| Description | Activities undertaken Collection of samples and laboratory assessments of microplastics in commercially important species across diverse locations in Peru Findings High contamination in marine species and aquaculture feeds, posing risks to seafood safety. Microplastic fibers dominate pollution, primarily from fishing gear, textiles, and paper degradation. Gills in crabs show higher microplastic retention, suggesting respiratory exposure is a critical pathway. Reducing polyester, nylon, and modified cellulose pollution could help mitigate contamination. |
| Exploitation Route | Key Recommendations for Addressing Plastic Pollution in the Galápagos Strengthen Regulations & Policy Measures Reduce Plastic Emissions from Tourism & Fishing Enhance Scientific Monitoring & Data Collection Target the fibres to reduce microplastic contamination on commercially important species Recommendations to implement circular economy models in the region Recommendations to reduce the use of single use plastics in urban zones |
