Hyper-Kamiokande extension 2020/21

Lead Research Organisation: Lancaster University
Department Name: Physics

Abstract

Please see text from lead organisation.

Description The aim of this grant was to further develop the initial design of the data acquisition and trigger systems for the Hyper-Kamiokande experiment. A refined design has been prepared and it was used as the basis for a further funding request to STFC.
Exploitation Route The UK Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration submitted a request to STFC for funding to support the DAQ/trigger work as part of the UK construction request.
Sectors Education,Other

Description Findings have been used in the following activities: 1. Undergraduate teaching, specifically 3rd/4th year optional modules 2. Undergraduate and Postgraduate recruitment 3. Outreach and external engagement activities.

Description Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration
Organisation Hyper-Kamiokande
Country Global
Sector Learned Society
PI Contribution Member of the international Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration since 2013. The collaboration is currently designing the beamline, near detectors and far detector for the experiment. The Lancaster group has leadership within the near and far detectors.
Collaborator Contribution Institutions within Japan have responsibility for the experiment sites and general infrastructure. International collaborators choose to focus on an aspect of the experiment's design/construction and also physics sensitivity studies.
Impact The collaboration is currently developing the design of the full-scale experiment and planning the construction schedule.
Start Year 2012

Description T2K collaboration
Organisation T2K Collaboration
Country Global
Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution Member of the international T2K collaboration (collaboration has existed since before 2006). The group holds several leadership roles in the experiment, specifically related to the operation of the near detector and analysis of its data.
Collaborator Contribution Collaborators focus on either the beam, near detector or far detector, all of which are essential to the experiment. Within these three areas, individual members of the collaboration focus on one or two areas of analysis (e.g. calibrations, cross sections, selections, oscillation analyses) and draw on the expertise of people within the collaboration to undertake their task. Collaborators also contribute to the maintenance and operation of the experiment.
Impact Please see list of publications on T2K experiment website listed above.
