Photometric redshift estimation and DESC-related software development

Abstract

The Rubin Observatory will be the most powerful optical survey telescope ever, reaching the depth of most current surveys in a single visit, and repeating these visits more than 200 times over the course of ten years, which allows it to cover a large fraction of the sky. The UK will be a major international partner in this project and in this role will support key elements of the analysis pipelines exploiting this exquisite dataset. Our contribution will focus on localising galaxies and other distant objects along the line of sight based on their colours, which is notoriously difficult but vital for a wide range of science areas, including the understanding of our cosmological model and of galaxies and their evolution over cosmic time.
