Oval Cluster KS2 Mission to Space 2013/4

Lead Research Organisation: Wyvil Primary School
Department Name: Science

Abstract

Aims;

1) To broaden children's knowledge and understanding of the solar system and space science
2) To increase children's engagement in Science
3) To develop children's skills in research, teamwork, communication, presentation, ICT and data handling.
4) To develop local networks between teachers teaching Science to Key Stage 2 pupils
5) To develop teacher's understanding of the solar system and space science
6) To encourage teachers to use diverse interactive creative methods to teach primary space science
7) To increase parental engagement in children's learning in science
8) To further develop the Home- School partnership

The impact of our project will be that the children involved know and understand more about the solar system and space, they are more engaged with their science learning, and they have developed their skills of working together in groups, presenting research, using ICT and presenting data in graphs and charts. Teachers will develop a local network of KS2 science co-ordinators and teachers, and will share resources, ideas, good practice and contacts. They will also have a range of new ideas to help them in the teaching of space science in future years.

Planned Impact

We will write up a report on the project including what we did, the contacts, activities and evaluations, how it was organised and what impact it had, and circulate this among the other 60 Primary Schools in Lambeth using the termly Cluster Managers' network forum. We will also put information about the project in our school and cluster newsletters ( https://sites.google.com/a/wyvil.org.uk/ovalcluster/parents) and on our school and cluster websites.

We have recently established a local Science Subject Leaders network who meet termly to discuss Science teaching in our cluster schools, and this project will feed into that, bringing new classroom teachers into the network and providing greater opportunity to share resources and ideas and examine the impact of project on attainment.
