Supernova Model Discrimination with Hyper-Kamiokande
in The Astrophysical Journal
Description | The aim of this award was to produce a first design of the Hyper-Kamiokande data acquisition (DAQ) and trigger systems. The DAQ systems receive data from the detector electronics and make real-time decisions about which portions of data should be written to disk for offline analysis. |
Exploitation Route | The work performed during this grant established UK leadership of the DAQ group within the Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration. The initial design of the DAQ and trigger systems will be developed further during the the subsequent grant awards. |

Description | Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration |
Organisation | Hyper-Kamiokande |
Country | Global |
Sector | Learned Society |
PI Contribution | Member of the international Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration since 2013. The collaboration is currently designing the beamline, near detectors and far detector for the experiment. The Lancaster group has leadership within the near and far detectors. |
Collaborator Contribution | Institutions within Japan have responsibility for the experiment sites and general infrastructure. International collaborators choose to focus on an aspect of the experiment's design/construction and also physics sensitivity studies. |
Impact | The collaboration is currently developing the design of the full-scale experiment and planning the construction schedule. |
Start Year | 2012 |
Description | T2K collaboration |
Organisation | T2K Collaboration |
Country | Global |
Sector | Academic/University |
PI Contribution | Member of the international T2K collaboration (collaboration has existed since before 2006). The group holds several leadership roles in the experiment, specifically related to the operation of the near detector and analysis of its data. |
Collaborator Contribution | Collaborators focus on either the beam, near detector or far detector, all of which are essential to the experiment. Within these three areas, individual members of the collaboration focus on one or two areas of analysis (e.g. calibrations, cross sections, selections, oscillation analyses) and draw on the expertise of people within the collaboration to undertake their task. Collaborators also contribute to the maintenance and operation of the experiment. |
Impact | Please see list of publications on T2K experiment website listed above. |
