Abstract
The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) studies processes occurring at the poles which affect our climate, oceans, atmospheric circulation and sea level. We develop satellite observations of land and sea ice, combining them with numerical models to explain how Earth's ice, oceans and atmosphere interact and to predict how they will evolve.
Combining data and models has allowed us, for example, to improve seasonal forecasts of sea ice and projections of ice sheet evolution, and to explain key signals of climate change such as dynamical imbalance of the Pine Island Glacier, stability of the Larsen Ice Shelf, controls on Greenland glacier dynamics, variability in Arctic sea ice thickness, and variability in the Arctic and Southern Oceans.
We lead international efforts to quantify sea level rise due to the polar ice sheets, and to predict their future contributions, we partner with space agencies to provide scientific
leadership for polar satellite missions, we produce and distribute unique and widely-used records of Earth's sea ice and ice sheet thickness, and we support the land ice and sea ice
elements of the UK Earth System Model.
Our activities are internationally outstanding, decadal in scale, and closely aligned with BAS's science priorities. Together with BAS, our work addresses NERC's core strategy to observe, monitor and predict the behaviour of the Earth and its environment over long periods and across large scales.

Planned Impact
CPOM provides scientific advice and support to UK governmental and public-sector bodies. For example we have acted as expert witnesses to the UK Parliament Environment Audit Committee, the House of Lords Committee on the Arctic, and the House of Commons All Party Parliamentary Group on the Polar Regions, and we contribute towards Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology briefing notes.
We have represented the European Space Agency at UNFCC Conferences of the Parties and have co-authored their 2010 and 2015 Earth Observation Science Strategies. We have acted as lead authors on all recent IPCC Assessments - including AR5, AR6, and the Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5 degrees C - and we sit on the steering committees of the WCRP's Grand Challenge on Sea-Level Rise and its Ice Sheet Model Inter-comparison for CMIP6.
Through leadership of the IMBIE, we coordinate the international community assessment of the ice sheet contribution to global sea level rise on behalf of ESA and NASA, adopted as a climate indicator by the European Environment Agency and the US Environment Protection Agency. We have formal roles as advisors to NERC, the UK Space Agency, ESA, and the European Commission (EC) on issues related to Earth Observation satellite technology and their applications - including CryoSat-2, Sentinel-3 and the CRISTAL candidate polar mission. We also regularly partner with and advise the UK space sector, supporting economic growth in satellite technologies - a key strand of the UK industrial strategy.
Within the scientific community, our work is at the heart of major scientific discoveries, including dynamical imbalance of the Pine Island Glacier, stability of the Larsen Ice Shelf, controls on Greenland land terminating and marine-terminating glacier dynamics, variability in Arctic sea ice thickness, variability in Arctic and Southern Ocean water storage, and hydraulic connections between Antarctic subglacial lakes.
We have led the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE) since 2011, delivering the first community assessments of the sea level contribution due to Antarctica and Greenland, and we lead the ISMIP6 ice sheet model inter-comparison experiments for CMIP6. Since 2000, we have published over 250 papers, 25 of which have appeared in Science or Nature, with a further 28 reported in Geophysical Research Letters. Our papers currently attract over 2000 citations per year, and 25 attract over 25 citations per year.
As above, we conceived and act as Principal Scientific Advisor to the ESA CryoSat mission, we are a Science Leader for the EC Sentinel-3 mission, and we are members of the advisory board for the ESA/EC CRISTAL, SKIM, and STEREOID candidate satellite missions.
In terms of numerical models, we created the GLIMMER community ice sheet model in 2002, we created the BISICLES high-performance adaptive ice sheet model in partnership with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in 2010, we created the CPOM-CICE advanced physics community sea ice model in 2004, and we are supporting the inclusions of cryosphere models within UKESM.
All of this activity will continue during the current phase of CPOM, delivering further impact from our research.

Title | Two Inflatable Ice Cubes - one piece and the second layered separate structures |
Description | Two inflatable cubes were developed along with ESA to demonstrate the current ice loss. The cubes were used as props at COP26 in Glasgow. |
Type Of Art | Artistic/Creative Exhibition |
Year Produced | 2021 |
Impact | The products were eye catching and demonstrated the ice loss in a visual manner which attracted people to the stand. The inflatables can be reused and were recyclable. |
Description | During the course of this award, CPOM has pioneered methods for tracking key cryosphere parameters using satellite data - including measuring the extent, thickness and drift of sea ice, and the thickness, flow, mass and grounded extent of land ice - and the use of these observations to improve our understanding of present and future environmental change, through our state of the art numerical models. We make these data and models freely available to the scientific community, and they are widely used within the UK and beyond (see below), with collaborations focusing on glaciologists, oceanographers and atmospheric scientists. Notably: - We produce and distribute near real time sea ice thickness measurements as a support to science. - Our ice sheet data systems generate measurements of Greenland and Antarctic ice sheet elevation and velocity change. These support higher level products including DEMs, plus measurements of grounding line migration, iceberg calving, and ice sheet contribution to sea level rise. We also provide the world's first near real time glacier monitoring service. - We play a leading role in national and international sea ice (CPOM-CICE) and land ice (BISICLES) model development. BISICLES simulations have been included in each of the major model intercomparison projects which inform IPCC assessments. - We have leadership roles within the ESA CCI and C3S services, as well as providing science leadership for ESA's CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 missions, and advice on the CRISTAL, SKIM and STEREOID candidate missions. - We coordinate community inter-comparisons of satellite retrieval algorithms. - We established the UK Sea Ice Group through which national advances in sea ice research are shared. Some specific findings made during the course of this award are set out below: Sea Ice Earth Observation - PhD researcher Anne Braakman-Folgmann's (University of Leeds) study found that the A68 Antactic iceberg released more than 152 billion tonnes of fresh water as it melted around the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia. Sea Ice Modelling - CPOM's Professor Daniel Feltham (University of Reading) contributed to a study on the mechanisms of Arctic and Antarctic sea ice response to ocean heat transport Land Ice Earth Observation - A study led by CPOM scientist Tom Slater (University of Leeds) used satellite data to detect ice sheet runoff from Greenland. The findings, published in Nature Communications, reveal that Greenland's meltwater runoff has risen by 21% over the past four decades and has become 60% more erratic from one summer to the next. Land Ice Modelling - CPOM Professor Tony Payne (University of Bristol) led a study predicting that any sea-level rise in Antarctica will be countered by an increase in snowfall associated with a warmer Polar atmosphere. Using modern methods to calculate projected changes to sea-levels, researchers discovered that the two ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica respond differently reflecting their distinct local climates. |
Exploitation Route | As above, we make our satellite data records and numerical models freely available to the scientific community, and they are widely used within the UK and beyond. Our engagement strategy is focussed in three areas; we maintain collaborations with glaciologists, oceanographers, and atmospheric scientists to make use of in situ measurements for verification of our satellite products, we work closely with space agencies to develop and improve satellite retrievals, sensors, and missions, and we coordinate and participate in a range of community activities on polar observations and modelling to ensure that our collective efforts address key scientific challenges. This includes using our expertise to provide scientific leadership for current (CryoSat-2) and candidate (SKIM, CRISTAL, STEREOID) missions. CPOM also provide data to the Met Office to assimilate into their modelling. |

Description | A glacier in West Antarctica has been formally named after the city of Glasgow to mark its hosting of the COP26 climate change conference. The Scottish city will welcome more than 100 world leaders to COP26, the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of Parties, from this weekend until Friday 12 November. The conference marks a key moment in human history for our response to climate change, especially given the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Glasgow Glacier is one of nine areas of fast flowing ice in the Getz basin to be named after locations of major climate treaties, conferences and reports, following a request by University of Leeds scientists. CPOM PhD Researcher Heather Selley, from Leeds' School of Earth and Environment, and an Enrichment Student at the Alan Turing Institute, identified 14 glaciers in the Getz basin of West Antarctica that are thinning and flowing more quickly into the ocean.Boris Johnson announces Antarctic glacier to be named after Glasgow in honour of COP26. The Prime Minister said the 'glittering giant of nature' was a 'stark reminder of what we are working to preserve'.31 Oct 2021 |

Title | Optimal Interpolation: CS2S3 daily pan-Arctic radar freeboards |
Description | This repository contains a quick-look data set of daily pan-Arctic radar freeboard and uncertainty estimates for the winter 2018-2019 season. These data were generated using the methodology outlined in "A Bayesian approach towards daily pan-Arctic sea ice freeboard estimates from combined CryoSat-2 and Sentinel-3 (CS2S3) satellite observations", by Gregory et al. 2021. The quick-look product is derived by pre-scribing hyperparameters before generating the predictions (see main article). |

Title | Sea Ice Extent Forecasting |
Description | This repository contains Python code to generate probabilistic seasonal forecasts of regional and pan-Arctic September sea ice extent, in line with the Sea Ice Prediction Network's annual calls for submissions (Pan-Arctic and Alaskan seas). Each python script can be executed on the first day of June, July, August, or September each year, where it will subsequently download the relevant data and generate pan-Arctic and Alaska predictions of the following September sea ice extents for the current year. Furthermore, the retrospective forecast scripts can also be executed to generate forecasts over a range of past years (the user will be prompted in the terminal which years are to be forecast). The same scripts for forecasting Antarctic summer (February) sea ice (Pan-Antarctic, Ross and Weddell seas), are also available. The method is based on Complex Networks and Gaussian Process Regression, as outlined in the article by Gregory et al., 2020 |

Carbon Brief's science writer Daisy Dunne joined the expedition for its first six weeks in the autumn of 2019. This is the first of four articles focused on MOSAiC research. |

Results and Impact | ON BOARD THE AKADEMIK FEDOROV, Barents Sea - Michel Tsamados has studied sea ice for nearly a decade, but until this week he'd never seen it in person. A physicist at University College London, Tsamados conducts most of his work using satellite data, studying the remote Arctic from afar. That changed late Wednesday night, when the 38-year-old researcher finally witnessed, up close, the focus of his life's work. Standing on the deck of Russian research vessel Akademik Fedorov, cruising through the Arctic Ocean around 81 degrees latitude, he watched a small, gray blob drift into focus. It was his first ice floe. |

Results and Impact | Interview in The Voyage to the End of Ice Arctic ice is disappearing - the question is how fast. Summer sea ice could endure 100 more years, or it could vanish later this decade, with disastrous consequences for the rest of the planet. To nail down the answer, an expedition to the top of the world has to untangle the knotty physics of ice. |

Results and Impact | A new study, led by CPOM's Professor Tony Payne (University of Bristol) predicts that any sea level rise in the world's most southern continent will be countered by an increase in snowfall, associated with a warmer Polar atmosphere. Using modern methods to calculate projected changes to sea levels, researchers discovered that the two ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica respond differently, reflecting their very distinct local climates. |
