From Stars to Baht: Broadening the economic impact of astronomical data handling techniques in Thailand - Phase II
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Sheffield
Department Name: Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
The most effective way of reducing levels of poverty in developing countries is through their continued economic development, which leads to increased levels of income per person. Research has shown that one of the main ways of achieving this is through maintained increases in levels of productivity (defined as output per hour worked) within businesses and organisations. For an upper-middle income economy such as Thailand's, productivity growth will increasingly rely on innovation, which today requires access to high-tech skills. With more and more Thai industries collecting data on their customers, production lines, distribution networks, stock prices, etc., one of the most crucially needed high-tech skill is the ability to handle large amounts of digital data. Our ongoing project aims to provide such skills for businesses and organisations across Thailand, especially those regions outside Bangkok which have traditionally suffered from weaker economic growth. The first step in this project - for which we received Newton funding - was to use large astronomical datasets to expose Thai data scientists based at Mae Fah Luang University (MFU) to "Big Data". This was followed by a GCRF Foundation Award to facilitate working with five pre-selected regional businesses and organisations, during which we worked with undergraduate students to research how to adapt our technologies and skills to meet the data handling and analysis needs of these external partners. Following the success of our Foundation Award project, we now request GCRF funds to support the expansion of the project to include a broader range of larger external partners with a more national presence. This will provide MFU with the exposure needed to become a self-sustaning hub for data science research and training within Northern Thailand.

PI Contribution | For exach partner, staff members and students worked on developing data analytics-based solutions for the various clients' specific needs. For example: 1) Thanapiriya : designing a new branch (location/product profile) based on clustering of existing branches' features 2) Thai AirAsia: determining a real time deterioration of Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) with data analytic technology 3) Deevana Plaza: customer segmentation 4) Openlandscape: disclosing patterns of credit top-up, better pricing strategy using customer behaviour 5) BIOPHICS: predictive model of CKD progression 6) AI & Robotics Ventures (ARV): Monitoring of PPE adoption in worksites using Object detection and tracking technology 7) Chiang Rai hospital, we helped them to develop web applications for emergency medical service management plus the development of a basic data analytical module. 8) Bank of Thailand: Provided training as describes in other areas of this submission. |
Collaborator Contribution | Each partner contributed staff time to work with the staff and students to describe the problem that they wanted the students to work on, and the data that they could give the students. They also constantly interact with our student teams through reflecting on the model/system design, and the evaluation of the final product. |
Impact | While all the problems the teams worked on were related to data analytics, the variety of sectors they worked in was diverse. For example: Medical/health, retail, aircraft maintenance, hotel marketing (tourism), airport safety management, emergency medical service. |

Title | Various web apps for our clients |
Description | Prototype web apps were created for the first five of our partners: Thanapiriya, Thai AirAsia Deevana Plaza, Openlandscape, BIOPHICS Web apps will also be delivered for the remaining four partners, but the student teams are still working on their development. |
Type Of Technology | Webtool/Application |
Year Produced | 2020 |
Impact | These web applications allow the partners to upload and analyse data, such that the resulting output can support decision making such as groups of customers and their characteristics. They also allows staff of partner organisation to learn and make use of data analytical tool, specific to their problems.
