Abstract
The Particle Cosmology and Gravity groups at Nottingham aim to understand the fundamental particles and forces in our universe. We do this by working on the fundamental theoretical underpinning of our understanding of physics, and also by modelling the behaviour of the physics we know, and the physics proposed to solve fundamental cosmological mysteries, so that this can be compared with experimental data and cosmological observations.
We live in a Universe in which distant galaxies are accelerating apart from one another, but the cause for this cannot be the ordinary matter present in it as the universe should be slowing down due to the attractive pull of gravity on the matter it contains. We call whatever is causing this acceleration dark energy (DE) and the leading candidate is the Cosmological Constant (CC). There can't be much of it around today because if there was, it would have caused galaxies to blow apart by now, yet most quantum theories predict far too much of it. We are trying to resolve this imbalance and have proposed a solution to the problem in which the CC is cancelled, effectively removing it. We intend to develop our understanding of the model and ask both whether it can be found to exist in particle theory models of our Universe and whether we can see direct evidence of it in compact objects. We will also be working on other DE models. In one of them known as Quintessence we will establish whether it exists in fundamental theory, and in another class where the force driving the acceleration is screened from view in regions of high density such as here on Earth, we have established a number of features they have that would allow us to test for them in the laboratory and on galactic scales. An alternative point of view to DE driving the acceleration of our universe, is to modify Einstein's General Theory of Relativity (GR) on large scales, and we work on such models. We will be testing them, both on cosmological scales and by seeing how they affect the formation of massive objects like neutron stars. We will also constrain models of Dark Matter, the key component of the universe which keeps galaxies together. We have yet to find out what DM really is, and one of our aims is to help uncover the mysterious particle that is binding our galaxy together. We will be working on the possibility that there may be primordial black holes (PBH) formed in the early universe, maybe an extremely light particle called the axion, or possibly another type of particle known as a domain wall formed in the early universe. Many people think the early Universe underwent a phase of almost exponential expansion for a brief period of time, known as Inflation. We will work on models of inflation to establish whether or not successful models can be found in string theory. A new area which has emerged here at Nottingham recently is the possibility of testing theories of gravity in the laboratory by creating analogue experiments. Although at a completely different energy scale to the early universe, they enjoy similar equations, hence the hope that by doing such experiments we can mimic early universe effects and even use the experiments to make predictions about those earliest moments. Gravity is at its strongest around Black holes and neutron stars. We will make use of this feature both to test for modified gravity theories and to look for new signatures of gravity - such as scalar field hair growing from the BHs! We will use numerical simulations involving quantum theory to demonstrate how black holes actually evaporate by emitting Hawking radiation once they have formed.
We are developing models of cosmology that allow us to talk about the earliest moments in the universe, where the role of Gravity and Quantum Mechanics are vital, and intend to develop methods to constrain and test these models with astronomical data such as the fluctuations seen in the thermal radiation associated with the Big Bang.

| Title | FeynMG: A FeynRules extension for scalar-tensor theories of gravity |
| Description | The ability to represent perturbative expansions of interacting quantum field theories in terms of simple diagrammatic rules has revolutionized calculations in particle physics (and elsewhere). Moreover, these rules are readily automated, a process that has catalyzed the rise of symbolic algebra packages. However, in the case of extended theories of gravity, such as scalar-tensor theories, it is necessary to precondition the Lagrangian to apply this automation or, at the very least, to take advantage of existing software pipelines. We present a Mathematica code FeynMG, which works in conjunction with the well-known package FeynRules, to do just that: FeynMG takes as inputs the FeynRules model file for a non-gravitational theory and a user-supplied gravitational Lagrangian. FeynMG provides functionality that inserts the minimal gravitational couplings of the degrees of freedom specified in the model file, determines the couplings of the additional tensor and scalar degrees of freedom (the metric and the scalar field from the gravitational sector), and preconditions the resulting Lagrangian so that it can be passed to FeynRules, either directly or by outputting an updated FeynRules model file. The Feynman rules can then be determined and output through FeynRules, using existing universal output formats and interfaces to other analysis packages. |

| Title | Final data for paper "A nonperturbative test of nucleation calculations for strong phase transitions" |
| Description | In this Zenodo deposit we include the data used to make three key figures in our paper, showing our final nucleation rate results. The columns of the raw data files are labelled. In each case, the quantity being tabulated is the logarithm of the nucleation rate, typically labelled logGamma in our data files. We also include plotting scripts to generate the figures from the data. The directory a_limit contains the extrapolation to zero lattice spacing, with the raw data in the file a_limit_data. The temperature T is fixed to our benchmark point of 93.121 GeV. The linear size Nx and the lattice spacing a are varied to give a constant total volume. The file a_limit_lin_op_data contains our comparison measurement using the linear order parameter. The script plot_a_limit.py performs a nonlinear least squares fit to a cubic, writes the continuum extrapolated nuclation rate result to stdout, and plots the data and the fit. The directory vol_limit contains the extrapolation to infinite volume, with the raw data in the file vol_limit_data. Here the temperature T=93.121 GeV and lattice spacing a=1.5 are fixed, while the linear size Nx is varied. The script plot_vol_limit.py performs a nonlinear least squares fit to an exponential function, writes the infinite volume limit nucleation rate result to stdout, and again plots the data and the fit. The directory rate_reweighted contains the data needed to plot the nucleation rate as a function of temperature. This plot combines lattice data and various perturbative estimates of the nucleation rate. The lattice data are in three files: rate_lattice_BM2_vol_limit contains the infinite volume limit result at the simulated lattice temperature T=93.121 GeV and with lattice spacing a=1.5. rate_lattice_BM2 reweights the lattice data to different temperatures and then takes the infinite volume limit. rate_lattice_BM2_Nx40_a1.5 contains data reweighted from the simulation at fixed volume Nx=40. In each lattice data file, the temperature, continuum potential parameters and nucleation rate are given. The perturbative results are in three files, rate_perturbative_BM2_rg_low, rate_perturbative_BM2 and rate_perturbative_BM2_rg_high, corresponding to the three RG scales mentioned in the text. These files again contain the temperature and continuum lattice parameters. The column eps gives the dimensionless loop expansion parameter around the metastable phase within the EFT. The column logGamma_0 gives the tree level result, logGamma_A and logGamma_B the LPA results with the two options for dealing with the imaginary parts described in the text, and logGamma_1 is the one loop result. The script plot_rate_reweighted.py plots all of these data together. For the tree level and one loop cases, the error bands plotted correspond to the minimum and maximum values of the nucleation rate across the three RG scales. For the LPA results, the bands include the extreme values for all six options including the two approaches to handling the imaginary parts. In each case, the plots are saved to PDF and PNG plot files. The figures used in this deposit and in the paper used the following package versions (obtained with the pipreqs package): matplotlib==3.5.1 numpy==1.21.5 scipy==1.8.0 seaborn==0.11.2 Note that in Version v1 there was an error in the normalisation of our perturbative tree-level and LPA results which has now been fixed. |

| Title | Perturbative effective field theory expansions for cosmological phase transitions, dataset |
| Description | This dataset is the work of Oliver Gould and Tuomas V.I. Tenkanen. It collects the numerical data from the paper "Perturbative effective field theory expansions for cosmological phase transitions" (2023). It primarily contains data from perturbative calculations of the thermal evolution of the real-triplet extended Standard Model at two benchmark parameter points. In addition, for comparison to the perturbative results, we have included data of the scalar quadratic condensates as a function of temperature from the lattice Monte-Carlo simulations of Lauri Niemi, Michael J. Ramsey-Musolf, Tuomas V.I. Tenkanen and David J. Weir, from the paper "Thermodynamics of a Two-Step Electroweak Phase Transition" (2020). We thank the authors for granting permission to reproduce this data here. Everything is contained within the archive file triplet_two_step_data.tar.gz, a tarball compressed with Gzip. For further details and for the context of this dataset, see the above papers. Details of the conventions used in the dataset can be found in the accompanying README.md file. |

| Title | Two-bubble envelope approximation code and results |
| Description | This deposit contains the code required to carry out the envelope approximation simulations used in the paper with preprint title Vacuum bubble collisions: from microphysics to gravitational waves by Oliver Gould, Satumaaria Sukuvaara, and David Weir. The method and results are based on the following papers: Gravitational Wave Production by Collisions: More Bubbles by Stephan J. Huber and Thomas Konstandin [arXiv:0806.1828]. Gravitational radiation from colliding vacuum bubbles: envelope approximation to many bubble collisions by Arthur Kosowsky and Michael S. Turner [arXiv:astro-ph/9211004]. Gravitational radiation from colliding vacuum bubbles by Arthur Kosowsky, Michael S. Turner and Richard Watkins [Inspire]. In the latter paper the envelope approximation is introduced in Appendix C. There are two files: dweir-envelope-b2842c4827ad.zip is a snapshot of the Bitbucket-hosted Git repository for the simulation code, corresponding to the commit tagged v1.1.0. Later versions of the code may exist. The snapshot was generated by the Bitbucket service and does not include the Git metadata. two-bubbles-envelope-data.tar.gz is an archive of the simulation results used to generate the envelope approximation results seen in the preprint, as well as numerical tests and some additional numerical explorations. While the results were generated with a slightly earlier version of the code than the tagged release in this deposit, they have been confirmed to be reproducible with the code provided. Both archives contain README.md files with further information. |
