From supersymmetry, strings and branes to the LHC and cosmology.

Abstract

The proposed research is part of a quest to understand Nature at its most fundamental level, leading to a single, complete and consistent theory of physics. At small distances, the behaviour of matter and forces is governed by quantum mechanics. The subatomic electromagnetic, weak and strong forces have been understood since the formulation of the Standard Model some 40 years ago. These forces and the particles they act upon are described by quantum field theory, and it is crucial for mathematical consistency that the Standard Model incorporates a large amount of symmetry. The Standard Model has enjoyed spectacular experimental success, culminating in the recent discovery at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN of a strong candidate to be the Higgs Boson, the last particle predicted by the Standard Model that remained to be found.

Our current description of gravity is Einstein's very successful theory of General Relativity, which describes the motion of planets, stars and galaxies as well as the Universe as a whole. Unfortunately, General Relativity is not consistent with quantum mechanics and so cannot be simply combined with the Standard Model to provide a consistent theory of all the four forces. The Standard Model also fails to explain the hierarchy of mass scales in fundamental physics, the proliferation of particle types and the nature of the dark matter in the Universe, which is known to be present in large quantities but has not yet been seen.

It is widely believed that supersymmetry, which is a symmetry that exchanges fermions (such as the electron) with bosons (such as the photon), will play an important role in formulating a unified theory of the four forces. Supersymmetry predicts the existence of yet unobserved subatomic particles, and the search for these was an important motivation behind the construction of the LHC. One of them could in fact be dark matter, and hence play an important role in forming structures in the universe. Other theories of physics beyond the Standard Model postulate that 'elementary' particles are in fact extended, composite objects, or that there are more dimensions of space.

Strings are microscopic objects that are extended along one dimension and can vibrate, rather like strings on a violin. Although the underlying theory of strings and branes is not known, their effects at low energies are completely described by supergravity theories, and by studying these it has been realized that objects, called branes, and symmetries, called dualities, are important parts of the full theory. Branes can be thought of as generalizations of strings to objects that are extended along more than one dimension. Remarkably, one finds that strings and branes can lead to consistent quantum theories in four dimensions that contain gravity as well as the Standard Model, while also offering prospects for novel physics beyond the Standard Model.

Part of the proposed research aims to find and understand this underlying theory of string and branes. Although quantum field theories have had spectacular theoretical and experimental success, leading to the most accurately known confirmation between theory and experiment, there are very few quantities which have been computed exactly. In recent years, a correspondence between certain string theories and quantum field theories in four dimensions has been found. This has led to new techniques in the former that enable the exact computation of quantities of physical interest. This is part of the ongoing research, as well as exploring the possible consequences of strings and branes for physics beyond the Standard Model, and understanding what other new physics is being revealed by the LHC, astrophysical experiments and cosmology.

Planned Impact

The proposed research will benefit most directly those working on theoretical physics, in particular on supersymmetry, string theory, particle physics phenomenology, astroparticle physics and cosmology: more generally, those seeking to find a single consistent theory of physics. There are hundreds of researchers working on these topics in dozens of universities within the UK, and many more worldwide. The work involves some of the most advanced mathematics, and hence is also relevant to mathematicians, in particular those working on group theory and geometry. This research is also directly relevant to those working in other areas of physics, such as experimental searches for new particles at the LHC, astroparticle experiments, the formulation of cosmological models of inflation, dark matter and galaxy creation, and theories of novel states of matter such as superconductors.

Past work on theoretical physics has, in the fullness of time, been of considerable use to society, either as a direct result of the new physics found, or as a consequence of the new mathematics and technical developments that were developed. These have led to direct inputs into industry. Certainly our work is in this tradition.

Industry also benefits from the training of young researchers in the ability to solve hard and complex problems. The theoretical physics groups at King's have trained many younger researchers who have later entered the financial and other sectors of the economy and applied their problem-solving skills. Moreover, cutting-edge theoretical physics attracts young intellectual talent from both within and outside the UK. A substantial fraction of these take non-academic jobs in the UK, thus providing the economy with highly-trained people who are competitive at a global level. Such spin-offs from fundamental science have long been vital to the international economic and industrial competitiveness that the UK seeks. A crucial feature of the modern UK's economic and social wealth is its international reputation as a world leader for independent thinking in both the academic and industrial sectors.

In addition to these economic factors, the general public has strong interest in the fundamental questions about our Universe. This has recently been stimulated by the research at the LHC and, in particular, the discovery of a possible Higgs boson. The general public therefore benefits continuing investigation into Nature at its smallest scales, as proposed here.

In summary, the UK can be proud of having one of the world's most prestigious scientific traditions, which has long been a cornerstone of the UK's intellectual health, economic wealth and culture. Our proposed research will continue this tradition.

Description Gauge theories play a central role in our current understanding of the fundamental interactions. In the last 60 years numerous tools have been developed that are mostly applicable in the regime of weak interaction, which, however, is not always an adequate approximation. The situation has changed recently when powerful Integrability techniques were developed at KCL in collaboration with other research centers, with the KCL group playing the key role. They allowed for the exact analytical and high precision (up to 60 digits!) numerical description of such key observables as the spectrum, quark-anti-quark potential and BFKL Pomeron eigenvalue, applicable for an arbitrary strength of the interaction in some gauge theories. Notably, some of these results are expected to be relevant for the realistic quantum chromodynamics.

Researchers on the grant also studied the dynamics of so-called M5-branes. These are five-dimensional extended objects that move in an eleven-dimensional spacetime. Mathematically the dynamics are described by a six-dimensional quantum field theory with very interesting properties. However the problem is that although quantum field theory has been much studied and is ubiquitous in four-dimensions (e.g. it underlies the standard model of particle physics), very little is known about quantum field theories in higher dimensions. Thus understanding the M5-brane is an important objective for string theory and M-theory but it also has important implications for our understanding of quantum field theory in general.

During the grant researchers obtained new descriptions of this mysterious theory, including ones with no manifest time dimension and proposed new classes of operators which help expose its symmetries.
Exploitation Route We expect the exact methods we developed will affect our understanding of the gauge theories in general - the building blocks of the modern description of Nature in theoretical physics. They have immediate impact on the high energy physics of strong interactions. Furthermore, we also expect these results to advance our understanding of the AdS/CFT duality which will bring us closer to the understanding of quantum gravity.

Description Although the primary focus of the work of the King's Theoretical Physics and Particle Physics and Cosmology groups is to advance our fundamental knowledge of Nature there is an important impact on the UK and worldwide economy. Such research has had an incalculable impact in the long term however on shorter timescales there are important benefits and applications beyond the immediate academic circles through Knowledge Exchange. The Theoretical Physics Group in the Department of Mathematics runs a self-contained Masters programme and both groups train PhD students. Roughly three quarters of our MSc and MSci students and half of our PhD students take up careers outside academia after completion of their degree, going into a variety of high-skill jobs in industry and the financial sector. Some recent examples of employers that hired our graduate students include eBay, the Ministry of Defence, Tesco, Natwest and UBS. This leads to a crucial exchange of knowledge and problem-solving skills acquired and developed in physics that are then applied to key industrial and financial engines in the modern UK economy, ensuring its international competitiveness and innovation. In addition to their usual teaching duties the groups give courses at London Taught Course Centre LTTC, attended by a variety of students in the London area. The results of the group's research also feed into the general literature of theoretical physics, and is then taught to students over a wide range of subject areas through courses and books, including those written by members of the group. For example, the book ``Introduction to Supersymmetry and Supergravity" by Peter West is a standard text and he has also recently published pedagogical book ``Introductions to Strings and Branes" with Cambridge University Press. In addition Andreas Recknagel has recently written "Boundary Conformal Field Theory and the Worldsheet Approach to D-Branes" with Cambridge University Press. In addition Nikolay Gromov and collaborators have run Mathematica Summer Schools on Theoretical Physics, which combines academic lectures on the latest results in theoretical physics with problem-solving classes using Mathematica, which was not aimed at researchers in Particle Physics. This also provides a valuable form of collaboration with industry through the direct involvement of Wolfram Research. These schools attract more then 80 participants, the majority of them from developing countries. Also, the Theoretical Physics group participates in the EU training network GATIS. In particular Drukker and Gromov organised the GATIS-funded IGST conference in July 2015, one of the major events in theoretical physics, with 200 participants and which included a public lecture. This was held at the International Center for Theoretical Physics, Trieste. Sameer Murthy was one of the directors of the school.
