Description | The National Centre for Earth Observation ("NCEO") is an established NERC (Natural Environment Research Council) centre focused on the exploitation of Earth observation ("EO") from space to monitor and understand environmental and climate change. It comprises leading universities and institutions specialising in EO from space. The NCEO Directorate, which is based in the University of Reading, provides strategic planning for NCEO as well as day to day management. The Directorate ensures that the NCEO has a high profile with key partner and customer organisations. Key achievements: 1 Gave strong strategic input and support to the UK Space Agency in developing the business case for EO and subscriptions to European Space Agency programmes 2 Alan O'Neill is the Chair of the Earth Sciences Advisory Committee of the European Space Agency. He is also science adviser to the Parliamentary Space Committee, and Member of UK Space Agency's EO Advisory Committee. 3 Leading role in developing the concept and establishing the facility for Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space in partnership with industry on the Harwell Campus 4 Provides the scientific lead and project coordination for the FP7 CHARMe project to augment climate data with ancillary information. 5 Led a proposal to the European Space Agency to deliver advanced techniques in data assimilation. The purpose of which is to synthesise data from earth orbiting satellites and numerical models to enable predictions to be made of climate and environmental change. 6 NCEO in collaboration with the Centre for Earth Observation Instrumentation organised a national conference on Earth observation science and technology in Nottingham in 2012 bringing together nearly 200 academic users of EO, instrument developers and the business community as well as representatives of the UK and European Space Agencies. 7. Professor Shaun Quegan - Director of the NCEO's Carbon Theme - is the Principal Investigator on the Biomass mission, which in May 2013 was selected by the European Space Agency to be a major satellite launch in 2020. Scientists will use Biomass to calculate the amount of carbon stored in the world's forests, and help researchers understand better the role trees play in the cycling of carbon on Earth and, by extension, the influence this has on the planet's climate. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-22435656 8. In September 2013, the NCEO was a major exhibitor at the European Space Agency's Living Planet Symposium in Edinburgh, and may of NCEO's scientists gave key talks at the symposium. http://www.livingplanet2013.org/ 9. NCEO also exhibited at the UK Space Conference in Glasgow in July 2013. http://www.intellectuk.org/uk-space-2013-sponshorship-a-exhibition. 10. In July 2013, the Natural Environment Research Council agreed the continuation of the National Centre for Earth Observation around a new strategy, based on four grand challanges: (i) Observation, detection and interpretation of Earth System Change; (ii) Evaluation of Earth System models; (iii) Exploring the predictability of the Earth System; and (iv) Developing new methods for observing the Earth System. Professor John Remedios (Incoming Director October 2014) is preparing the new science proposal for NCEO ii, closely supported by Professor Peter Jan van Leeuwen (Interim Director), who is specifically responsible for defining the data assimilation strategy. 11. On March 10-11 2014, NCEO held a conference for Early Career Scientists in Leeds. Attendees gave short talks and a poster on their work and keynote speakers included Professor Andrew Shepherd on "From Concept to Launch" on how to develop an ESA mission; Professor John Remedios on "NCEO's future science plan". Delegates also received media training on delivering a podcast, by Richard Hollingham of Boffin Media. Copies of the talks and posters will be published on the NCEO website (see below). 12. NCEO will hold a Science conference in June 2014, jointly with the Centre for Earth Instrumentation and Space Technology. 13. NCEO leads the UK Space Agency's work on climate change. Debbie Clifford acts as the Coordinator of the Climate Data from Space Stakeholder Group which aims to promote UK leadership in processing, analysis, quality assurance and control, modelling and visualisation of space data for environmental research and climate applications and supports the growth of downstream services by bridging the gaps between academia and the commercial and public sectors. |
Exploitation Route | The Facility for Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space is a facility to enable the best businesses, researchers and end-users to work together to develop new satellite-based products, services and applications. http://sa.catapult.org.uk/ The Climate Data from Space Stakeholder Group supports the growth of downstream services by bridging the gaps between academia and the commercial and public sectors. Evidence of exploitation: 1 Over £3M contracts won with European Space Agency, European Union and commerce. 2. CEMS (The Facility for Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space) is a key development for enhancing exploitation. 3. Climate Data from Space Stakeholder Group - is coordinated by Dr Debbie Clifford, NCEO, University of Reading. |

Description | CEMS is a facility to process, manage and distribute large datasets, produced from satellites monitoring the Earth's environment. The Facility for Climate and Environmental Monitoring from Space (CEMS) is a data centre based at Harwell's Science and Innovation Campus, for managing and processing large and complex datasets. With both Government and industrial sponsorship, CEMS has facilitated public-private sector partnerships to develop and expand the UK space industry. Government investment has enabled CEMS to play a key role in delivering UK Space Agency application development programmes. Discussion is taking place with the European Space Agency for CEMS to become a major data access and processing node for ESA data from the climate initiative programmes. CEMS has partnered industry (such as Infoterra) and provides facilities for small and medium-sized businesses in the space sector (such as Magellium), providing a major impact on the development of the expertise within the UK space sector, and downstream commercial products. |
