BGS Geoscience to tackle global environmental challenges

Lead Research Organisation: British Geological Survey
Department Name: BGS Global

Abstract

Global environmental challenges will be the focus of BGS' research, specifically: strengthening adaptation and resilience to geological hazards and climate change; security and sustainability of resource supply chains; and reduction in risk to urban and rural infrastructure. These are highly complex interconnected issues, all underpinned by the geosciences, and with an international collaborative approach the proposed research can play a role in tackling them.

Our programme will be organised and managed around three interlinked Research and Innovation Challenges (RICs) representing the global environmental challenges above:

RIC 1: Living in multi-hazard environments

RIC 2: Resources for the future

RIC 3: Land use change

Key to success is research co-designed and delivered via equitable partnerships established from both the ODA-NC programme and wider BGS international network of projects. Broadening the international scope enables us to employ UK research expertise in partnerships that best demonstrate the potential to translate research outcomes to additional global settings (Geoscientific knowledge as a Global Public Good). To facilitate this translation and to build-in opportunities for inter-connectivity of projects across the programme, we have framed the RICs to work in three key contexts to realise maximum benefit: (1) The urbanising world, representing areas experiencing rapid urbanisation, (2) Resource research emerging economies, representing countries essential to the global supply chain for minerals, energy and food, and (3) Communities on the climate change frontline, where effects will be most impactful or represent scenarios translatable to other parts of the world.

BGS has extensive experience in geological multi-hazards research and support for national emergency response organisations. In RIC 1 we will (a) develop new methods for characterising, monitoring and forecasting hazards, both natural and anthropogenic, (b) undertake research into hazards and their impacts in multi-hazard locations including Indonesia, the Philippines and the UK Overseas Territories, and (c) investigate how geoscience knowledge and expertise supports disaster preparedness, response and recovery worldwide and how this can be improved.

Geoscience is key to ensuring the sustainable supply of raw materials required to reach net zero, to continue global economic and social development and, along with the supply of food and water resources, to sustain and promote equitable development. Our RIC 2 research will focus on sub-Saharan Africa, the Li-Triangle in South America, and the Philippines. It will: (a) leverage BGS expertise in global raw material supply chain/circular economy research in critical and energy transition raw materials, raw materials for rapid urbanisation and trade-offs associated with mineral waste, (b) develop the geological model structures to facilitate the development of geothermal energy in LMICs, and requirements for sub-surface storage of CO2, and (c) inform strategies for the sustainable use of biophysical resources for food production and utilisation of water resources, for mitigation of environmental degradation and improve supply resilience to support population growth and climate change.

Sustainable land management and climate change adaptation research in RIC 3 will work in south and south east Asia, Mexico and east Africa to investigate: (a) climate and anthropogenic pressures on climate and anthropogenic pressures on soil and water quality and quantity; (b) geoscience solutions for sustainable land management to improve agricultural and groundwater resilience; and (c) urban geohazards which are compounded by rapid expansion, and mitigations to increase resilience to these pressures and from climate change impacts.

Title "We are all Tributaries": a participatory art engagement workshop at Metro Manila, Philippines. 16/02/2023
Description Workshop developed by Nicole Archer/Manley (BGS, UK) with Aileen Guzman from the Environmental Science Department, School of Science and Engineering in Ateneo de Manila University. The workshop invited two groups of final year Environmental Science BSc students from Ateneo de Manila to participate in a creative activity as part of the Living with Water Exhibition in the Doreen Blackbox, Areté, Ateneo de Manila. For this creative activity the students were asked a few days before the creative activity to: • Think about being a tributary and how water is diverted from the natural hydrological system to create our own human hydrological system. • Take or find an image that relates to how they think they are a human tributary that is interconnected with the natural hydrological system. • When they were happy with their image, to print it out in whatever way was possible for them. Before taking part in the creative activity, all students were given an information sheet and consent form outlining the activity explaining what they would be doing during and how any personal data would be stored after the activity, as part of a research project. Any questions they had were answered before beginning the activity. At the beginning of the creative activity each student was asked to take time to look at the 'Living with Water" exhibition, where they then ended in Space three: a space where there were tables and chairs that formed a space for active engagement. The students then sat around a magnetic map that showed a natural river system that begins in the mountains and ends in the sea and three different human made hydrological systems. They were then asked to describe the image they brought and explain why they brought their image. The discussion was then to talk about experience and different kinds of knowledge that creates understanding that is important to interpreting important aspects for environmental science. 38 BSc Environmental Science third year students from Ateneo de Manila University attended. The purpose was to think about different kinds of knowledge, i.e knowledge that comes from experience and observed knowledge relating to science that are important in understanding environmental problems.

Impact Outcomes of the workshop Student feedback After the workshop several students spoke very positively to Nicole Archer/Manley about how they enjoyed the workshop. One student wanted to know how they could continue using creative practice in environmental science. Generally, the view was very positive, in that they really enjoyed the workshop and for many of them it was the first time they had experienced a workshop of this kind. As they were on of the group of students who joined the university during the pandemic, it was the first time they had got together and experienced what it is like to be part of a workshop. It also helped them to think about their projects and what they can do for their research projects, and how they can be creative, when thinking about their research when getting data. They are used to getting data from secondary sources, whereas the discussion was focused on attaining primary data. It was also new for them to understand they can gather data from narratives, or from drawings as experienced in the workshop. The images discussed during the workshop showed that the students understood the task they were given and were proactive in understanding many complex issues about water, environment and aspects about the human management of water and also how the human is interconnected with water. This kind of workshop could be created to teach teaching student ways to interpret environmental complexity relating to environmental problems. Further outcome As there was such positive student feedback, a new inter-disciplinary elective called Environmental Interpretation is now being co-developed by the Environmental Science Department in Ateneo de Manila and BGS. There is a paper in the process of being written between Environmental Science Department in Ateneo de Manila and BGS.

Title Living with Water: An exhibition. Doreen Black Box Theater, Arete, Ateneo Art Gallery, Metro Manila, Philippines. 14 to 18 Feb 2023
Description This exhibition is the outcome and of a creative practice research, supported by the Sandbox Residency of Areté, the Royal Society Challenges Research Fund, UK, SC Johnson, the Ateneo Research Institute for Science and Engineering (ARISE), the School of Science and Engineering (SOSE), the Department of Environmental Science, the Vietnam National University, the British Geological Survey (UK) and Queen Margaret University (UK). The purpose of the study was to bring together researchers working in multi-hazards and resilience, in three countries: the Philippines, Vietnam and the UK, to share and compare their cultural experiences of flooding rivers to form different viewpoints to accompany their research in disaster alleviation. Often researchers, policy and decision makers who work with problems associated to natural disasters have never experienced for themselves the moment of a natural disaster, yet their work influences guidelines, frameworks, policies, and decisions relating to these disasters. Viewing natural disasters with a purely objective approach forms a positional relationship of the researcher, policy, or decision maker as being on the "outside" of the occurring natural disaster. Only knowledge formed through subjective experience can create a viewpoint for understanding disasters from a position of known experience. Experiences cannot be objectified, as they are difficult to describe, but they provide important local knowledge in terms of being resilient, maintaining social empathy, being creative and many other qualities which are shown in this exhibition. This exhibition was created to form a subjective experience as a journey through three different spaces to reflect upon the importance of experience: Space 1 is an introduction to three rivers in three countries: Vietnam, the Philippines and the UK. Space 2 is an installation providing extracts of people's experiences of flooding relating to the introduced rivers in Space 1. Space 3 is a space where we can learn from one another's cultures and experiences and think about how we could become more resilient to living with rivers.
Type Of Art Artistic/Creative Exhibition
Year Produced 2023
Impact There is a website about the exhibition: https://www.living-with-water.org/ and there is an on-line publication that is being printed as a hard copy and will be distributed to national and international libraries. The online link is: https://indd.adobe.com/view/a63d7fa4-8b29-4914-85b5-7f66b93b477 A film is currently being made of the exhibition. Outcomes: 1) The exhibition gave people the space to reflect upon their own experiences of flooding in their local area. 2) A virtual space became the repository of various types of knowledge, which are normally not associated to scientific projects. Some of these were: non-scientific work that has been done in the Philippines that has helped relating to flooding, cultural attitudes relating to flooding that are not easy to express, ways in which people live during flooding. 3) The exhibition brought together people from many different disciplines, including many people working in science and other disciplines who had never been to the art gallery. They came to see the exhibition as it was widely advertised and were curious to know about an exhibition that brought together environmental science and art, even though they knew very little about art. Around 300 people came to the exhibition over 4 days. 5) The engaged participatory art allowed ideas to develop a program that uses the idea "Living with Water". The aim would be to influence water policy in the Philippines, where the policy takes on board that water functions beyond administrative boarders and needs to be understood as a holistic, dynamic continuation, where administrations work together depending on the dynamics of rivers. This idea is now being developed for further funding proposals for BGS to work in the Philippines. 6) A paper is being written about the exhibition and how it transformed ways of perceiving rivers in an urbanized context to form ways to improve flood resilience.

Description Overall, the programme has achieved its initial objectives in year 1 to evolve existing and develop new partnerships through stakeholder workshops, reviews of innovation development, data gathering, fieldwork campaigns and beginning to leverage aligned funding. Many of these activities are evidenced as outputs, particularly for stakeholder workshop reports, collaborative fieldwork and funding opportunities, all of which, have strengthened the diverse partnerships which the programme relies upon. Line of sight for pathways to impact have been refined for each of the project activities, identifying when necessary where additional partners need to be recruited to ensure excellent research is used by practitioners or decision makers. Stakeholders involved in this process range from community level engagement to academia, practitioner and decision makers at a local and national level, alongside broader multi-lateral engagement. For example, CCOP, UNICEF, FAO-UN, African Ministers Council for Water.
Exploitation Route It is year 1, and therefore the progress to date has largely been about setting the foundation for the full 4-year programme to have line of site for pathways to impact. Our logframe has captured ongoing progress and will define the narratives for each project to help guide the specific partnership arrangements across the 38 project activities around the world. The so called 'others' in the question, include the community representatives, academia, practitioners, decision makers at national scale and multi-lateral organisations. All, involved in the co-design of activities to ensure excellent research can be applied to tackling global environmental challenges.

Description The project was broad in scope and reported via the quarterly NERC reporting requirements. We provide here one example of uptake of findings generated from the ODA programme have been used in a wider setting to demonstrate an impactful outcome. In 2022, BGS coauthored a UN World Water Development report 'Groundwater Making the visible invisible' https://www.unwater.org/publications/un-world-water-development-report-2022/, built out from previous ODA work which supported a number of other groundwater resilience initiatives: An African Ministers Council for Water (AMCOW) White paper on groundwater in Africa which was launched at the World Water Forum in Dakar in March 2022; a new hydrogeological map for West Africa - published in March 2022 at the World Water Forum in Dakar along with a digital dataset. A high resolution copy is available on NORA and include new work by the IGRD programme on aquifer yields https://nora.nerc.ac.uk/id/eprint/532446/. Overall, this example demonstrates how research and capacity strengthening outputs and building of networks were incorporated into high level policy international guidance documents for the United Nations.

UNITEN gave a presentation on the vegegrout preparation and testing process to help inform BGS preparation and testing in UK. Geomapping gave presentation of application of drone based hyperspectral imaging for seepage detection (potential slope failure precursor): this may be viable for BGS SIN tactical fund proposal in Kuala Lumpur. Discussion between those present about Petronas funding call for community based DRR - idea proposed to use vegegrout on small slopes (locally produced and applied), coupled with knowledge exchange and community based awareness (like Slopewatch) for 'uplifting lives' or 'planting better tomorrow' grants. Likely UNITEN and Geomapping will bid (would like to include BGS too). UNITEN have won grant for geophysical monitoring and hydrogeological modelling at Kenyir dam - BGS provided LoS. UNITEN would like to install PRIME there. NDA agreed, MoA now proposed specifically for IGRD-BFG project.

Results and Impact In November 2023, BGS hosted three IGRD NEE7943 T03 project partners both from the Philippines Nuclear Research Institute, and a partner from GFZ Potsdam. The purpose of the two weeks' visit was to perform experimental and analytical studies on several aspects that are essential to progress towards more environmentally friendly mining and processing of nickel laterite ore in the Philippines and globally. Namely, the project partner from PNRI worked on the metallogenesis of critical metals; they performed low temperature co-precipitation experiments to provide insight into the potential for CO2 mineralisation during processing of ore, and the partner from GFZ Potsdam undertook a series of high temperature high pressure experiments simulating ore processing with subsequent CO2 mineralisation of the waste materials.
The two weeks of experimental-analytical sprint resulted in (i) a stronger research partnership between PNRI-GFZ-BGS, with clear common goals for future research activities and, (ii) a cross-disciplinary dataset that will be written into peer-reviewed publications, and used in the preparation of bids for external funding in 2024.
