Loose B (2016) Estimating the recharge properties of the deep ocean using noble gases and helium isotopes in Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans

 
Description The distribution of noble gases and helium isotopes in the dense shelf waters of Antarctica reflects the boundary conditions near the ocean surface: air-sea exchange, sea ice formation, and subsurface ice melt. Our results indicate glacial melt has a non negligible impact on the atmospheric gas content of Antarctic Bottom Water.
Exploitation Route The input of fluids from hydrothermal vents can be traced with 3He/4He. These fluids provide micronutrients that promote biological activity and result in atmosphere carbon dioxide drawdown into the ocean system.
