Title Jol Thomson University of Westminster
Description A Canadian artist based now in the UK and doing a Phd at the University Westminster. He is working on an experimental documentation of an interdisciplinary physics experiment, a sort of 'sedimentary cosmology' that looks towards how and when heavy elements were deposited on Earth. He is deeply interested in core samples generally, since he is invested in thinking anthropogenic climate change and deep time Earth histories in his research and artistic practice.
Type Of Art Film/Video/Animation
Year Produced 2018
Impact An ongoing piece of work

Description BOSCORF has developed state-of-the-art facilities to preserve sediment cores collected using NERC funds under optimum conditions, so they can be resampled to add to the knowledge base, as concepts evolve and new instrumentation is developed. BOSCORF has developed and maintains a state-of-the-art core logging instrument suite to non-destructively log sediment cores to extract high-resolution, quality-assured environmental and scientific information. BOSCORF thus provides UK scientists with high-quality data that contributes to the high profile held by UK scientists in the environmental and geological sciences, and their publication record.
Exploitation Route BOSCORF provides a unique and strategic service to the scientific community. It maintains an advanced sediment core logging instrumentation suite of interest to a broad user base, that includes marine geoscientists, biogeochemists, geographers and archaeologists. BOSCORF promotes multiple usage of the core material in its care ensuring cost-effective exploitation of an important national scientific resource. It is also responsible for long-term curation of sediment core-based data relating to its holdings and from core-based national marine programmes in compliance with NERC data management policy.

Description The BOSCORF ITRAX micro-XRF core scanner has been used to characterise cores collected as part of the "Blue Mining" consortium, will develop solutions that will bring sustainable deep sea mining a big step closer. In a duration of 48 months the "Blue Mining" project. The project addresses all aspects of the value chain in this field, from resource discovery to resource assessment and from exploitation technologies to the legal and regulatory framework. The project "Breakthrough Solutions for Mineral Extraction and Processing in Extreme Environment - Blue Mining" received funding from the European Commission. The extreme conditions found on the deep-ocean floor raise specific challenges, both technically and environmentally, which are demanding and entirely different from land-based mining. Today, European offshore industries and marine research institutions have some global advantage through their significant experience and technology and are well positioned to develop engineering and knowledge-based solutions to resource exploitation in these challenging and sensitive environments.

Impact BOSCORFs role in postgraduate training (particularly for Ph.D. researchers) in core logging and analysis has no parallel elsewhere in the UK. Instruction is through formal courses and workshops and through one-to-one bespoke training on demand. It is proactive in the NERC Doctoral Training Scheme and the last five years have seen a significant increase in Ph.D. students using the facility and receiving specialised training.

Title Upgrading of the BOSCORF core logging instruments to state-of-the-art
Description BOSCORF has significantly upgraded and expanded its core logging instrument portfolio since last contract renewal. Over £200k has been invested in upgrading the ITRAX XRF core scanner and GEOTEK multi-sensor core logger (MSCL-XYZ) to state-of-the-art and acquiring a GEOTEK MSCL-CIS (core imaging system) to record very high quality archival imagery. These upgrades ensured increased efficiency and that BOSCORF instrumentation remained state of the art. Funds were also acquired to install high-density shelving in one of the cold rooms to optimise storage capacity.
Type Of Material Improvements to research infrastructure
Year Produced 2013
Provided To Others? Yes
Impact The upgrades have increased instrument reliability, increased measurement capacity and allowed collection of high-quality robust datasets, providing the UK scientists with world-class analytical facilities. This is reflected in increasing research user numbers of BOSCORF facilities, increasing publication of BOSCORF-engendered data in high-impact journals, and an increasing number of Ph.D. students using BOSCORF facilities.

Sector Academic/University
PI Contribution BOSCORF sends metadata on its holdings to the National Centers for Environmental Information (run by NOAA) in Boulder, Colorado, USA, for mounting on the Index to Marine & Lacustrine Geological Samples (IMLGS) (doi:10.7289/V5H41PB8), a searchable online database to which all the major core repositories in the USA, Canada, Australia and Germany submit metadata. During the year, metadata on BOSCORF-held cores were submitted to the IMLGS database and currently ~97% of BOSCORF's core holdings are entered on the IMLGS. Future plans include submitting core photographs (so far159 core photographs have been submitted and made available online) and core logs to the IMLGS, to allow users to better gauge research potential.
Collaborator Contribution NCEI holds BOSCORF sediment core metadata. This information is then made available through the NCEI website.
Impact The metadata for BOSCORF sediment core holdings is made publicly available as a result of this collaboration.

Title Developments of Corewall facilities to visualise high-resolution core data
Description BOSCORF staff have upskilled to gain proficiency in operating comprehensive software solutions for integrating and visualising diverse and disparate core data (such as Corewall) to provide users with world-leading data analysis tools.
Type Of Technology Software
Year Produced 2012
Impact BOSCORF staff took a lead role working with US software developers to adapt Corewall to handle and display very high-resolution data such as that generated by the ITRAX XRF core scanner. This allows ITRAX XRF data to be integrated with physical property and colour data acquired by other instruments, providing scientists for the first time with a means to assemble and visualise complete core datasets, including high-resolution geochemistry.

Results and Impact For one day of the year NOC opens the doors of the Southampton office to the public, giving a unique view of the ground breaking science and engineering undertaken across the NOC.
The day is a mix of hands on science, exhibits and talks, with content aimed at all age groups. This is a unique opportunity to get close to our fleet of robotic vehicles and to talk to our scientists and engineers about the work that they do. BOSCORF provided public tours to the core repository giving people a unique insight in the collection and science related to marine sediments. BOSCORF also had a stand in the main exhibition hall, allowing visitors to view sediment samples and ask questions. Approximately 3000 members of the public visited.
