Abstract

The three-year timescale is particularly exciting with the possibility of Higgs discovery at the Tevatron and the opening of the new energy frontier at the LHC: we will focus our efforts on Higgs analysis, discovery and interpretation, and the search for new physics in CP violation and rare B decays. Improved analysis techniques, well-calibrated detectors, increased computing power and theoretical input will be essential. All academics are heavily involved in the LHC programme and our strategy is to generate leading-edge physics results from two experiments (ATLAS and LHCb) based upon expertise developed in those experiments and from CDF and ZEUS, as well as ALEPH. We plan to provide timely first results in Higgs limit setting and discovery for ATLAS and CDF. We will secure high-quality completion on CDF where we have set demanding goals in the Higgs analyses that will benefit ATLAS. Our ZEUS involvements in the hadronic final state and prompt photon sectors will similarly underpin first ATLAS results. Based on our earlier work, we will be key players in answering questions concerning the origin of mass and the nature of CP violation. For LHCb, we will discover rare two body B decays and search for CP violation in charm with early data samples. We will perform a detailed study of a rare decay process and a comparison of tree and loop diagram mediated measurements of the unitarity angle gamma that offer significant new physics sensitivity. We continue to invest in and promote a world-class Detector Development activity to enable longer-term initiatives and our Grid strength is aimed at maximising our impact in LHC physics. We additionally lever support through Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and the Faculty in these areas. We have set up physics analysis streams for ATLAS and LHCb, using the Grid, and will fully exploit the first LHC data. We will also maintain our involvement in longer-term initiatives where we have leadership roles. We presently participate in the LHCb upgrade, the ATLAS-FP initiative, the super-LHC intensity upgrades and future neutrino initiatives. We anticipate greater involvement in linear collider work, contingent upon discoveries made at the LHC. Over the next three years we will develop these areas and progress those where early investment will become most productive, consistent with the highest priority of LHC physics exploitation.

PI Contribution ATLAS Tracker Upgrade: The group contributes to the following work packages: WP3 - development of radiation hard Si sensors, WP4 - development of interconnects; and WP7 - module engineering. For WP3, R Bates and Eklund have developed an analogue readout system based on the LHCb Beetle readout along with associated mechanics and cooling system. This allows Si detectors to be characterised to evaluate HV operation and charge collection efficiency at low temperatures. F Doherty has developed a system on the 300mm probe station to probe full wafers to estimate yields of different sensor designs. These will form the basis of a QA system during Si sensor production for the tracker upgrade. For WP4, Eklund has designed test structures to evaluate the performance of Si detectors with readout integrated by depositing hybrids directly on the sensor, so called using MCM-D (multi-chip module deposited) technology. Test structures to investigate the effect of a Cu ground plane have been fabricated by Acreo in Sweden. Different Cu ground planes: full, grid, half-covered, together with bias through to the Si were implemented on a wafer and evaluated using the 300mm probe station by F Doherty. The capacitance of the devices is being compared to that predicted by TCAD models of the test structures. For WP7, R Bates and Melone have built systems to evaluate thermal properties of material and interfaces over a range of temperatures. FEA models are also being developed to compare the measured results to data, providing benchmarks for future stave designs. R Bates has made stress tests of materials in collaboration with the Mechanical Engineering department and this is being taken forward in an innovative study of the Young's modulus of various materials under low stress in collaboration with Rutherford Laboratory materials group.

PI Contribution Physics Analysis: The group is focusing on two key areas: first physics and Higgs searches. The first physics work includes leading studies of minimum bias events and early QCD measurements and studies of high-mass di-lepton events [AP12,AP13] while the Higgs searches have been focusing on the low mass region in the channel ttH, with lepton plus jets top decay and H?bb. During the past three years group members were invited to give 18 presentations at International conferences and wrote 14 internal papers and reports. 9 PhD students contributed to the work. In addition the group contributed significantly to 10 collaboration journal papers. The strong activity within the group is reflected in the number of talks by Glasgow physicists during the period of the rolling grant: 165 in ATLAS physics meetings and 37 in Inner Detector meetings (including SCT meetings).

PI Contribution The CDF goals funded in the last grant proposal have been achieved. We published our Bc analysis [CC13], continued to present our results in heavy flavour physics [CT1,CT8] and finalised our work on J/? [CG2]. The Tevatron has been running reliably and with ever increasing luminosity thus extending the physics reach to rare processes. Based on this we turned all our efforts to Higgs searches. Using the WW final state and in combination with D0, the Higgs has been excluded at 95% CL for Mh=170 GeV with just 3fb-1 per experiment and more than 5fb-1 has been collected. In this time we have developed lepton efficiency determination tools using a tag and probe method. We developed a cuts technique followed by neural networks and then combined this with a matrix element analysis to obtain the best sensitivity. The high-level software package used to achieve this has been adapted to work for both ATLAS and CDF. In two years we have moved the Tevatron sensitivity to the Higgs from 14 times the standard model to within a two sigma exclusion. The luminosity increased by a factor of 10 so the improvement went beyond that expected from the increase in statistics, reflecting our analysis efforts. These efforts have culminated in a publication of these techniques with further publications coming when CDF alone has standard model sensitivity [CC1].

PI Contribution The programme for the development of detectors for future experiments is led by O'Shea. The group strategy is to acquire and retain expertise on appropriate emerging detector technologies that can offer increased performance in the difficult environments of future particle physics experiments. R Bates, Buttar, Eklund and Parkes provide crucial contributions to this programme. This area has continued to be very successful in attracting external funding from a variety of sources. The expertise acquired and retained by the group from these knowledge exchange applications makes a substantial contribution to the detector activities for particle physics applications. The primary purpose of this activity is to provide access to the advanced technologies required to build future experiments for Particle Physics. The expertise built up in semiconductor detectors over the past 20 years has enabled the group to play leading roles in the development and construction of detector systems for both ATLAS and LHCb. Generic detector development undertaken by the group enables us to be well placed to make major contributions to the LHC upgrades and to future experiments in particle physics, as well as other areas of strategic importance to STFC. During the past three years group members were invited to give 22 presentations at International conferences. 8 PhD students contributed to the work. In addition the group contributed significantly to 10 collaboration papers.

PI Contribution During the period of the grant, we have upgraded our computing operations to provide an efficient internal service. We focus on group-specific servers, desktop and laptop support. The required functionality includes Desktop Support, Email Access, File Storage, Group Printing, Laptop Support, Login Services, Network Services, Video Conferencing, Voice Over IP and internal Web Pages. Physics analysis development is generally performed on the Scientific Linux 4/5 (SL) desktops with laptops also configured to dual-boot supporting Windows XP and SL5. The latest standard desktop consists of Intel E6750 Core2 duo processors. We expect to deploy laptops with virtualised SL installations on top of a Windows OS in the coming years, following a 4-year replacement plan. Laptops provide an essential function for use away from the group base. Server systems have been upgraded to dedicated racked servers during the period of the grant to provide an efficient and reliable overall system.

PI Contribution During the period under review, Glasgow was a member of the LCFI collaboration, which was initiated to develop possible sensor technologies and design a high-performance vertex detector for the ILC. Members of the group contributed in two main areas. Progress was made in realising a new generation of CCD-based detectors, column parallel CCDs, for which Buttar and Maneuski developed simulations of charge transport after irradiation [DC2,DC4]. In addition, a proof-of-principle charge storage, CCD-readout device (ISIS) was produced, with testbeam and analysis participation from Cheplakov and Laing [DC8,DC9].

PI Contribution Physics Analysis: Flavour physics is sensitive to virtual quantum loops that are caused by particles that can be far heavier than those directly produced at the LHC. New Physics (NP) sensitivity is already the focus of the current Glasgow LHCb physics programme in the loop process mediated hadronic two body B (and D) decays and the Bd?K*?? process (which is particularly relevant to the upgrade). Detector Design: The LHCb upgrade will run at ten times higher luminosity and therefore must introduce a displaced vertex trigger at the first level of triggering. The central challenge of the upgrade is reading out the full detector at the LHC beam crossing frequency of 40MHz, a factor 400 faster than any other LHC experiment. Core elements are the construction of a radiation hard 40MHz VELO and 40 MHz photon detectors for the RICH. Parkes is one of the originators of the upgrade proposal. He co-organised the first LHCb wide workshop on the upgrade and was primary author of the recently submitted LHCb upgrade Statement of Interest. He is co-coordinator of the LHCb VELO upgrade, recently organised the first detailed design workshop for the VELO, and organised the participation of new UK VELO groups (Bristol, Manchester and Warwick). Eklund has led the study of data readout rates for the VELO, the central challenge of the upgrade. The group has already developed and tested prototype pixel devices in beam tests. Soler is leading the work on new photon detectors for an upgraded RICH detector. Flat panel photomultiplier tubes (PMT) from Hamamatsu and micro-channel plate (MCP) PMTs are being considered as future options. MCP PMTs offer very fast resolution (35 ps) and insensitivity to magnetic fields that would make these photon detectors very attractive in order to add time-of-flight (TOF) capabilities to an upgraded RICH, and enhance the particle identification capabilities at low momenta.

PI Contribution As a result of a Glasgow proposal (Borghi, Parkes) the first beam-induced tracks at the LHC were reconstructed by the group and collaborators (notably Liverpool, Nikhef) in the LHCb VELO in August 2008 [LT12]. These are being used by the group to commission the VELO software, pattern recognition, tracking and alignment and hence to facilitate an early start to physics analysis. During the past three years group members were invited to give 16 presentations at International conferences and generated 34 individual collaboration papers and notes. Nine PhD and two Masters students contributed to the work. The strong activity within the group is reflected in the 278 talks that were given by Glasgow physicists in LHCb meetings during the rolling grant period. Physics Analysis: The physics studies of the group divide into two areas: hadronic beauty and charm decays for CP violation and lifetime studies; and new physics sensitive measurements of B?K*µ+µ-. A precise measurement of the CKM triangle angle ? is one of the primary aims of the LHCb experiment.

PI Contribution Soler leads the Neutrino Factory effort at Glasgow. He is still a member of the neutrino experiment NOMAD, (three published NOMAD papers in this reporting period), and has been carrying out Neutrino Factory R&D research since 1999. He is a member of the UK Neutrino Factory consortium, he is one of the original proponents of the HARP experiment and a member of the International Muon Ionization Cooling Experiment (MICE). He is leading activities of the Detector group at the International Scoping Study (ISS) for Future Neutrino Facilities and the Neutrino Factory International Design Study and is the leader of the Detector Work Package (WP5) of the EuroNu Design Study.

PI Contribution The past three years have continued to be an excellent period for the work of the ZEUS collaboration, and of the Glasgow group within it. During the period Glasgow have been major authors in the following ZEUS publications and work about to be published: • A final detailed study of event shapes produced in DIS [ZC1] was published where we have tested the power correction model and evaluated its strengths and limitations in evaluating ?s (all Glasgow work). • A final detailed study of azimuthal correlations in DIS was performed [ZC2]. An energy-flow analysis method was used, which permitted the use of both neutral and charged hadrons and extended the phase space over previous measurements. • A measurement of multiplicities in neutral current DIS gave a comparison with measurements from other processes, in agreement with the universality of fragmentation [ZC8] (also Glasgow led). • A study was performed that has resolved earlier anomalies in multi-lepton production and is currently in the final editorial stage. • Preliminary results from the full sample of prompt photons in DIS have been measured and are in the stages of preparation for preliminary status.
