Description We have developed a state of the art imaging spectrometer which operates at X-ray wavelengths of light. Using this instrument we will be able to work out the composition of Mercury's surface which will unlock clues on the planet's formation history. We will also be able to study the impact of charged particles with the surface. This is the first imaging X-ray telescope to fly on a planetary mission.
The instrument is highly complex and required a number of specialised approaches to be successfully built - for example gold coating on the optics frame; special light weight carbon fibre tubes for the two telescopes capable of surviving launch; complex stack of fragile optics capable of imaging as well as spectroscopy.
Exploitation Route The technology development required for this instrument can be used for multiple further projects (and has been). The ultra-light optics (Micro Channel Plate) developed at Leicester, which are inherently radiation hard can be used for a number of space instrument projects. The applications to non-space related projects (spin out) is actively researched and implemented by the wider Leicester team.
The on board software for the instrument may be useful for future space projects at Leicester.
