Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

| Description | Over the last year in this project we have studied a few new grades of graphite in terms of their 3D porosity distribution and residual stresses. We've found that they are very different from existing medium grained graphite and we should treat them differently for the target application. |
| Exploitation Route | The results are reported at various workshops and conferences. We are building on the understanding gained to development better target graphite materials. The methods established can be used in other ceramics or porous materials in general. |
| Sectors | Aerospace Defence and Marine Energy |
| Description | Some of the general findings have been used as materials for an open day outreach event at Oxford to inspire younger generation to select science and engineering as their future subject. |

| Title | Raman spectroscopy as a tool for total irradiation damage assessment in target graphite |
| Description | A method was developed to evaluate the total amount of damage introduced in target graphite as a result of proton beam bombardment. This utilzed the correlation between decrease in crystallite size and increase in the bandwidth of a single peak of the graphite Raman spectrum. This paper has been published on Carbon.: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0008622323004268 New experiments are proposed and planned to verify the method on target graphite materials. |

| Primary Audience | Undergraduate students |
| Results and Impact | The event was organised by a PhD student in Chemistry who is the CEO of Creative Tuition Collective (https://www.creativetuitioncollective.com/) (www.linkedin.com/in/lara-lalemi). In short, they provide young people from lower income backgrounds with free STEM tuition and mental well-being support to improve their academic abilities and self-confidence. Part of their mission in creating Creative Tuition is to showcase how science and maths is a joy to be a part of and a worthwhile career path for anyone, no matter what barriers they do or do not face. They wanted to make a video of local prominent women across the university to showcase in a school assembly in celebration of International Women in STEM Day. I took part in this. The video did not focus on the fact that I am a woman, but the focus was to show students brilliant scientists and mathematicians who happen to be women. |
