, this presentation considered data from the 'TiKL' project for people living alone and then considered the experience of people living communally and eating collectively.

Results and Impact BSA Food Study Group London Seminar Series

The focus in this paper is the oral history data which following group thematic analysis derived seven main themes: space, equipment, tasks, storage, social etiquette and meanings. Issues raised in these narratives will be used to address the conference themes - 'foodwork' and 'foodspaces', 'cooking and identity' - demonstrating issues of continuity, sustainability and change in kitchen living. The life of one participant, aged 88 years, is given to demonstrate these themes.

After my talk researcher funded by the Food Studies Organisation liaised with the team to consider our methodology
