NEC06279 Establishing the market and technical strategy for a UV-VIS Micro-FFTS spectrometer for measuring Dissolved organic carbon

Lead Research Organisation: NERC CEH (Up to 30.11.2019)
Department Name: Soils and Land Use (Lancaster)

Abstract

Project Objectives
In this pathfinder project we will employ Qi3 to undertake a full market assessment of the MicroFTS instrument.

QI3 will be employed to:

1) Map market drivers for adoption and routes to market for MicroFTS in the water and environmental sectors.
2) Identify the size of the potential DOC instrumentation market in the UK / globally, and the potential value proposition of MicroFTS.
3) Develop viable business models and market strategies for commercial exploitation

This will be achieved by working closely with Qi3.
CEH will manage the project, and will discuss the needs of the team at regular intervals through the course of the project.

Impact
There are several routes we could take to full commercialisation of the instrument. Through this porject, we will hope to eliminate poor routes, and identify strong options for commercial development of the product.
By identifying an optimal strategy, it will help focus our effort on defining the final footprint of the instrument. Identifying a commercial partner through the course of this research will also bring the instrument to market more quickly. This will form the basis of our follow on fund application. The market research will also help better inform the range of end users. Currently we have been working with the Utility companies and the Environment Agency who measure DOC using wet chemistry techniques. We believe there are other markets available, but these are ill defined or not yet understood. We would hope that Qi3 will provide this information, which will better inform the final design of the instrument. These refinements can be incorporated into any future proposals such as the follow on fund application.

Planned Impact

Benefits

An initial assessment of the market opportunities for MicroFTS will be conducted, and this will assist the follow on project in taking the best route to market for the MicroFTS in the water and environmental sectors. The size of the potential DOC instrumentation market has yet to be ascertained, and at the moment we can only estimate the opotential pool of end users. The UK and global market could be considerable, and may exist in other sectors, other than environmental markets.

By examining the recommendations on business model and commercialisation plan generated by Qi3, we will avoid taking unnecessary risks, and hopefully eliminate some dead end routes that could have been avoided.

Outcomes

The primary outcome will be a better informed proposal for the follow on fund, and a more focused strategy towards taking the instrument towards it's final footprint and design. This informed approach will hopefully lead to better adoption of the technology, as the final approach should make for a better and more attractive instrument design.

Description Through this research we have developed a market strategy and have identified potential customers and co-workers to further develop and market the UV - spectrometer. This will be enabling for the STFC funded spectrometer, dispute this future funding was not provided by NERC.
Exploitation Route We put forward a project proposal to the NERC for follow on funding, but it was not funded.
