EDICa - Equality Diversity and Inclusion Caucus
Lead Research Organisation:
Heriot-Watt University
Department Name: Sch of Social Sciences
Abstract
To achieve global excellence in research and innovation, the research workforce must bring a diversity of experiences, expertise and ideas which necessitates the change of the cultures and structures which exclude marginalised researchers in order to meet UKRI's UK-wide talent programme. Our vision for the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Caucus (EDICa) is to advance the creation of inclusive research cultures enabling diverse researchers to access and thrive in careers across the research and innovation (R&I) systems. EDICa will advance understanding of the lived experiences of marginalized researchers, creating the hope and possibility of a research career for those traditionally excluded while imagining a different research world which embeds equity. Working across three workstreams: 1. the career and life cycle, 2. the research process and 3 the organisation of work, EDICa will undertake and lead a programme of research to advance EDI across the R&I systems. EDICa will synthesise evidence to identify gaps in existing understanding and EDI practice and areas in need of urgent research. We will also commission research via a flexible fund which will address gaps identified in the evidence reviews and conduct our own programme of research to advance EDI literacy, enabling workplaces and the inclusion of researchers living with menstrual disorders. In addition, EDICa will commission research projects across the three workstreams through the management of a flexible fund, with applications from those with lived experience of marginalisation and early career researchers particularly welcomed. Co-design with marginalised researchers and wider key stakeholders is at the heart of all of EDICa's activities. By working with stakeholder engagement groups, EDICa will create communities of practice who will not only shape the work of EDICa (including dissemination) but will also create a legacy of increased EDI literacy and capabilities across the R&I systems. EDICa will co-design, with key stakeholders, an online tool of training materials, evidence bases, best practice, and interactive multimedia. This tool, Equity in Research and Innovation Careers (ERICa) will be co-designed iteratively throughout the three year funding period, culminating in a formal launch in 2025.

Results and Impact | EDICa's workstream on the career lifecycle focuses on the gap in research on menstrual health - this includes normal and problematic menstruation and (peri)menopause. In this seminar EDICa postdoctoral research associate Chiara Cocco shares initial findings from our evidence review and 50+ interviews of people with lived experience. Ellie Honan - polar scientist and PhD researcher in snow petrel movement and diet, Vice President of UK Polar Network -shared her work on raising awareness and understanding in this area. See BBC article on her tackling of taboo periods. Dharma Reyes Macaya - Senior Technician in palaeoceanography and biogeochemistry in the Lyell Centre for Earth & Marine Science & Technology and PhD researcher at MARUM, University of Bremen, Germany - shares her experience of menstruation and conducting fieldwork on research ships. Ashmika Motee, PhD researcher, explains her research on problematic menstruation and remote work environments. Juliet Nwafor, PhD researcher, introduces her research on menstruation in the banking sector of Nigeria. And Gabriella Goodrich, PhD researcher, shares her research project on menstrual health in the hospitality sector. |

Results and Impact | Cardiff University were proud hosts of the first GW4 EDI STEMM conference, which aimed to bring together colleagues from the GW4 Universities, and beyond, to discuss systemic barriers within STEMM, share best practice andidentify future actions the GW4 EDI STEMM Hub can take to remove these barriers. The keynote presentation was from James Richards (Herriot Watt University, EDI Caucus) who informed the meeting about the UKRI and British Academy funded Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Caucus (EDICa). The purposes of EDICa are to create inclusive research and innovation cultures and enable diverse researchers to thrive in their careers, under the 3 main workstreams of Career Lifecycle (Workstream 1), Research Process (Workstream 2) and Organisation of Work (Workstream 3). Colleagues are invited to get involved by joining stakeholder engagement groups. |

Results and Impact | Karen Grayson from the Royal Academy of Engineering presented the Diversity & Inclusion Progression Framework (link here), and Sarah Higginson from the Centre for Research into Energy Demand Solutions presented the EDI Cube (link here). Both are tools for assessing and implementing change in equality, diversity & inclusion in research. Dr Clay Magill, Associate Professor in Geochemistry at the Lyell Centre for Earth & Marine Science & Technology, and EDICa Lead on Neurodiversity, chaired the discussion. |
