e-infrastructure capital grants for JASMIN
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Oxford
Department Name: Oxford Physics
Abstract
We intend to develop a suite of community intercomparison software tools and this proposed capital grant will enable us to contract a software development company to start.
Planned Impact
This is primarily a low-goal scoping exercise which we intend will deliver a significant milestone upon which to build future work on the development of a community intercomparison suite of tools. It is expected that subsequent NERC funding will be sought to support this planed future work.

Community Intercomparison Suite (CIS) v1.4.0: a tool for intercomparing models and observations
in Geoscientific Model Development
Description | We have developed the Community Intercomparison Suite, an open software initiative for easy access and analysis of complex earth system related datasets. |
Exploitation Route | The software is opens source and available for public use. We are working with a number of user groups and have proposed to use CIS as core evaluation tool in the large DFID/NERC global model development proposal IMPALA, led by the UK MetOffice. The idea is to use CIS to provide easy access to IMPALA data to African partners as well as the scientific community. This has now been further supported by STFC Concepts funding. Since the last submission period: - CIS has been elected as core evaluation tool for the aerosol component of the MetOffice / NERC climate model (HadGEM-UKCA) and the UK Earth System Model - CIS is being used by the Facilities for Airborne Atmospheric Measurements - CIS is being implemented by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute to support EUMETSAT projects (in collaboration with Oxord) |

Description | The Community Intercomparison Suite is an open software initiative and therefore available for public use. We are working with a number of user groups and have proposed to use CIS as core evaluation tool in the large DFID/NERC global model development proposal IMPALA, led by the UK MetOffice. CIS is used nationally and internationally: 1) to provide easy access to IMPALA project data to African partners as well as the scientific community 2) as core of a new evaluation platform for the UK Chemistry Aerosol Community Climate model and the UK Earth System Model 3) by individual research groups worldwide 4) by the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute for the analysis of satellite data |

Title | Community Intercomparison Suite |
Description | We are leading a community effort to develop an automated model/data community intercomparison suite (CIS) within the JASMIN environment at the Centre for Environmental Data Archiving (CEDA) that will provide automated scientific analysis of heterogeneous datasets from models and observations. The funding provided through this grant was used to develop the core software of CIS with data analysis, plotting, co-location and outputting capabilities The developed code is portable and open source. It will be centrally deployed in JASMIN at CEDA but can equally be used directly on the user side. |
Type Of Material | Improvements to research infrastructure |
Year Produced | 2013 |
Provided To Others? | Yes |
Impact | Follow up funding leading to Phases II and III of the CIS development. Deployment on national JASMIN server for community use. Follow up funding through STFC Concepts call. CIS will be the core of a new evaluation suite for aerosol processes in the UKCA Chemistry Aerosol Climate model and the UKESM Earth System Model. It is further used at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute and the Rutherford Appleton Laboratories. |

Impact | The CIS development has received follow up funding from NERC as part of the JASMIN capital infrastructure investment. We are currently in Phase III of the development, testing the model for big data. CIS will be deployed to support the NERC funded CLARIFY| measurement campaign in 2016 and is proposed as data handling tool to support African partners in the DFID/NERC IMPALA proposal for Future Climate for Africa, led by the MetOffice. |
