Description The post holder initially worked on the test and validation of simulated proton-proton collision samples, to confirm and determine the extent by which out-of-time collision pile-up influences the trigger rate of different calorimetric first-level (L1C) trigger objects, and how this effect depends on varying pile-up conditions (the superposition of multiple collisions). The main part of the research activity was dedicated first to the development of the software necessary to emulate first-level topological triggers, which is now available as the basis for the integration of L1C topological triggers into the full ATLAS experiment event simulation. By using these tools, the post holder performed a detailed evaluation of the performance of topological triggers across a broad range of benchmark physics processes, such as Higgs, top quark and W-boson production. His studies have contributed to the body of work underpinning the Letter of Intent for the Phase-1 Upgrade of the ATLAS Experiment.
Exploitation Route Fast topological triggering is a technique that is crucial not only for future particle detectors, and for upgrades of the existing ones such as ATLAS, but also can be used in a variety of applications that require fast pattern recognition processing.
