Auditory disability and spatial hearing

Lead Research Organisation: MRC Institute of Hearing Research

Abstract

We study what a hearing loss means for someone and what benefits hearing aids can offer, especially in the domains of quality of life, spatial perception and speech intelligibility.

About one in six UK adults has an auditory disability, rising to one in two for those over 75. A hearing loss can lead to difficulties in social communication, from missing family conversations to misunderstanding people at work, and can also lead to wider problems, such as social withdrawal and depression. Hearing aids are excellent at improving audibility, but offer only limited improvements in understanding speech in noisy situations. They do little for the sense of direction of sounds.

Many of our experiments look at the effects of hearing impairment, hearing aids, and clinical management on health and well-being. We also develop novel, state-of-the-art experimental methods, such as using real-time motion-tracking to dynamically move a sound in response to head movements or measuring continuous speech identification.

Technical Summary

One in six UK adults has an auditory disability, rising to one in two over 75. A better understanding of the problems caused by hearing loss is therefore crucial for better public health. This goal underpins the fundamental question defining our research: what does a hearing loss mean for an individual?

We are investigating this question by studying how hearing losses in older adults affect their quality of life and their auditory perception.

In the domain of speech perception we have (1) demonstrated that speech identification via simulated wireless technology in hearing aids is only susceptible to processing delays at surprisingly large values; (2) determined the factors that affect the slope of the psychometric function for speech; (3) calculated the distribution of speech reception thresholds in the UK population; (4) developed a new test of continuous speech that realistically represents everyday life, and has the potential to be sensitive to listening effort; (5) determined the effects of experience on the sensitivity and specificity of a popular clinical/primary-care test of hearing, the Whispered Voice Test; (6) measured the just-noticeable-difference in signal-to-noise ratio; (7) started exploring the “just clinical difference”

In the domain of spatial perception, our work is studying how people perceive the auditory world in realistic dynamic situations. We have (1) demonstrated that hearing-impaired listeners are poor at ignoring reflected sound when locating sound sources; (2) shown that hearing aids have an effect on the overall scale of the perceived auditory world; (3) developed new motion-tracking paradigms and made a real-time interface that allows us to dynamically move a sound in response to head movements; (4) discovered that the perceived width of sound under hearing impairment does not follow the predictions of standard theories; (5) measured the speed at which people adapt to the reverberation of rooms; (6) done a meta-analysis of the data on directional acuity in hearing impairment, with and without hearing aids; (7) developed algorithms for resolving front-back confusions in hearing aids.

In other work we have (1) run a public-science experiment, asking if a lifetime of loud music is linked to hearing loss; (2) developed a database of all hearing questionnaires; (3) helped develop an entirely novel assistive-listening system, using wifi instead of an induction loop to transmit the signals.

Our ongoing and future work is extending all of these results.
