UK programme for the European Extremely Large Telescope: additional support for HIRES phase A

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

This sub-project is aimed at providing further support to the Phase A activities for the High Resolution Spectrograph, HIRES.
These activities will last longer and will be more extensive than previously anticipated. Even more importantly, phase A will
see a prominent involvement of UK, more specifically: UK will be leading the whole infrared subsystems, we will be contributing to the front end (fibres
and adaptive optics), will contribute to the calibration systems (laser comb) and will be leading the revision of the
science cases, the definition of the associated Top Level Requirements, and their prioritisation (the HIRES Project Scientist and Chair of
Science Advisory Team is the PI of this proposal).

Within this context, additional funds for the HIRES Phase-A, within the UK E-ELT budget, have already been approved by the UK E-ELT
Steering Committee, for UK-ATC, Durham University, Heriot-Watt University and University of Cambridge.

This sub-project will specifically provide support to the University of Cambridge, both the Department of Physics and the Institute of Astronomy,
for their contribution to the scientific activities, for the investigating and prototyping of the grating mosaicing, for developing the cameras opto-mechanic
design and for contributing to the infrared detectors characterisation plan.

Description We have further developed the design, and started the procurement, of a prototype for the gratings mosaic for the HIRES instrument at the ELT.
We have also updated and refined the science cases for the HIRES instrument.
Exploitation Route The grating mosaic concept can potentially be used in other instruments and other facilities (also outside astronomy).
