Experimental Particle Physics: Equipment Request

Abstract

The group's bid for equipment in this call is in support of the far-reaching detector development programme. The Glasgow PPE group has been at the forefront of technology development for particle physics trackers and applications of pixel detectors for serval decades. We have been a driving force in the paradigm shift to large all-silicon tracking systems realised in LHC experiments. This was made possible via low mass silicon detector modules dependent upon ASIC, sensor, and data transmission developments performed by Glasgow. Today we are developing the basic technology to enable the next paradigm shift to 4D tracking where the timing resolution of the detector module is key. Just as radiation hard sensors and small pixel ASICs have enabled high luminosity trackers at the present LHC, 4D tracking will allow even higher luminosity experiments at the LHC and future high energy and high luminosity colliders. Two technologies are being pursued by Glasgow for 4D tracking, namely CMOS detectors and LGAD sensors coupled to TimePix4. The equipment requested here underpins the development of these basic technologies for particle physics and wider applications.
