Abstract
The British Ocean Sediment Core Research Facility (BOSCORF) is a unique and internationally-recognised facility providing the UK community with some of the best core logging facilities available in Europe. It provides research facilities used in all NERC Theme Science Priority Areas and contributes directly to NERC Directed and Core Programmes and high-profile international projects. Its state-of-the-art facilities underpin crucial UK research in all areas encompassed by the NERC mission.
BOSCORF was founded as a NERC facility in 1997 and the core repository was extended in 2001, this extension was envisaged as providing storage for the next ten years of core acquisition (i.e. to 2011). Since 2001, BOSCORF's core holdings have increased very significantly with 2014 alone seeing a 20% increase in core material held. In 2018, the total volume of sediment cores held within BOSCORF is 8.8 km, which equates to £295 million investment by NERC in ship time for their collection.
Since 2014, the number of users per year has more than doubled and the number of Ph.D. students supported by the facility has increased threefold. Recent years have also seen a marked widening of the BOSCORF user base to include archaeologists, geographers and biomedical researchers in addition to marine geologists. This demonstrates the importance of BOSCORF facilities in a wide range of research areas.

Planned Impact
BOSCORF provides a centralised community facility for the long-term optimised storage of sediment cores, along with a suite of state-of-the-art non-destructive sediment core scanners available for community use. BOSCORF thereby provides the science community with analytical capabilities and that would otherwise be inaccessible to researchers. Impact will be reviewed annually by the BOSCORF Advisory Group and evaluated against the LRI KPIs and benefits realisation plan.
Science Impact: BOSCORF is key to enabling research on sediment cores from a range of environments, which are critical for research into past environmental change, natural hazards, sustainable use of natural resources and pollution. Science impact will monitored through BOSCORF contribution to peer reviewed publications.
Postgraduate and Early Career Researchers (ECRs) Training Programme Impact: BOSCORF plays a major role in training postgraduate students and ECRs. Training is delivered on a one-to-one basis, through formal courses and workshops, and through scientific meetings and literature.
International community impact: BOSCORF actively promotes and facilitates interdisciplinary and collaborative research; expansion of research and industry networks in the UK, EU and worldwide. Through the dissemination of specialised knowledge and innovation of new developments in core analysis and curatorial protocols, BOSCORF will continue to play a major role in the international science community.
Outreach/Public Engagement Activities Impact: Engaging the public with BOSCORF supported research raises both the quality and impact of the research. Increasing public 'ocean literacy' is one of the aims of the host institute, NOCS, and engaging the public with the BOSCORF core collection exposes them to the full range of research conducted by the marine geosciences research group at NOCS, the NERC research vessels and the wider environmental science community who rely upon the facility.

Description | The BOSCORF ITRAX micro-XRF core scanner has been used to characterise sediment cores collected as part of the "Blue Mining" consortium, will develop solutions that will bring sustainable deep sea mining a big step closer. The project addresses all aspects of the value chain in this field, from resource discovery to resource assessment and from exploitation technologies to the legal and regulatory framework. The project "Breakthrough Solutions for Mineral Extraction and Processing in Extreme Environment - Blue Mining" received funding from the European Commission. The extreme conditions found on the deep-ocean floor raise specific challenges, both technically and environmentally, which are demanding and entirely different from land-based mining. Today, European offshore industries and marine research institutions have some global advantage through their significant experience and technology and are well positioned to develop engineering and knowledge-based solutions to resource exploitation in these challenging and sensitive environments. |

Title | Multiproxy dataset |
Description | he global climate has been dominated by glacial-interglacial variations since the intensification of Northern Hemisphere glaciation 2.7 million years ago. Although the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation has exerted strong influence on recent climatic changes, there is controversy over its influence on Northern Hemisphere glaciation because its deep limb, North Atlantic Deep Water, was thought to have weakened. Here we show that Northern Hemisphere glaciation was amplified by the intensified Atlantic meridional overturning circulation, based on multi-proxy records from the subpolar North Atlantic. We found that the Iceland-Scotland Overflow Water, contributing North Atlantic Deep Water, significantly increased after 2.7 million years ago and was actively maintained even in early stages of individual glacials, in contrast with late stages when it drastically decreased because of iceberg melting. Probably, the active Nordic Seas overturning during the early stages of glacials facilitated the efficient growth of ice sheets and amplified glacial oscillations. |

Results and Impact | INTRODUCTION TO SEDIMENT CORE DESCRIPTIVE LOGGING WORKSHOP Suzanne Maclachlan & BOSCORF staff (NOC, UK) Sedimentary logging is the graphical method for describing a succession of sediments and crucially forms the foundation of most sediment core analyses. The workshop is intended for geoscience students who have no experience of logging soft sediment cores, but who wish to gain some insight into how sediment core descriptions can be used to interpret environmental settings. This is a laboratory-based introductory workshop to sedimentological core logging, smear slide analysis and data visualisation, using examples from the BOSCORF collection to cover a range of environments. Included in the day course will be a tour of BOSCORF and NOC. 17 December 2019 |
