UK Programme for the European Extremely Large Telescope: HIRES

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This sub-project is aimed at supporting the activities of UK institutes associated with the Phase A of the High Resolution Spectrograph for the Extremely Large Telescope, HIRES. The activities will mostly consists in the design of one of the two near-IR spectrographs currently planned within HIRES. The project will support also the development of the grating mosaicing concept (which can be used for all HIRES modules), to investigate the benefits and potential of AO, and to explore the wavelength calibration options (by exploiting Laser Comb-like concepts).

Description We have refined the design of the testing equipment for the large grating mosacining required by the HIRES instrument. Most parts have been procured and/or machined and a cry-chamber has been modified to allow for testing. We have also further developed the science cases and more clearly defined the Top Level Requirements and Technical Specification of the instrument, together with the European Southern Observatory. Additional documentation required to start Phase B have been produced together with the consortium. Phase B has been approved by the ESO council. The official phase B Kick Off will be in May 2022, although internal Kick Offs of individual WP, including the Kick Off of the Science Team, will happen in April.

Update in March 2023:
The new name of the HIRES instrument is now ANDES.
All parts of the grating mosaic prototype of the have been procured and are being assembled.
The science cases for the instrument have been further refined with advanced simulations, especially in the area of exoplanets and with cosmological simulations. The technical requirements for the several science cases have been further refined.
The instrument had internal kick-off of the consortium in April 2022.
ESO has approved the start of Phase B1 in September 2022.
The System Architecture Review is planned for October 2023
Exploitation Route The HIRES phase A (enabled by the grant) has fostered the technical and scientific activities, and has enabled progress that will allow Phase B to start.
The grating mosaic concept can potentially be used in other instruments and other facilities (also outside astronomy).
